Can the Ironpigs Make it to 4th Place?

After the past month or so of terrible baseball.. the Pigs have a 3 game winning streak! Yikes!

Looking at the standings, the Pigs are now 4.5 games ahead of Rochester who is sitting in the International League Basement.

But when you look up you will see that Pawtucket has lost their past 3 games and hold only a 3 game lead on the Lehigh Valley for 4th place.

Can the Pigs set a goal to push into 4th and actually make it?

Is this one of those midnight blog posts where I try to see something positive out of this season?

With two more games against the Red Wings this series.. I would say yes to both questions.

Last year the team finished just under .500 and in 3rd place in their division. This year, they are worse than the team was in 2008. The difference is that Rochester has been worse. Let’s put Pawtucket into that category too!

I think they can do it.. especially with call ups about to happen.

What do you think?

OinK!

Thankfully Rochester has no depth. Tonight we could not touch David Bromberg the Red Wings 22 year old starting pitcher for the 7 innings he pitched. The Wings bullpen however could not hold a one run lead. Based on what I saw I am very happy with the Pigs comeback win but Bromberg was the real story. Scott Mathieson eventual got the save for the Pigs but I am beginning to question whether he can be a quality Major League set up man or closer if he loses command after he has had consecutive outings or pitches more than one inning. Mathieson is the best reliever we have but he scares me when he is not completely rested. On the good side of things it was great to see John Mayberry again find his outfield arm and base running speed in the ninth inning.

  2. Yes they CAN. Will they? Who knows with this team. I did notice that there was a different atmosphere at CCP tonight. Were people pumped because Howard was going to be there? Maybe. A group handed out rally towels on the 1B line as well. That gets people into it.

But I noticed the team was different too. After they won, the guys were smiling and seemed happier than I’ve ever seen. As long as they can play good baseball, no matter the record, I’ll be happy.

Here’s a quote from the paper today:

“We talked the other day, and we know we can’t get back to .500, and we know we can’t make the playoffs,” Mathieson said. “So we just made a pact to play hard and finish the year strong. Losing isn’t fun. Winning’s fun.”

I’m thinking maybe this kind of pact would have been a good idea on April 22 rather than August 22. But that’s just me. I don’t have any inside information, but I’m thinking Huppert has to go. I know he’s beholden to the Phillies, but maybe he’s lost the fire. Then again, he has made some derogatory public comments about the six-year vets… Thoughts? Vote of ‘no confidence’ for Huppert?

In any case, I’ll be at the game tonight. Well, I’ll be at the stadium; we’ll see if there’s a game. I bagged last night to stay home and smoke chicken as I didn’t have my regular seats anyway.

I think Dan said it in a blog lately. I think, for some of the IronPigs players, the last 2 weeks become a “try-out” to make the Phillies postseason roster.

In theory, the whole of the IronPigs season is a tryout for the Philadelphia Phillies postseason roster…
