Phillies signed 34 year old pitcher Matt Anderson to a minor league contract today. He was a former top draft pick by the Tigers in 1997. Top as in #1 overall. Players drafted after him that year include J.D. Drew, Troy Glaus, Vernon Wells, Lance Berkman and Jayson Werth. He was in the major leagues by 1998 but hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2005. The latest information I found shows him with Charlotte in 2008. It’s possible he could turn out to be this year’s version of Kris Benson, Rodrigo Lopez, and Oscal Villarreal, all of whom were trying to recover from injuries to their pitching arm. When he was healthy, Anderson’s fastball was in the 98-100 mph range.
