Brian Schneider was recalled to the Phillies roster and Paul Hoover designated for assignment. Not sure how many options Hoover has remaining but we should expect him back in a Pig uniform soon. Expect Suomi to be sent down in turn.

Interesting to see where the Suomi, organizational back-up catcher deluxe, is assigned then.
AA Reading Phillies catchers as of 5/24/10
Gosewisch — 30 ga, 2 HR 7 RBI, .175 avg
Nelson — 14 ga, 0 HR 4 RBI, .208 avg
Langley — 0 ga, 0 HR 0 RBI, .000 avg
Nelson is currently on DL; Langley was promoted from A Lakewood.
I specifically remember being lectured at Jeff Schuler’s HOG BLOG last fall how deep the Phillies were at catcher in the minors.
🙂

Catcher Travis d’Arnaud was traded to Toronto in the Halladay deal. He’s currently playing for Dunedin in the Florida State league and is hitting .314 with 4 homers and 17 rbi’s.
Lou Marson was also dealt in the Cliff Lee deal last July.
Sebastian Valle is now the top catching prospect in the Phillies organization. He’s only 19 and is hitting .236 for Lakewood in class A. He hit .307 at Williamsport last year. Baseball America listed him as the #7 prospect in the Phillies organization “before” the Phillies traded Drabek, Taylor & d’Arnaud who were ranked #2, 3 & 4.
Joel Naughton is a lefthanded hitting catcher playing for high class A Clearwater and is currently hitting .281 in just 32 at bats. He was hitting .320 on April 20th and then missed a month. He’s 1-7 in 2 games since returning on May 23rd. He hit .240 with 7 hr at Clearwater in 2009.
Tim Kennelly is also at Clearwater and is hitting just .189 after hitting a combined .289 between Clearwater and Reading in 2009.
Kennelly & Naughton are both 23.
Brian Schneider was 0 for this weekend (8 at-bats) at Coca-Cola Park this weekend.
Rather unfortunate the Northampton HS product, the first locally-trained player ever to play at Coca-Cola Park for AAA Lehigh Valley, did not manage so much as a single base hit.
Glad to have “Every Day Hoov” back.
I believe when a player is ‘designated for assignment’ he has no remaining options. To designate a player for assignment means the player is removed from the 40 man roster. The team then has 10 days to do one of the following: (1) put the player on waivers; (2) trade the player; or (3) release him. In most instances the player is put on waivers.
If the Phillies put Hoover on waivers (likely), then they must wait 48 hours to see if another team claims him. If he is not claimed off waivers the Phillies can then assign him back to AAA. Hoover would likely have to accept the AAA assignment. If all goes as expected, Hoover would likely rejoin the Ironpigs on Thursday or Friday.
Valdez I believe had to pass waivers before he was sent back (for eight hours or so) the other day.
