Late Game Notes 4/23/10

Last night was an odd game…

It was 95 degrees when I got to The Coke and it was muggy and miserable. It didn’t stop the capacity crowd of 10,000 from showing up though.

Boy scouts of all ages packed the stand and outfield lawn for their annual campout in the outfield. No word on what the movie selection was, but I would imagine it was baseball related… πŸ™‚

The Tide got off to an early lead of 3 to 0. Then came the rain. We saw it coming and it came hard. The grounds crew was on top of it and the tarp came out faster than I think I ever have seen it before. We were doing good hiding behind the K sign right up until my umbrella decided to turn itself inside out. For a few seconds the Noise Nation took the brunt of the storm before ducking down and covering ourselves with a blanket and what remained of the umbrella. Soon the rain stopped and play resumed. Just before the second, and shorter, rain delay… the Tide added another 3 runs making it 6 to 0.

The Ironpigs did manage to score a few runs in the 9th.. Domonic Brown and Andy Tracy came through again but too little too late. The Pigs loaded the bases several times but failed to push a runner across before the 9th. A lot of ifs and buts for last night.

Quite possibly the oddest thing to happen to us last night was due mostly to the weather conditions that followed the second rain delay. In the top of the 9th inning Brian Gordon struck out a Tide and we went to our duties of hanging a K and making that coffee cup steam and the button stuck. That cup kept belching smoke for a cool 30 seconds before we could get it to stop. Then the cloud decided to make Chris Duffy its target. It moved slowly down towards the field before completely encompassing Duffy.

Duffy looked back at us with questioning eyes…

Then it completely overtook him.

We offered our apologies and got a laugh out of Duffy. Tide centerfielder Matt Angle came out in the bottom of the ninth and jokingly said he could still catch a fly ball regardless of our “efforts”

Need to be more careful with that button. Perhaps if we had a remote control for it…

Tonight is white out night. I plan to bring my bottle of typewriter correction fluid along… (yeah I’m full of em today!)

Pregame show at Pitcher’s Sports Bar and Grille. Come out and support the Broadcast team and meet Matt Provence, Jon Schaeffer and Alex Cohen before the game and enjoy the show. Starts at 5:00 today and is just across Union Blvd. from The Coke.

OinK!

  1. Service Electric was talking about this too lol. Announcers were saying all we need is a fog delay to cap off the night.

We were shocked at how long it stayed. It was crazy. What a night. Also, I got some shots of the tarp being put on and pulled off from upstairs.

The movie was the baseball version of “Air Bud’..it din’t end till nearly 3am. It was hot, sticky and stagnant in the tent..a brutal night..not much sleep but it was definitely cool getting up and stepping out into centerfield this morning. A great job by the pigs for everything they did for the scouts..they had a great time. Too bad the outcome of the game couldn’t have been better…next year!
