Game Notes 7-22-10 & More

I’m starting this around the 7th inning of tonight’s game so will write about the game towards the end.

Pitching

Pitching for the Ironpigs is going to get crazy in the next few days. Kendrick and Happ are both scheduled to pitch this weekend for the Phillies so that leaves starters Nate Bump and Drew Carpenter lined up for the Pigs on Friday and Saturday. We still have Mazone and would probably see him Sunday or a spot start from someone in the bullpen.. thinking Concepcion or Savery.

The bullpen could also be a factor. If any of these trades go through, expect our bullpen to take a hit. With names like Mathieson, Zagurski and Schwimer in there.. they could leave quickly. Last notes I saw about a possible trade for Roy Oswalt has him more interested in going to St. Louis but word is they want the Astros to pick up most of his salary obligation. Others point out that Oswalt is less interested in a media frenzy ala New York and that would put Philadelphia in the con list. I really wonder what it’s like to feel that wanted as a player. To have just about every MLB team in contention wanting to trade for you. Must be a tough time…. thinking that Oswalt has a family and has established some solid roots in Houston. We’ll see.

Tonight’s game is showcasing Brandon Duckworth on the mound and the Duck Pond would be proud of his performance! Duckworth went 5.2 innings allowing 2 runs on 3 hits. He struck out 11 and allowed 4 walks!

The Pigs scored 3 runs on 8 hits and one Indian’s error. Not too exciting on the hitting but it got the job done!

The Ironpig’s have their first four game sweep of any opponent in the 2010 season! It is also the longest winning streak of this year! Let’s keep the winning going into this 8 game home stand! A lot going on during this homestand.. will post more tomorrow about all the fun stuff coming up.

Fun stuff AND winning baseball… how about that? 🙂

See you tomorrow at The Coke!

OinK!

Looks like Mazone on Friday, Bump on Saturday and probably Carpenter on Sunday. And hopefully with the DH for the entire homestand Andy Tracy will be able to play.

Highly touted 22 year old Orioles pitcher Chris Tillman was demoted back to AAA this week and is expected to pitch for the Tides on Saturday. He was up with the O’s for 2 months last year and for a little over a month this year. On June 28th, 2009 Tillman pitched at Coca-Cola Park and retired the first 17 batters he faced before J.J. Furmaniak reached base on a walk. Tillman took a no-hitter into the 7th inning when Andy Tracy got the first hit with 1 out and the Ironpigs went on to rally for 6 runs in that inning, winning the game 6-1 despite being outhit 12-4.

I was in Reading last night for the R-Phils game. It was a great time. It was the first time I’d been there, somehow–meant to go many times but never made it. I had tix for the Strasburg game on a Monday in April, which was rained out. I finally got around to exchanging them. My 7 year old wanted to know where the club level was, and why weren’t we sitting in it. Ahh, kids.

As far as the ‘Pigs perspective:
Harold Garcia is playing very well at 2B, hit his first AA HR last night, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him in Allentown next year.

Cody Overbeck at 3B looked better than his numbers. He played well in the field and looked good at the plate. We could see him at some point next year.

Matt Rizzotti at 1B was the guy I was looking forward to seeing. He’s been killing in AA, but he had a bad night at the plate: 0-3, 3k. He looked OK in the field, though, which seems to be the big concern in the organization. Not a ton of chances, though. Chalk it up to a bad night, but Andy Tracy’s safe for now.

We know Mike Spidale, and I’d welcome him back to the ‘Pigs OF next year if that’s in the cards. Bozied was on the DL. Richie had the night off. Galvis needs more work at the plate, but he’s young. Naylor pitched a good game–kept them off balance the whole time, but I’m not sure he’s got the stuff for AAA just yet. I could be wrong–just not enough ‘pop.’

Other ballpark notes: free parking rules. Miller Lite booth guy gave my young one a ball he collected from the Aeros in warmups. Our section’s usher was the EXACT same usher we have in 209 at The Coke. Boy was he surprised to see us! First thing out of his mouth, “Look, there’s no koozies here…”

    • Reading just has a great feel to it… I hope it doesn’t lose that with the planned renovations.

It’s ALL club level there! haha 🙂

that’s one of those comebacks, if I’d only been thinking faster….

What kind of renovations are planned? It was PACKED last night. Great time. Great crowd. Staff was super.

      • From what I read earlier in the season they plan to tear out the existing concessions area and expand the locker rooms to encompass all of that area. Move all concessions out to the right field food court. Call me sentimental but that main gate and original concessions stand MAKE this park what it is. That old school feeling without being too far out of reach of the current. Just my thoughts.

Yeah, I would agree. And you know how I like to eat. Walking all the way out to right field almost cancels out part of the eating. Almost. My kids loved the old concourse-under-the-stands thing. Oh, and forgot to mention: it just happened to be wing night when we were there. Outstanding! Crowded, but outstanding!
