The Pigs finally pulled together a win last night. Mayberry and Sardinha both homered and Savery got his first win of the season. Cody Ransom had his 4th straight game with an error to extend his team lead. Ok, I know the runner appeared to have been tagged out at first on the replay but it wouldn’t have been that close had Ransom not bobbled the ball then rushed the throw causing the first baseman to pull off the bag.
I’m going to lay off Ransom for a while. It was related to me after the game that two fans near the dugout were getting on him pretty bad last night. Even to the point where, when his daughter (and other player’s children) were selected to participate in the hoagie toss contest in between the 8th and 9th inning. The little girl gave a good throw only to hear “You should teach your dad how to throw!” Ok, it got a few laughs but we need to remember that these guys do have families and loved ones in the stands. You never know who you’ll meet, spill beer on or embarrass yourself in front of. Therefore, the next 5 errors will not be mentioned by me. (Anyone want to keep track for me?)
Word on the street has it that we might be seeing Andy Tracy back as soon as Thursday. The extra day off on Wednesday will be good for the entire team. As for me, I will be participating in the Hackers and Homers golf tournament supporting Ironpig’s Charities. I golfed in this event last year and really had a great time. You have the standard golf tournament stuff…contests, longest drive, etc. but the beverages are plentiful and all included, not to mention a great buffet of food afterwards. Last year I overdid both… but that’s a another story for another day.
Anyway, don’t be surprised if you don’t hear from me on Thursday.. I will most likely be recovering from the expected 90 degree day of golf and fun.
One last thing. Wanted to send out a belated thanks to the EMT who loaned me a few safety pins after I split my pants before the game on Sunday. Much appreciated!

DK… how did you get yourself involved with the golf event and the IronPig Charities ?
How did you split your pants ? lol
OK, maybe it’s time to start laying off those All Star sandwiches, huh? I will if you will. Then again, ‘easy-off’ pants might come in handy if the game gets to 20 innings….
Do many players play in the golf tourny, or are they just so happy to have a day off that they don’t want to bother?
Well I’ve only had two of the All Star sandwich. The pastrami seems to be slowly getting less and less.. I moved onto the Pretzel burger. It’s well worth the wait for it to be prepared. Really need to eat less there. I went to the driving range and felt the effects of a month of ballpark food on my fitness… but anyway the split came on when I was attempting to recover a stray peanut. Nothing too exciting.
As far as the tournament goes, they had been promoting it for a few weeks and I simply signed up. Noise Nation has one foursome representing us. Next year we might get more, if there is interest. Last year Greg Gross played but no players. I would imagine if you got 1 or 2 days off a month you would want to spend it with your family. I might be wrong but I don’t see too many players on the course. It really is a fun time though. Free beer at every other hole and food makes it easy to mask my poor golf skills!
Yeah, I figured the players wouldn’t be playing, but I was curious. I’m the only doctor in the world who doesn’t golf. Someday I’ll find the time and money to learn.
My plans for this evening fell through, so now I’m free. I already gave away my seats, but my fine, fine, ticket rep was able to find me some new ones. Nice weather, free umbrellas, and a chance to buy burritos on the club level! I’m there! Meaning to try the pretzel burger, too– Next home-stand.
Just got word: Tracy activated! At the very least, he’ll be available to pinch hit.

Golf to win, Kehl.
But don’t pass on the free beer.
🙂
Savery finally got some run support.
Good for him. 0-5 would have been tough. The ERA is not THAT bad at all.
Too bad IronPigs can’t get more games to Mathieson.
Tracy not in the lineup, but I’ll be looking for him off the bench when it’s time to pull the pitcher.
Too bad Mathieson has to take turns with some of those other guys. Love Mathieson. Good to see him go 2 innings last night–means we won’t see him tonight, though.
I know the Ironpigs were shorthanded for players but I can’t understand why they let Joe Savery bat with 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th with Bocock on base and then replaced Savery with Alex Concepcion to start the top of the 7th.
Savery again failed to hold 2 runners on second base allowing them both to literally trot to third. (Tejada in the top of the 2nd and Jacobs in the top of the 4th) That’s 4 steals of 3rd without a throw in Savery’s last 2 starts.
The rationale as explained via radio was that the IronPigs had one bench player available and wanted to save that player in case the game was tied back up again.
Plausible.
Savery is also considered to be a fairly-good hitting pitcher.
Savery was a good hitter at Rice University.
I was in line for food when Tejada reached on Ransom’s error in the 6th. Did the throw beat him? I wasn’t near a monitor to see 2’s replay.
The Ferrous (Reuben) is nice, tho I’m wondering if the kraut is put on cold.
If’n you guys had binoculars, you’d have looked straight out and seen me and big brother… 119, last row, at the end towards 120/PPLPP.
Little brother, who bought Sunday’s and the second night game back in April, wondered if I’d be interested in one of the open Picnic Patio dates… I’m not crazy about it, only because I’m not the burgers/dogs type when it comes to food…
They had Suomi and Dorta still on the bench at that point of the game. Dorta entered the game in the 8th. Also, if Dewayne Wise is hurt so much that he can’t even pinch hit, then he belongs on the 7 day DL so they can replace him on the roster. He’s already missed 5 games, last playing on May 19th when he made that awkward slide into home.
I know Savery was used as a dh at Rice but he has never hit well since becoming a professional. Even converted outfielder Brian Gordon who has a .274 lifetime minor league average with 118 career minor league homeruns would have been a better choice than Savery to bat in the bottom of the 6th. And Gordon pitched 2 innings on Sunday so it was unlikely he was going to pitch on Monday. Huppert did the same thing last year with Mazone when he had no reason to ‘save’ a bench player.
Decal,
I can’t say I disagree with any of your points.
As for Savery, no, his hitting either last year or this year does not overwhelm me, either.
What I was relating was the rationale as explained on radio.
The radio does not count the back-up catcher as an available bench player – they never do.
Life in the minors.
