Family Environment – PG13

Yesterday was a wake up call to many die hard Ironpig fans, those who attend most games I should say. The blaring music was replaced by organ music and other sound effects were kept to a minimum. It was nice.

Don’t get me wrong, I like metal music too! It gets the crowd pumped up and cheering. It gets people dancing up on the scoreboard screen and gives you that really good “I’m part of something bigger than myself” feeling.

There are a few “questionable” songs that are played at the park though. People of my generation and older hear some of these new songs with the lyrics hard to understand and think it has a nice beat to it and don’t really pay attention to it. The kids at the park know these songs, they know them well.

When one of the players, Willy Tavares I believe, walks up to the plate a song clip singing about “Supermanning a Ho” plays loudly. Yesterday a 14 year old boy explained to me what supermanning a ho really was. Yikes. I’m not going to say it but ask anyone under the age of 20 and they will probably be able to fill you in. Be ready though, you might not get the answer you expect!

Another song, this one by Christina Aguilera, sings about a “Candy Man.” Not exactly the song Willy Wonka sings at his chocolate factory.. This one goes on with lyrics that say:

“He’s a one stop shop, makes my panties drop”

“He’s a one stop shop, makes my cherry pop”

“He’s a one stop shop, get it while it’s hot, baby don’t stop”

Yes, both of these songs are played regularly during games at Coca Cola Park.

Maybe I’m getting old. A few people have mentioned this to me and thought I would reach out to the readers and get your thoughts if this is appropriate for a “Family Environment”

Readers?

I was critcial of Jay Z singing a sanitized version of Empire State of Mind at the World Series last fall.

I printed the UNEDITED version of the song.

I STILL get emails telling me what a racist I am over my article.

    Point being…

…I have since learned, Mr. Kehl…

    …YES, you are getting old.

(depending upon whom one chooses to listen to and what value systems they have)

  3. The words are “Then superman dat oh”

not “ho” lol. I hate that song but I actually like the rock style remix they play for Taveras.

    • That’s a little better knowing it’s not “ho” but the Supermanning reference, if you understand the lingo/innuendo is still there. Thanks for letting us know the correct line.

They say “oh” in the edited version, which is played at CCP. The regular song does in fact say ho.

I will chalk my experience being me getting old b/c I can’t understand half of the music the players come out to. With that said, I am a little surprised that they let them play that kind of music in a family environment.

It makes me laugh out loud, the hypocrisy the IronPigs are capable of.

    They sell “family entertainment”.

    And hate guys like me.

Meanwhile, everyone knows what rap music focuses on. Everyone. Especially the impressionable 14-year-olds.

But it is the IronPigs’ ballpark so the IronPigs can play all the questionable music they want and supress all opposition, as usual.

(actually, the stadium is the County of Lehigh’s, the IronPigs just have a lease, but that’s another story)

    Great article, Kehl.

You’re not alone Dan. I’m getting old too. Give me the classic stuff anyway!! It scares me to think these kids understand these lyrics better than we do and they don’t mean what you and I think they do. Maybe inappropriate for CCP but I tend to block out the words only because I can’t understand them anyway!

Being one of the younger adult members of Noise Nation, I don’t mind the songs, but are the appropriate for a “family” ballpark, H*** NO!! I’ve said a few times when certain songs are played that I’m surprised they are playing them. Willy’s song is inappropriate for CCP (even though Bacon and Biscuits is right, its “The Superman dat Oh”). and “Candy Man” isn’t the only Christina Aguilera song they play that I feel is inappropriate, I have heard them play “Dirty” too. But as others have said, they can do what they want since they are the lease holders of the ballpark…

  8. It might have started when the radio station made all those bumpers with the hiphop music they play out of commercial breaks.

Who came up with that idea? Schaeffer? :<
