Game Preview 4/22/11 Buffalo!

The Ironpigs will take the field in Buffalo for the first time in 2011 tonight at 6:05pm. You can listen online or on 1320AM or 1230AM in the Lehigh Valley.

Taking the mound for the Pigs is 29 year old Brian Bass. Bass has not received a decision in his first 2 starts and is sporting a 4.50 ERA. He has struck out 8 compared to allowing just 3 walks.

For the Bison, Josh Stinson will try to keep the Ironpig’s current hitting slump going. Stinson, 23, was recently promoted to AAA from the Eastern League. In his one AAA start he went 4 innings allowing 6 hits and 6 runs. Maybe the Pigs have a golden opportunity to come around and rejoin those teams who cross the plate early and often.

The weather in Buffalo is very similiar to what we’ve seen here lately. Low of 42 and rain heading in around 9:00-10:00pm. Hopefully they can get this game in and pull out a win.

OinK!

Game is streaming live on Milb.com. For $6.99 a month, it’s a pretty good deal. As I indicated a few days ago, it seems like every single AAA affiliate other than LHV streams their games live on the site. A good way to follow the Pigs when they’re on the road.

Back in 2006 or 2007 the Ironpigs signed what I believe was a 10 year deal with Service Electric Cable TV to have all 72 of their home games broadcast exclusively on the Service Electric Television Network. That contract giving SECTV exclusive rights may be the reason Ironpigs home games are not streamed on milb.com because to stream those games would strip Service Electric of its exclusivity.

Interesting tidbit of information with respect to what the other AAA clubs are up to…

Streaming is a great way to watch a sporting event that otherwise would not be available through conventional means. I watch a boatload of sports from Europe that would never be on American television — cable, DirectTV what have you. For free, too, but that’s another matter.

Seven bucks a month probably forks out to roughly fifty cents per IronPigs away game — that’s not so bad at all, I would readily say.

Great post, Matt — great information you have shared here.

Anytime! I take it you signed up?

I hope in a few years this becomes the standard and every minor league game is streamed. Granted, a lot of the production crews aren’t the best, but it’s serviceable.

Actually, for as familiar as I am with the streaming sports thing — this is the first I heard of this for minor league baseball thanks to you.

  5. I just signed up for the streaming feed. I’m having difficulty realizing the Pigs are the away team in gray… keep catching myself cheering at the wrong moments. πŸ™‚
