Ironpig Spring Training Game Results 3-16-11

From @Pigsradio’s own Matt Provence:

The Phils’ Triple-A squad improved to 2-0 w/ a 7-5 win over the Triple-A Pirates today. Roy Halladay started, but the bats were again story.
1B Matt Rizzotti (2-4, R) & LF Tim Kennelly (2-3, HR, R) paced a 10-hit attack w/ 2 hits & 2 RBI apiece. DH Sebastian Valle (1-2) and SS Troy Hanzawa (1-4, 2B) had an RBI each… Halladay’s line (5 ip, 7 h, 4 r, 3 er, bb, 3 k) wasn’t as pretty as RHP Eddie Bonine’s (3 ip, 4 h, r, er, bb, 3 k). Drew Carpenter — working in relief this season — tossed a 10-pitch, perfect 9th inning for the SV.

Adding the box score at 6:46pm EDST

My Call for the Best Ironpig Promotion of 2011

The Ironpig’s just announced that photo’s were available on their website of most of the promotions and giveaways for the 2011 season. You can view them here.

I also noticed something new scheduled for Saturday July 30th.

The “Wild Thang” Tim Lepard and his traveling rodeo Team Ghost Riders will be making an appearance at The Coke!

Yeah, I thought the same thing you are now… Who?

I looked them up and get this… it’s a group of monkeys riding dogs, rodeo style. Monkeys riding dogs!

From Tim Lepard’s website:

My accomplishments include the (IFR) International Finals Rodeo, 3 Time Winner for “Comedy Act of the Year”, 3 Time Winner for “Dress Act of the Year”, and 1 Time Winner for “Barrel man of the Year”. I am the only showman that has performed in all 3 coliseums in Oklahoma City at the IFR and the only person to win all 3 awards in the same year. In the IFR Showcase, I won “Comedy & Dress Act” a total of 6 times. I have participated in the Columbus Ohio Pet Expo and have been featured on America’s Funniest Home Videos, FHM Magazine, Sports Illustrated and had a scheduled appearance on the Jay Leno Show and Steve Harvey’s “Big Show”. I also served on the Board of Directors of the Mississippi Stock Dog Association.

Lepard has been in the rodeo world for over 28 years, is a champion bull fighter and was influence by the late great Lane Frost.

I think this is going to be the best this year.. what do you think?

Tickets Still Remain…

.. is the answer I received when inquiring if Opening Day at the Coke (Coca Cola Park for the newer readers) was sold out.

I also haven’t seen any mention of ticket sales in local media as I remember in the past. With just three weeks to go until the gates at The Coke open for the exhibition game with the Reading Phillies, it seems that the initial onrush of ticket seekers has not yet depleted the 10,000 ticket maximum for attendance.

The Ironpig’s have been pulling in some serious attendance figures since 2008. Last year the organization led the entire minor leagues in average per game attendance. In 2009 we came in second. What will attendance look like in 2011?

Several factors could lead to the not-yet-sellout of the first game of our beloved Ironpigs. First, the team’s newness has clearly worn off. This is season number 4 and I rarely speak to anyone in the Valley who has not been to at least one game. Next you have the pre-All Star break schedule stocked full of home games in the less than weather friendly months of April, May and early June. From someone like myself who sits in the wind facing the sun, I can say it gets cold out there. Really cold. Of course the team could have something to do with it too. Spending only 1 game with a winning percentage at .500 and never over .500 it could be the lack of competativeness by the team affecting the sales.

So we ask ourselves:

Is it worth sitting in the cold to see the team lose anyway?

Should I spend the cash to go out and freeze?

It’s the first game, there are 71 more games this season that could be warmer.. why bother?

Well, I think it’s worth it. You see football fans out there every winter freezing away in snow, rain and sleet. Why not baseball too? It’s not about the team, it’s not about the free plastic stuff handed out.. it’s about the people. The friends that you have gotten to know over the last 4 years. It’s about the atmosphere of baseball here in our back yards. It’s about that first undercooked hotdog and a flat warm beer. It’s about America’s pasttime.

Get out there and get your tickets… tomorrow I may post that Opening Day has sold out and then you will be.. well not out in the cold, but you will probably be at home wishing you had tickets.

“Routine” by Phillies Prospect Eric Pettis

Routine
A lot about being an athlete revolves around the word routine. Outside of the actual performance on the field, most of an athlete’s life deals with a routine. Whether it’s sticking to a routine, or practicing to make difficult things seem routine, or tweaking a routine to improve it, the word routine keeps popping up. The better an athlete can stay within the confines of a routine the better they can deal with unexpected things that might be thrown at them. Look at it this way, if you are trying to remember a phone number and then someone tells you four more numbers to remember then that task becomes more difficult. But, if that original phone number is already memorized (in other words, part of a routine), remembering those extra four numbers will now be pretty easy. Well, it’s the same thing in sports. The harder you work to make things second nature, the better you will be able to cope when those “extra” things that will inevitably happen in every game.

The idea for this post came to me because of two things at practice today. As I woke up this morning I looked outside and saw that it was pouring rain. Now, as a native southern Californian, the mere sight of rain usually disrupts my normal routine. Most SoCal people shut down their lives on the few days a year that we see a sprinkle. But today it didn’t affect me. I got to the field, though soaking wet, and went through my normal routine. I lifted a few weights, did a few arm exercises, ate some breakfast, and was ready to go. And as I stood under one of the covered areas of the facility doing my arm bands it really hit me, “hey this is pretty cool”. Personally, I am huge into routines and like get myself into good habits. So, as I watched the rain hit the asphalt I thought to myself that my day was surprisingly unaffected by it. At that moment I was just really appreciative that the Phillies provide us with the facilities necessary to get into a good routine and stick to it. It might seem trivial, but to an athlete who is trying to get better every day it’s huge.

The second instance at practice where the idea of routine hit me might be a little bit of a stretch, but try to stay with me. Like I said it had rained earlier in the day, and after practice we had to condition. Today was a semi-light day of 8 poles followed by pick-ups. So, as I was running my poles on the warning track I noticed that the inside path on the track was muddy while the outside path was much dryer. Now, having the weird psychological/philosophical brain that I do, this got me thinking about routine. I likened the condition of the warning track to people’s path in life. While the shorter path on the track might look as if it will get you to where you want to go with less work, you’ll get “muddy” in the process. If you take the longer path, it might be a bit more difficult but you will come out the other side “cleaner”. Trading less running for getting “muddy” is like trading doing less work for better chance of failure. While, trading more running for being “clean” is like doing more work for better chance at success. In other words, in life and especially in sports, there are no shortcuts. You have to put in the work to get the results. The harder you work within the confines of your routine, the “cleaner” and better prepared you will be for what life and sports has to throw at you.

Whether you buy in to my babble or not doesn’t really matter. Because I buy into it. And that’s what a routine is all about. It is something that YOU know YOU can do every day and believe will make YOU better for the ware. And as an athlete, routine really is the name of the game.

Phillies prospect Eric Pettis is detailing his minor league experience on his blog, “just a MINOR perspective.” Special to the Horn & Bell, we will be following Eric in his first season in the Phillies organization.

First AAA Ironpig Spring Training Game Results

As reported by the Ironpig’s media office:

The Phillies’ Triple-A spring training squad (1-0) won its opener over the Triple-A Blue Jays, 6-5, at Carpenter Complex on Monday.

The bats provided the headlines, as the team belted out a 13-hit, six-run performance.

1B Tagg Bozied paced the attack, going 2-4 with a HR and 2 RBI. CF Rich Thompson (1-3) also contributed 2 RBI and a team-high 2 stolen bases. Former Colorado farmhand OFs Matt Miller (2-5) and Chris Frey (2-2, 2B) also collected multi-hit games.

RHP Drew Naylor (3 ip, 4 h, 2 r, 2 er, 2 bb, 3 k) got the start, but it was former IronPigs RHP Nate Bump and RHP Michael Schwimer that provided the pitching highlights. Bump — who entered in the fourth inning — went two scoreless frames, allowing just one hit and one walk. Schwimer dazzled with two perfect innings, fanning four of the six batters he faced to earn the save.

Bozied, 31, is likely to make the IronPigs Opening Day roster after being added to the Phillies’ 40-Man Roster this winter. The Sioux Falls, SD, spent last season at Double-A Reading – where he led Eastern League in AVG (.315) while setting a career best in HR (27) and tying a career high in RBI (92). Among his 2010 accolades, Bozied was selected as a midseason EL All-Star and a participant in HR Derby as well as being named Double-A Hitter of Year by MiLB.com. Signed by Philadelphia as a minor league free agent 1/16/10, Bozied was once a top prospect for the San Diego Padres – who drafted him in the 3rd round of 2001 and promoted him up to Triple-A in just his second affiliated pro season in 2003. But a freak injury derailed his progress in 2004. Bozied was hitting .315-16-58 in 56 G before a season-ending knee injury on 7/19 — which occurred in a team celebration when crossing home plate after hitting a walk-off grand slam. The career .283 hitter is still looking for his first taste of the Major Leagues with what would be his sixth Triple-A franchise, should he stick with Lehigh Valley.

With a camp day tomorrow, the Triple-A Phils will next play Wednesday at the Triple-A Pirates at the Pirate City Complex in Bradenton, Fla. First-pitch is scheduled for 1 PM.

Kram’s Korner – Kramming the Suggestion Box Full

Kramming the Suggestion Box Full (part 1 of 7)

In my free time leading up to the 2011 IronPigs season, I’ve been spending my time thinking. I’ve been thinking of things to make the IronPigs experience better. Please don’t misunderstand; I don’t spend time or energy on something I don’t care about. I love going to the games, and I promote the ‘Pigs every chance I get with friends, family, and business associates—not to mention the money I spend on tickets and hats and food and drink. I want to make the Pigs better. No, I want to make them THE BEST. Some of these things might be impossible. Some of them might not be financially feasible. Some of them have already been done… I’ve got 31 ideas in seven areas. Perhaps these will get people talking. Maybe the IronPigs are listening. The talent on the field is the responsibility of the Phillies. These are things under “our” control.

Stealing a line from the TUMS commercial—and drinking parties everywhere—it’s something my body needs anyway. Topic number one is FOOD AND DRINK.

1. Food and Drink

a.The Pig Stop is a concession on the Club Level where the featured menu item changes nightly. In 2008, there was Prime Rib, Steamship Ham, among other upscale dinner items. In 2009 the Pig Stop mysteriously disappeared mid-season (I know why). Pizza and peanuts were still available, but no menu item. 2010 brought a new Pig Stop, with sandwiches and other rotating food and dessert items, but not as upscale as the original. I suggest the return to glory of the Pig Stop menu for real food/dinner choices. (Foreshadowing: I might suggest the addition of an on-site restaurant. Loved my nights at Bo Brothers’ in Moosic and McFadden’s in Philly last year.)

b. There’s a meeting room on the club level, to the left after you get off the elevator, to the left of the Kitchen entrance. Last year they served “free food” to club level ticket holders on the first Monday game of each month in that room. One month it was wings, the next hoagies, then corn dogs. It was kind of nice. I’d suggest, though, that they make better use of that space. There are some nice flat screens in there and some windows. Perhaps: The Iron Lounge VIP Area. Add Iron Lounge access to your club level ticket for only $X.99 per game. Hors D’oeurves, wait service, and the ability to watch the pregame show—and other televised sporting events—with sound, on select nights. WiFi access. Maybe some type of buffet? (Foreshadowing: I might suggest turning on the sound—or at least the closed captioning—on some of the screens on both levels. )

c. Last year, most Thursdays brought a pig roast to the AT&T Plaza. I suggest continuing to enhance special offerings at field level, in the plaza. We could add some other kind of special night during the week: Clam Bake Wednesdays? BBQ Chicken nights when the MudHens are in town? Brisket Sundays? Promote with local BBQ restaurants. Hey, if Reading can have seafood…

d. Adding local flavor is always a good idea. There are always people at the games who don’t live in the Lehigh Valley. I love going to games in other cities and having a chance to test some local food. My suggestion: Yocco’s. I know it competes with ballpark hot dogs, but adding a small Yocco’s stand out in left field would make it a destination and harder to get than the regular dogs—plus they would be more expensive. But, it would be unique to CCP and the Lehigh Valley. If Yocco’s isn’t interested, then perhaps some other unique local food vendor. (note: since this idea, The Gyro Company is opening in the park. Not exactly local unique, but it’s a start, and I’m all for it.)

e. I don’t know how sales are going for the Picnic Patio, but an alternate use would be to open it up for an ‘all you can eat’ night with the bracelets and whatnot like other stadiums are doing. Again, not all the time, just on occasion to pump up mid-week attendance and fill the patio with GA folks– or just people who are too hungry to find their way back to their own seat. Integrate with “Pig Out’ marketing. And certainly you could change it up with a ‘wing night’ or some such rather than the traditional ballpark fare—just don’t require that we purchase a patio seat. OK, I guess we can sell tickets without using the ‘all-you-can-eat’ trick. But in the future they should consider this…

f. Enhance additional non-beer adult beverages at field level. There are the occasional Bacardi and Sangria-like beverages available, but they are hard to find and there aren’t many choices. I’m fine with the beer personally—plus I can get whatever I want at the Club Level Bar—but my wife won’t sit at field level because she can’t get a non-beer drink easily (among other reasons). So I’m suggesting a selection of other malt or wine beverages at the Bud Light Trough might be a good idea for the ladies. Integrate with Ladies’ Night Thursdays? Special discounts for the Diamond Divas?

g. More suggestions from Mrs. Kram:
i. Pre-packaged salads at Hog Heaven in the club level and the Pizza Stand at field level.
ii. A nicer cup to put the $7 wine in at the FMO Painting Bar.
iii. Diet-caffeine-free sodas more available. (umm, water?)

Stay tuned for parts 2 through 7 of Kramming the Suggestion Box Full!

This Game Makes Me Sick

May 2, 2009 seemed like just another ballgame at Coca-Cola Park but with a record of 10 wins and 11 losses the Ironpigs were on the brink of history.  Entering the second month of their second full season, the Ironpigs were known for one thing,  losing.  But on this balmy Saturday night, for the first time in franchise history, a .500 record was within their grasp.  Standing in the way was one of the most storied franchises in minor league baseball, the Toledo Mud Hens.   The temperature at gametime was in the mid-60’s and there was a mild breeze.   Most of the 8,375 in attendance were there for the Men’s T-shirt giveaway but the true diehard fans were hoping to see the Ironpigs reach their impossible dream.

On the mound for the Ironpigs was Drew Carpenter, probably their most consistent starter in 2009.   He seemed up to the task by retiring the Mud Hens in order, striking out two in the top of the first.  Rich Thompson led off the bottom of the first with a double and stole third after Jason Donald flied out.  Mike Cervenak followed with a single scoring Thompson from third.

Carpenter struggled in the second inning.   Jeff Larish led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch.  With 2 outs, Mike Hessman walked.  Larish and Hessman both scored on a triple by Will Rhymes.   It would be the first of several key triples by the Mud Hens.

The Ironpigs went quietly in the bottom of the inning and Carpenter settled down to retire Toledo 1-2-3 in the third.  In the bottom of the third, Mike Cervenak and Andy Tracy drew two-out walks and John Mayberry followed with a single to drive in Cervenak with the tying run.

Jeff Larish led off the 4th for Toledo and doubled to center field.  A double by Clete Thomas drove in Larish to put Toledo up 3-2.

The 5th inning saw each team score a run.   Jeff Larish drove in a run for Toledo with a basehit to center and Cervenak drove in Jason Donald after he walked and stole second.

Steve Green replaced Carpenter on the mound in the 6th inning and allowed 2 runs on a double by Max St. Pierre.  The Pigs fought back with a 3 spot in the bottom of the inning.  Jeremy Slaydon (double), Rich Thompson (triple) and Jason Donald (single) each had an RBI.  After 6 innings the score was 6-6.

Tyler Walker replaced Green on the mound in the 7th. Both teams got 2 runners on base but failed to score.   Cedrick Bowers came in to pitch the 8th and issued one out walks to Max St. Pierre and Ryan Roberson.  Don Kelly was put in to run for St. Pierre and he scored the go ahead run when Danny Worth singled to center.   Kelly remained in the game in left field.  It would turn out to be the single most important move in the game.

Coming in to bat in the bottom of the 8th, the Ironpigs now trailed 7-6.   Toledo brought in pitcher Freddy Dolsi to pitch the 8th inning.   The first 2 batters he faced got on base.  J.J. Furmaniak was hit by a pitch and Rich Thompson walked.   Jason Donald tried to bunt them over but Furmaniak was thrown out at third.  Mike Cervenak followed with a single to score Thompson from second with Donald moving to third while Cervenak took second on a throwing error.  The score was now 7-7 and the Ironpigs had runners on 2nd and 3rd with just 1 out and Andy Tracy due up.  To everyones dismay, Tracy was issued an intentional walk to load the bases.  The strategy backfired as Mayberry followed with a single to score Donald.  With the bases still loaded, David Newhan walked to force home Mike Cervenak.  After a pitching change, Paul Hoover ripped a double to right field scoring Tracy and Mayberry.  After the smoke had cleared, 5 runs had crossed the plate and the Ironpigs held a commanding 11-7 lead with only one more inning to play.

Ninth inning:  enter Gary Majewski.

Brent Clevlen leads off with a homerun to right field making the score 11-8.  Mike Hessman singles and Will Rhymes walks.  That brought Don Kelly up to bat for the first time after entering the game as a pinch runner.  Kelly rips a triple to center field scoring 2 runs and Dusty Ryan follows with a single to bring home Kelly with the tying run.   Score tied, 11-11 after 9 innings as the Ironpigs fail to score in their half of the 9th despite singles by Cervenak and Tracy.

Mike Koplove replaces Majewski in the 10th inning.  Jeff Larish leads off with a single to right but he is forced out at second when Brent Cleven fails to bunt him over.  Clete Thomas then reached on an error by David Newhan, moving Cleven to second.  Mike Hessman then pops out for what would have been the third out if not for the error.  Will Rhymes then drew a 2 out walk to load the bases for Don Kelly.  For the second straight inning Kelly triples to clear the bases.  3 runs score, all unearned.

The Ironpigs didn’t score in the bottom of the 10th and the home crowd went home disappointed as the Ironpigs dropped a heartbreaker to the Mudhens in 10 innings 14-11, but more importantly,  it dropped their record to 10-12 after being so close to 11-11.

The game ended at approximately 11:25 PM after 4 hours and 18 minutes.  Mike Cervenak had four hits for the Ironpigs while Rich Thompson, Andy Tracy, and John Mayberry added 2 each.  Jeff Larish  had 3 hits for the Mud Hens and appears to like hitting at Coca-Cola Park.   4 others had 2 hits each, most notably Don Kelly who had a big 2 run triple in the 9th and a 3 run triple in the 10th after entering the game as a pinch runner in the 8th inning.  And after blowing that 4 run lead in the 9th inning,  Gary Majewski would never be the same.

It would be another 2 months before the Ironpigs would finally reach the .500 mark.  It happened in late June when they broke up a no-hit bid by Orioles pitcher Chris Tillman in the 7th inning and defeated the Norfolk Tides 6-1.  It moved their record to 38-38 and came in franchise game number 220.    After 3 years and 432 games, they are still striving for a record that shows more wins than losses.

How the Ironpigs Got Me $325! – Kram’s Korner

Special to the Horn & Bell blog, I give to you… Kram’s Corner

The story begins last November. Our eight year old dishwasher died—a horrible, messy, and dramatic death that involved water shooting across the room and leaking into the cellar. A trip to Sears in Whitehall yielded a new model. The kind salesman provided a sale price, a discount for using a new Sears charge account, and some paperwork for a rebate from PPL for upgrading to a more energy efficient model. Weeks later, we received the rebate in the mail in the form of a debit card for $30.

Fast forward to last week. I picked up my ticket cards for the 2011 IronPigs and received the nice gifts of the canvas prints and the coupon books. Whilst browsing and flagging the appropriate coupons, I noted an “e-power” ad from PPL, which reminded me of the dishwasher. However, it also reminded me of the new heat pump I put in last year. A couple clicks of the mouse and I had the appropriate paperwork for a $325.00 rebate. Oh, who knows, perhaps I won’t get the money. Perhaps they’ve run out of money or perhaps I’ve filled out the paperwork incorrectly. In any case, though, I feel like the IronPigs got me $325 thanks to the coupon books. If you need me, I’ll be waiting by my mail box.

Disclaimer: I do not have any financial interest in Sears. I do own PPL stock. And, thank goodness the IronPigs did not take my slogan suggestion for 2011. PIG OUT may be unoriginal and promote over-eating, but it’s better than: 2011 IRON PIGS. WINNING! DUH!
