The Ironpigs took down a highly touted prospect tonight defeating Julio Teheran and the Gwinnett Braves 12 to 2 in tonight’s Memorial Day game in Gwinnett.
Surprisingly enough, Barfield’s 4 for 5 night didn’t make him the star of the game. Jeff Larish went 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored, a triple and 2 home runs amassing 7 RBI. He was also intentionally walked and had 11 total bases for towards the win!
Shoeless Eddie Bonine also had a decent showing. Tossing 68 pitches (43 for strikes) Bonine went 4 strong innings allowing only 4 hits and 1 run, striking out 6. Looks like Eddie is coming around. Drew Carpenter also had a strong night going 3 innings allowing 3 hits, 1 run and also struck out 6. Chapman closed out the final two innings of the game.
The big news is the Phillies announcing that Vance Worley will be coming back to the Pigs, for now. I haven’t seen any decision on who goes up to the Phillies but heard rumors of a pitcher heading up for the time being. Best guess would be Mathieson or Zagurski but don’t be surprised if it’s Carpenter.
Keeping it short for now. I’m sunburnt and tired after a long weekend and do need to be at work by 5:30am tomorrow.

I think the long term plan is to come up with a permanent number. He was wearing #4 at Coca-Cola Park and #2 last night at Gwinnett.
Zagurski got the call to take Worley’s spot. I don’t think the Phillies have much confidence in J.C. Romero anymore.

Couple thoughts on this.
Supposedly Gload has some kind of injury that at some point soon needs to be dealt with but since he’s the only left handed pinch hitter at this point the Phillies need some kind of coverage for when they 15 day him and that’s where Podsednik could come in handy.
When healthy he can equally hit LHP and RHP and that alone is something that no one on the Philly bench can currently do.
And speaking of the Philly bench, the Phillies biggest Achilles heel this year when the team loses is usually from lack of base runners and that is something that Podsednik will do, get on base. The Phillies are about in the middle in the NL in SB, AVG, OBP and Podsednik if healthy could help with all three.
Take a look at the Phillies bench so far:
Brown while he has been hitting will not be used against LHP and is 0 for 3 against them.
Gload is hitting .289 but has one AB against LHP (0 for 1).
Schneider was hitting .173. Enough said.
Martinez is hitting .184. Enough said.
Francisco is hitting .227 and even still he’s hitting .196 vs. LHP. A bust.
Orr was hitting .230 and was 0 for 2 against LHP.
Mayberry whose forte is supposedly hitting LHP is only hitting .256 against them and .238 overall.
Whereas Podsednik is a career .270 hitter against LHP and last year hit .289 against LHP and .300 against RHP. If he’s healthy at some point Gload is hitting the DL, Mayberry is coming back to the Pigs or Martinez is going back to the Nats.
Podsednik would not have asked for his release from Toronto to come and play here if there weren’t some nod and wink deal about major league playing time included.
