Catching up during this holiday weekend

It’s been a busy week for me so to catch up with a few things…

First off, hail and farewell to Cory Sullivan who was released to add Scott Posednik to the Ironpig’s roster. Posednik actually broke up today’s potential perfect game by Rochester’s highly touted prospect Kyle Gibson. Gibson tossed the first 6 innings like a finely tuned guitar and came out with the win as Ironpig’s starter Bump allowed his ERA to rise to 6.18 on the season allowing 6 runs in 5 innings.

It was a beautiful day at the Coke today. Saw a bunch of friends and was surprised at the low attendance for a Sunday 84 degree partly cloudy day game. 9,080 fans purchased tickets today and I would say it was close to that many in attendance. Also noticed a familiar face in the stands that I normally see behind a ticket window. It seems the office is giving employees a day at the game to enjoy. Awful nice of them. Get a perspective of the experience from our view point.

Seems the Ironpigs can’t quite pull out the brooms this year. Another 3 win 1 loss series. Not that I’m complaining as they have been playing far beyond the Pig teams of the past but it would be nice to pull out the broom and wave it proudly following a third out.

Last night the Noise Nation also got to see the LV Steelhawks 3rd consecutive win! The Hawks took down the Richmond Revolution in their final home game of the 2011 season. Really great people in that organization and look forward to 2012! Ran into a reporter from the NY Times who was looking to learn more about arena football and smaller market sports fans. Nice guy and all had a great time!

Saw a tweet earlier from our good friend Tommy V out in Reading.. Mike Spidale became the leader in all time hits for the Reading Phillies this afternoon. Good to see such an accomplishment by a good guy.

That’s about I have today. I’ve been getting a lot of sun this week and finally installed my AC.

It’s time for a nap.

  2. Hi Dan! Hope you are enjoying what is turning out to be a fine Memorial Day Weekend. I just wanted to comment on one statement in this entry that I respectfully disagree with, you write, “was surprised at the low attendance for a Sunday 84 degree partly cloudy day game. 9,080 fans purchased tickets today and I would say it was close to that many in attendance. ”

You consider that low attendance? That is only 920 persons short of a full house! Pretty impressive for any game but more so when you consider that this is a major holiday weekend (and a four day one at that). Many people go out of town (perfect day to be at the shore), or attend backyard cookouts. There is also a lot going on this weekend competing for local and tourist dollars just a few examples being; the Sands Hotel opening weekend, Mayfair, events at the new SteelStacks, municipal pools opening up, car shows, etc.

Considering the many options this weekend and the fact there was no giveaway today, I’d say the pigs did quite well. I stayed home to work on schoolwork but from what I saw on TV the place looked packed, even club level which is notorious for empty seats due to the businesses that have the bulk of the seats up there (and not using them) was pretty full.

Yeah, I was gonna post the same thing. Our standards for attendance are HIGH here in the Lehigh Valley! Sell every seat? (8100) Not good enough. Must sell all the tickets! 🙂

Nevertheless, I’m proud of our ability to support this team. I hope it results in a hockey team at some point and at some location. Also, got a mention from Ryno in the paper this morning, “great crowds at home.”

I was at the game Friday, but skipped Saturday and Sunday. My seats were full, though. Unlike some of those businesses, I make every effort to make sure my seats aren’t empty!

      • Me too Kram, I was there Thursday but my seats were spoken for the remainder of the homestand! I hate to have a wasted seat if at all possible and when I do, I make sure to use the credit for another game.

The Lehigh Valley certainly has proven it is hungry for professional level sports. Hopefully a hockey arena will become a reality although I am not fond of the location or the use of eminent domain to accomplish it.

      • I guess I’m feeling competative with this stat. Louisville is creeping up with an 8,624 average per game attendance. Only 166 away from the Lehigh Valley’s 8,790 average.

It is correct that our standards are, indeed, higher than perhaps some other clubs dare set such bar because this is OUR town and this is OUR team…as compared to just any old hum-drum, run-of-the-mill town or team, please understand.

Yes, we should most definitely prefer a genuine sellout — a sellout being defined as “all available tickets for any given game having been entirely sold with none remaining for the general public”.

And brooms are brought for a reason, not just to stand there idle!

Having said this…it is a fact that 3/4 every series can be considered acceptable as it does surpass the minimum .500 requirement.

Furthermore, The Corner Seat and Kram 209 do have valid points with respect to the prevailing circumstances…
