The Phillies invited free agent outfielder/second baseman Delwyn Young to spring training for a chance to make the Phillies. The 28 year old Young has a .258 lifetime average with the Dodgers and Pirates.
Other players invited to spring training are:
Robb Quinlan, a utility man who has played for the Angels in all or part of the past 6 seasons. He’ll be 34 years old by opening day.
Brian Bass, RHP who has pitched with the Twins, Orioles and Pirates in the past 4 seasons.
Catchers Tuffy Gosewisch and Joel Naughton
Pitchers Michael Schwimer and Michael Stutes

Young = DeWayne Wise
(but might make the Phils with the Werth departure if Mayberry and/or Brown have underwhelming S/Ts)
Bass = Duckworth +/or Vogelsong
Quinlan = Cairo
(except, I’m an Angels fan and think Quinlan probably plays harder)
Right?
I haven’t seen enough of any of them to judge but I’d say Young is a little more like Jason Ellison but he’s a switch hitter and I’d be surprised if he plays defense as good as Wise or Ellison. For his career Delwyn Young hits a little better from the left side. I’d think the Phillies would hope he was better from the right side vs. LHP. He could be a backup plan if Brown struggles early.
As for Quinlan, he might stick as a right handed bat off the bench to replace Mike Sweeney. He’s a career .298 hitter vs. LHP and 19 of his 25 career homeruns have come against lefties. He probably has a little more pop in his bat than Miguel Cairo.
