I knew this would be a great night when, during pregame preparations, the centerfield cameraman seemed to stumble or kick a sprinkler head… setting off the sprinkler and dousing himself for a cool 2 minutes before it went off. One of those “I wish I had my camera” moments. His Three Stooges antics that followed just added to the effect.
We also were treated to the Ironpigs Radio Network broadcast team table in Noise Nation where Jon Schaeffer and Matt Provence set up shop and made the call from the outfield with us. A few of us assisted in the broadcast and everyone had a great time. We even had a guest appearance by former Ironpig Radio Producer (and current Reading Phillies Media Director) Tommy Viola who treated us to one of his “Radiooooooo Network” calls. Good to see you Tommy and thanks to Matt and Jon for a fun night!
Also picked up on a new nickname for Domonic Brown. Matt Provence’s call of Brown’s home run came in as “Downtown Domonic Brown!” This instantly reminded me of the 1998 sequel to the movie Major League called “Major League: Back to the Minors” where a key character is known simply as Downtown. The movie is the third sequel and I think much better than the second but not close to the quality of the first.
As for stats tonight…
Andy Tracy had 2 hits and continues to close on .300. He stands at .290 as of the end of tonight’s game.
Domonic Brown continues to be a presence on the field at The Coke. He went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI and his second home run in as many games. Brown also intimidated a third base coach into not challenging his arm when a runner rounding third stopped dead when Brown retrieved a soft liner into right field. Last night he threw out one runner on third and turned a no doubt run scoring into a close play at home plate (the runner avoided the tag)
Newly aquired Aguila also hit his first home run at The Coke. Welcome aboard. Keep that up and the Lehigh Valley will embrace you!
Nate Bump (who was named to the IL All Star roster this afternoon) earned his 7th win of the season. He allowed 2 runs on 7 hits in 6 innings.
Ryan Vogelsong continues to struggle. In the top of the ninth he walked the bases loaded before being pulled for Scott Mathieson. Combine that with the blown save in Durham a few days ago and it doesn’t look good for the Kutztown University alumni.
Mathieson came in and finished the game earning his 14th save of the season. He also earned a spot on the IL All Star roster.
See you tomorrow!
Oink!

What a good game tonight!! I’m not sure what’s up with Vogelsong. It wouldn’t surprise me if he goes on the DL with Turf Toe soon. I hate to say it, but it seems like when some of the pitchers get in a slump, they go on the DL for Turf Toe. Just my opinion though… š
Neil Sellers made 2 great plays to his right at 3rd base tonight.
I caught myself humming “Bump Bump da da da Bump, Bump Bump Bump” to the melody of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida tonight.
If John Mayberry doesn’t hop, skip and jump before making that throw, he would have gunned down Matt Macri at home rather than having the throw arrive a half step too late.
Has anyone else noticed that Rochester shortstop Trevor Plouffe kisses his bat whenever he leaves the ondeck circle to come up to bat?
In the mid 1970’s Ollie Brown played his final 3 seasons as a member of the Phillies after having a few very good years with the expansion San Diego Padres. His nickname was Downtown.
Forgot to mention:
From Todd Zolecki’s blog….
J.A. Happ made a rehab appearance last night with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He will throw a bullpen session tomorrow in Pittsburgh, where he will be evaluated. He likely will make another rehab start. Happ’s rehab ends July 7, so the Phillies will have to make a decision on him soon.
If they determine he is not ready for the big leagues, they could apply for a rehab extension. Pitchers have 30 days to rehab an injury once they make their first rehab appearance. Happ also has options. They could option him to Lehigh Valley if they can’t get an extension.
I read that. I guess he wasn’t wild on purpose. It’s a shame. He was doing so well before the injury.
I couldn’t make it to the game but it was good to see a win, an Aguila HR along with a Domonic Brown HR.
I’m not sure if anyone has taken a look at the attendance, but the IronPigs have surpassed the 9000 fans’ average a night. They stand at 9016 ! Way to go fans !! Our total attendance for the season is 342, 638 with 38 openings !
Columbus has the highest in total attendance with 361, 504 but with 43 opening for an average of 8407 !
Keep it fans !
I wasn’t at the game either, and I’m sorry I missed it. I’m going to miss tonight, too, but I’ll be there Friday, Sunday, and Monday before leaving for DC.
Hope DB doesn’t get called up before then! I’ve been calling him DB (mostly to myself) but I can convert to Downtown.
Here’s a couple Downtown things that have been on my mind: I know it’s only coming up on a week, but at what point to you consider moving him in the order? I know, he seems really comfortable at six, and that’s probably about where he’ll hit in Philly to start, so there’s no rush, but… love to see him at three. Move Junior down.
Also, what happens if there’s an outfield injury in Philly? Junior or Downtown? Hmmm. Probably Junior batting from the right and having some experience and perhaps more outfield flexibility.
Go Pigs!
You also have to keep in mind when that free agent ticker starts for Brown. Mayberry made his debut and I would think that the Phillies did not anticipate pulling Brown to the bigs this year at all.
So what’s all the stuff they’ve got with them?
There’s a laptop of course, I know the one thing with the slide controls is to adjust transmission volume levels — that, I’m dang sure, is the thing that acts up whenever they do this or when Matt is on the road — woe is him if THAT should get struck by a home-run ball, never mind TV2 and their sign — and off to Jon’s right, a Scotch tape dispenser?
I’m of course going to be at tonight’s game (1)…sec 120 but I’ll be by later. Can Dan or somebody get a picture of me with or without the cap? The one I have on Twitter and elsewhere looks so dang depressing…
Basic radio stuff. My experience was always with military grade radios, not so saavy with the fancy stuff. Just another battery operated grunt here. š
Grunts, ground-pounders, etc.
Every day heroes, Kehl.
Happy Fourth.
Ah ha!
A great American Hero…and growing IronPigs Legend.
Freedom Ain’t Free.
Thanks, Kehl (and all other veterans out there)
