Late Game Notes 5/9/10 – No Ducks, Add Squirrel

No Squirrels were harmed at Coca Cola Park yesterday.

I have to be honest.. the past two days have really kicked me. I am exausted. I made the trip to mom after yesterday’s game, had some fried chicken and came home to bed. That wind really does you in.. So to recap a little on the game and add some other side notes….

The Pigs lost the game 3 to 4 in 10 innings. I know the broadcasters announced that Rich Thompson was out on the force out in the bottom of the ninth, where had he been safe, the winning run had scored… but a similiar play in the 10th for the Clippers ended with a safe call allowing the Clippers to take 3 of 4 here in the Valley this weekend.

Former Ironpig Carlos Carrasco pitched 6 innings allowing 2 runs on 6 hits.

Jason Donald also had 3 hits including a triple.

Rich Thompson pushed his average to .338 after going 3-5 with a triple.

Andy Tracy had a hit and was robbed of a sure hit and 2 RBI when Clipper’s right fielder made a great catch of his fast sinking line drive.

Dane Sardinha hit a wind assisted home run into the Bud Light Trough.

Cody Ransom committed his 9th error of the season. No gold glove for this guy… however he had some terrible calls on him at the plate and he held his tongue. It makes you wonder if umpires talk and hold grudges..

Now quite possibly the most exciting thing to happen at CCP yesterday, possibly blown on to the field by that strong wind… a squirrel spent the better part of 4 innings in the outfield during the game. He seemed to enjoy Rich Thompson the most and was encouraged on by the Pig’s bullpen who were seen tossing him sunflower seeds. There were Richmond Flying Squirrels jokes tossed about and questions if security would taser it, but the squirrel was allowed to be the Pig’s 10th outfielder and no harm came to be.

Also, Brian Schneider was added to the Disabled list pulling Paul Hoover to Philadelphia and Kevin Nelson to the Pigs lineup yesterday. The Hog Blog reported that Nelson would be soon replaced by John Suomi.

8 days until the Pigs return home..

  1. The RF for CLC was Chris Gimenez, nice job.

I was thinking the gang had to leave early…gotta cook dinner for moms… I have to do the same thing for mine, except that someone’s screwup left no chicken in the freezer for us… happily my brother arrived just as I discovered this, and picked some up.

Looking forward to the Bison series…

    • No more silliness with the coffee sign?

If it were up to me I’d ask the team (or Wawa) to get a lock for its power switch, so that only those with keys can operate it.

Thompson is playing like a man who says, “I hate the f%#&ing bench.”

    I love it.

Thompson’s playing like a man who says, “I’m number four on the four-man outfield depth chart and it’s just a matter of time until Domonic Brown gets here”. πŸ˜‰

    Oh, yes.

An update on the coffee cup chicanery, please.

14 K’s were up the other day I think.

How many do you have / is it possible for the IronPigs pitchers to strikeout more batters than there are Ks?

    Yes, I agree.

Domonic Brown will be coming to town.

Someday. All but assuredly sooner rather than later. Provided he is not traded away by the Philadelphia Phillies for a starting pitcher first.

Brown at AA Reading last time I looked (a few minutes ago) :

    25 ga, 87-29 ab/h, 9 bb, 9 2B, 1 3B, 5 HR, 19 RBI, .333 avg, 3-5 sb

Brown does have 20 k in 87 ab so far.

A chinc in the armor that older, more experienced AAA pitchers would exploit at this point, I believe.

Game experience, at-bats in AA are a must.

By today’s standards 20 strikeouts in 87 at bats (1 every 4.35 ab) isn’t bad. Ryan Howard has 912 k’s in 2,820 career at bats (1 every 3.09) and major league pitchers still can’t seem to exploit that chinc. I just want to find out soon how well Brown can handle it.
On another note, Michael Taylor is currently hitting .240 with 2 homeruns for AAA Sacramento in the Oakland organization.
