State of the Pigs Luncheon – 7/15/11

Submitted by Noise Nation member Jason DiPro. Thanks Jason!!

The State of the Pigs Luncheon today was a fabulous event enjoyed by nearly 150 people in an intimate setting on the Club Level at Coca-Cola Park. Ryne Sandberg was the main speaker and he was joined by players Rich Thompson (CF), Michael Schwimer (P) and Scott Mathieson (P). The event was MC’d by the voice of the IronPigs Matt Provence.

Ryno spoke of the team as a whole, the players and how he enjoys helping them on their way to the bigs. He’s glad to be back with the Philly organization after starting his own career here. Sandberg believes the IronPigs are a class organization and thanked the fans for all of their support. He was most pleased with the progress of the team and the cohesiveness despite the tremendous amount of player transactions of late. Sadly, Ryno stated Jeff Larish was out for the year with his broken leg suffered at last night’s play at the plate. It is clear that Ryne Sandberg will coach in the big leagues. The real question is when and with whom. We can only hope…

Local product Rich Thompson mentioned stealing bases, playing quality defense in center-field and being led by an aggressive base-running manager like Sandberg. While Rich has had a taste of the majors with the Royals in 2004 he is still playing hard in order to make it back to the bigs. When the subject of home runs was mentioned Ryno joking said “I don’t give him the home run sign very often” whereas the steal sign is frequently issued.

Virginia’s Michael Schwimer touched on his All Star appearance and the fact that he would cherish it no matter where his baseball career may take him. He also elaborated on his choosing baseball over basketball despite being recruited by Duke among others. Michael chose baseball because he enjoys the mental aspect of the game more so than basketball. It was comical when Matt asked Michael to stand up and his “phearful phro” nearly touched the ceiling. He went on to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of being 6’8″. His advantage is the path of delivery he can place on the ball coming from such a high angle. A disadvantage is if one small mechanic is off it only gets magnified by his size.

Canadian born Scott Mathieson spoke of his multiple Tommy John surgeries and how it has affected his career and his approach to pitching. He’s happy to be back with the Pigs with a chance to possibly regain his stature as a starter.

A big thanks goes to the IronPIgs, Ryne Sandberg and the players who took their time to support the fans and the IronPigs Charities. They all thoroughly enjoyed “talkin’ baseball” with those in attendance. These gentlemen have a genuine love the game and it shone brightly today. I also had the pleasure to meet Mrs. Sandberg and Mrs. Thompson who are two of the most gracious and supportive baseball wives there are.

It was a well planned and executed event by the IronPigs Charities. They have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for various local charities mostly through the Jersey Auctions. Support them whenever you get a chance. All in all it was a wonderfully informative and funny afternoon with some great food by Chef Jan Giejda.

See ya at the Park!

Pawn Stars at Coca Cola Park?

I was notified this morning that there was a Rick Harrison of the History Channel’s show “Pawn Stars” sighting last night at Coca Cola Park.

I do remember seeing a billboard on Rt 22 showing the Pawn Stars gang would have a show at one of the casino’s in the area. After digging a little, I found the Pawn Stars website (http://www.gspawn.com/) and their crew is touring around the country at various casinos. So a sighting from a reliable source and circumstantial evidence that might place him in the area…. I would say if you think you saw him, you probably did.

Good stuff and thanks to our friends at Philly Pretzels for sharing with us!

IronPigs Game Results & IronPig Game Results 7/14/11

Game 1:
The IronPigs slapped out 7 hits and only scored on Brandon Moss Hogg’s 2 run homer in the 6th losing their first post allstar break game to the Syracuse Chiefs by a final score of 2 to 3. Brian Bass took the loss, his 7th of the season putting his record at 4 wins 7 losses for the year. He didn’t pitch all too bad but the runs weren’t there for the Pigs who tend to score later in games and in a 7 inning double header game it just wasn’t enough.

Arguably the most crucial play in the game came in the bottom of the 5th inning, when with Jeff Larish on 2nd and Dane Sardinha on 1st, Brian Bocock singled and Larish was waved around 3rd by his manager. There didn’t appear to be a play forming at home and the ball was cut off by the 3rd baseman and gunned home. Althought the throw was a bit up the line Larish appeared to jump to his left, avoiding the tag, but Larish collapsed before touching the plate and was tagged out. Trainers spent about 10-15 minutes tending to Larish and he was carried off the field. Initial reports are that something is broken and broken somethings are seldom good. Broken to me sounds like bone and that would essentially end Larish’s season. Thoughts and prayers going out to Larish for a speedy recovery. There was a little debate about sending Larish home on that play. I agreed with sending him home as many throws from the outfield are cut off or off target. The counter argument, with one out had Larish held at 3rd, the tying run would have scored on a weak groundball towards the 2nd baseman would have resulted in only the second out. Again, I love aggressive baserunning and wish the circumstances had turned out better.

We’ll probably see the return of Frandsen sooner rather than later.

Game 2:
With game 1 behind them the Pigs came out strong. Scott Mathieson started the game and allowed only 1 hit in 3 innings. Unfortunately it was a 2 run home run. The Pigs came back with 3 runs in the bottom half of the inning and added 2 more in the 4th. The bullpen took over and Joe Savery received his 1st IronPig win of the season with Grilli getting a hold and Michael Schwimer his 7th save of the season.

See you tomorrow!

Part Kram’s Korner – Part Dan, IronPig Ticket Exchange?

Our good friend Kram revisited a great topic today and found a glorious example of what we could have here as IronPig fans.

In the 9th inning the Attendance for each game at The Coke is announced and often there is a groan heard around the stadium when the number is revealed. I hear it every single time…

“Lot of empty seats to be 9,534”

“Club level looks empty”

“Who buys tickets and doesn’t go to the games?”

“Man there should be something so people can get tickets to sold out games if others aren’t showing up”

Well, there is a way. We just need the IronPigs to lead the way.

While Coca Cola Park leads pretty much the entire minor league system in per game attendance average (9,018 per game) we do see seats that aren’t sat in. There are those who head out to the trough or rough it in the outfield with the Noise Nation but I’d bet there are a fair amount of tickets that fall into the “Not Used” category.

Kram sent me an email today showing me a great way to bridge this gap. The Lowell Spinners (Class A Short Season for the Red Sox) have created a Ticket Posting page.

Details from the Spinner’s website:

PLEASE READ THIS IMPORTANT PROCEDURAL INFORMATION

The intention of this TICKET POSTING option is to bring fans together to post their respective situation of obtaining or unloading tickets. This is done in a simple format.

Fans are directed to go to the proper link to select if they wish to “post a listing to obtain tickets to a sold out game” or to “post a listing to unload tickets to a game you can no longer attend”.

After making your selection you are able to select the options of posting your game selections or view what other fans have posted. Fans are invited to check this section of the site to read how to contact the users looking to obtain or unload their tickets.

Even though Spinners Management oversees the activities of these postings, we inform you that this is NOT a secure transaction. It is strictly between the fans. The Spinners are just trying to bring people together and will not resolve disputes that might arise amongst fans.

(The Lowell Spinners are not responsible for ticket transactions via this Ticket Posting method. The Spinners conduct financial ticket operations through the corporate office at LeLacheur Park and through Choice Ticketing, our secure internet server. This Ticket Posting Guest Book forum is NOT part of our financial ticket operations nor is it a secure method.)

Keeping it simple, the Spinners disclaimer absolves them of any liability and provides fans a means of exchanging tickets legally. Heck there’s even a trade forum for giveaways.

Kram tells us, “They get nothing other than less empty seats and more people willing to buy season ticket packages because they know they won’t get stuck with tickets or M-Th vouchers that they can’t use.” (Unused Season Tickets, like rained out games, can be exchanged for a M-Th game)

Granted, it’s no Stub Hub or Ebay… more like Craigslist, but it affords the opportunity to help each other out.

In my opinion, yes my opinion, this will only work if the IronPigs themselves create it. The Spinners post this link on their website on the Ticket Sales page. That way people know about it and can find it while looking for tickets on the team’s site. Really, if we set something up like that here on the Horn & Bell blog how many people would see it/know about it? Not many.

I encourage you to leave feedback in the comments section.

Food for thought though. Thanks Kram for sending over!

3 Little Pigs Went to Utah

Tonight was the long anticipated AAA All Star game in Salt Lake City, Utah. It seems like just yesterday we were excited about the announcement of the 2010 All Star game being held here in our town. Now it’s a year in the past.

For our little piggies:
Erik Kratz went 0 for 2.

Michael Schwimer got to throw 3 pitches as he ended the 8th inning with a double play grounder.

Mike Zagurski came on to get two quick outs in the 9th and that’s all she wrote.. International League defeats the Pacific Coast league by a score of 3-0.

See you tomorrow at the doubleheader. Don’t forget it starts an hour earlier and I hear rumors of a real live stagecoach and some horses being there. Looking back at the mounted color guard a few weeks back I’d recommend that Rich Thompson watch his step in centerfield. 🙂

Transactions – 7/11/11

If you hadn’t heard, Scott Mathieson will be returning to the IronPigs after the All Star break. Also, Joe Savery will be returning to the Pigs after his “transition” to a position player. (Read this first via @PhuturePhilz on Twitter)

Between Reading and Clearwater, Savery is hitting .292 with 12 doubles, 3 triples and 3 home runs along with 31 RBI. Savory also made 6 relief appearances allowing 8 hits and 1 run over 10 innings. He struck out 12 and walked none.

Word on the street is that Savery will enter the IronPigs (currently) depleted bullpen. With the success that IronPigs have had in the Philly pen we might not see some of them back. Of course this also give manager Ryne Sandberg an extra bat on the bench and we all remember those stories of Savery going 2 for 5 and lowering his batting average to under .500 earlier this season.

Might be an extra boost for the team and very happy to have both Savery and Mathieson back on the roster.

Food Challenge at CCP?

If you’ve been following IronPig’s Executive Chef Jan Giejda’s Twitter account, @IronPigsChef, you know that he is preparing a monster food challenge for us hungry fans.

Some photos recently posted:

The roll

Add some bacon

Add burger, cheese and onion rings

The finished burger, next to a 2 liter bottle.

It appears to be a giant cheeseburger with a mass of bacon, cheese and onion rings on a bun the size of a basketball.

So far, no name for this monster burger has been released.

I do have to admit I am not a fan of this year’s tagline, “Pig Out” (I would rather cheer for our Pigs being safe) but seeing these photos makes me want to truly pig out.
