I.L. Playoff Scenarios & Detail

The International League posted some great info this morning on the playoff races. (Link at end of post)

First Round Schedule (Best of Five):

September 7,8
West Division Winner at South Division Winner, North Division Winner at Wild Card Winner

September 9,10*,11*
South Division Winner at West Division Winner, Wild Card Winner at North Division Winner

Governors’ Cup Finals Schedule (Best of Five):

September 13,14
North/Wild Card Series Winner at South/West Division Series Winner

September 15,16*,17*
South/West Division Series Winner at North/Wild Card Series Winner

* If Necessary

With either the Division win or Wild card win, the IronPigs will play in that series. With a Division win there would be home games on Sept. 9th, 10th & 11th. With a Wild Card berth, Home Games on the 7th & 8th. If the Pigs do make the final cut to the Cup Finals, they would have home games on Sept. 15th, 16th & 17th.

If two teams finish tied for the Wild Card, the IL playoffs officially expand
to include both teams. The tied teams will then compete in a one-game
first round series on Tuesday, September 6 to see who will advance to
face the North Division Champion in the traditional four-team format.
The following formula will be used to determine which club will serve as
the home team for the one-game playoff:

1. Most wins in the head-to-head series
2. Club with the highest winning percentage during intradivisional play
3. Club with the highest winning percentage against other division winners
4. Coin toss

That’s the scoop. Enjoy!

Cubs Dismiss GM – Just One Year for Ryno?

Our resident Cub fan is probably jumping for joy this morning.

News that Chicago Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry has been dismissed by the club. Assistant GM Randy Bush (That name has come up a lot this week) will take over in the interim.

How does this affect IronPig fans? Well, just about EVERY Cub fan I know spit in the general direction of Wrigley field last year when Sandberg was passed over for the Cub’s manager spot. Could we lose Ryno to the Cubs after just one season in Lehigh Valley?

I’d say the chances are very high.

What do you think?

News With LoLa & Transactions!

Our wonderful friend LoLa with some Steelhawk updates!

Other notes,

In their latest signing for the 2012 season, the team announced the addition of former Southern Methodist University Quarterback Justin Willis.

While at Division-I SMU, Willis was named C-USA Offensive Freshman of the Year in 2006 along with the team’s Offensive MVP award winner in both 2006 and 2007. The signal caller also holds the school records for career touchdowns (58) and yards (2,944 passing-699 rushing) in a season, accomplished in 2007. He has a career 62% completion percentage while throwing for 4,991 yards and 51 touchdowns, rushing for 1,067 yards and six touchdowns, and catching 14 passes for 143 yards and one score. The Quarterback spent 2010 in the German Football League (GFL) playing with the Marburg Mercenaries.

“Justin brings a wealth of experience and athletic ability to our team,” stated Steelhawks Head Coach Rich Britt. “He has the opportunity to come in here and fight for a starting spot and hopefully lead this team to where we all want it to be. We are bringing in a talented mix of skill position players, and guys along the lines to help our Quarterbacks succeed to their fullest potential. We couldn’t be more thrilled to add Justin to this team.”

In other Steelhawks news, the team plans to announce their first open tryout for the 2012 season in the coming days. Last year, the team signed 12 young men from two open tryout dates, which was the most in the IFL in 2011.

Also want to add that the Steelhawk Booster club is up and running. It’s free and the Booster club is looking to make the upcoming season a great time! I heard rumors of bus trips and other events as well.

Steelhawk’s Booster Club Website

I love how involved the Steelhawks are with fans. There is a Fan Advisory Board, a Booster Club. They really care what the fans want, what the fans look forward to and that everyone has a good safe time.

Get out there and check out the wonderful things the LV Steelhawks are doing. They are working hard to make you happy and what makes them happy is having fan support. Season tickets are on sale. $8 a game to start.

SteelHawk Notes – Signings, Car Washes & Tryouts

The SteelHawks are still busy out in the community and working on building a quality team for next year.

From the SteelHawks:

The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks are proud to announce that nine more players have signed onto the Steelhawks 2012 roster. Irani DeAraujo, Anthony Amoo, Isiejah Allen, and Maurice Bowers have all re-signed with the Steelhawks. They are proud to announce the addition of John Halman, Joshua Pugh, Derrick Zieglar, BJ Taylor, and James Steadman (WR/QB) to the Steelhawks roster as well.

Irani DeAraujo, was the league leading wide receiver before suffering a what would be season ending neck injury. In the five games DeAraujo played in, he recorded 275 yards for 5 touchdowns, including the game winning reception in the Steelhawks first ever win against the Richmond Revolution.

Anthony Amoo was another Steelhawk that unfortunately had his season cut short due to injury. An offensive/defensive lineman, Amoo was able to play in four games, tallying 7 tackles.

Another offensive/defensive lineman was added in Maurice Bowers. Bowers returns to the Steelhawks and will look to make a huge impact on the line.

A mid-season addition to the 2011 Steelhawks was Isiejah Allen, a defensive back from Fordham University. Allen had 2 interceptions and 27 tackles in his time with the Steelhawks last season. He will look to contribute big to the Steelhawks defensive backfield.

The Steelhawks made another big splash with the signing of Wide Receiver John Halman. Halman was the 2011 IFL Rookie of the Year Runner Up with the Fairbanks Grizzlies. He had a total of 703 yards and 18 touchdowns on the season with the Grizzlies. With Halman, the Steelhawks add to an already strong receiving core.

Joshua Pugh is an offensive/defensive lineman from the University of Alabama who most recently played with the Omaha Beef. Joining him on the lines are Derrick Zieglar (offensive/defensive lineman) and BJ Taylor (defensive lineman). The last current addition, James Steadman is a dual offensive threat as a either a wide receiver or quarterback.

Stay tuned as the Steelhawks continue to add talent for the 2012 season!

IronPig Game Results 8/17/11 – On the Road Again

The Pigs all played strong today and defeated the Rochester Red Wings by a final score of 3-1.

The Pigs head out to play 2 in Rochester, then 4 in Indianapolis and 4 in Louisville. Go get em Pigs!

In other news, before the game it was announced that Erik Kratz and Michael “Phear the Phro” Schwimer had been named IronPig player and pitcher of the year. Congrats to both and well deserved!

Just something else I thought about today. We haven’t seen Tagg Bozied playing much these days. Back in April when Matt Rizzotti was sent to Reading I heard a lot of complaints. Looking at it late in the season it looks like it was the better of the deal. Bozied has played in 53 games this season at LV compared to Matt Rizzotti playing in 119 games in Reading. Balance the scale, be in AAA and not play much or in AA for a lot of games. I’d rather play every day.

IronPig Game Results 8/16/11 – Whew!

The Pigs pulled one out tonight and it was a well needed boost. They defeated the visiting Rochester Red Wings by a final score of 5-2.

It was a close game until the bottom of the 8th, when leading 2-1, the Pigs opened up for 3 insurance runs.

In his first start Dave Bush looked good! Bush went 6 innings allowing 3 hits and no earned runs striking out 5 and walking none on 89 pitches.

Brandon Moss Hogg had a key hit with the bases loaded in the 8th inning that secured the win for the Pigs.

In the playoff race tonight, Pawtucket, SWB and Gwinnett all lost.. with Charlotte winning.

The IronPigs remain in second place by 1 game. Reaching their 70th win of the season the Pigs are within one game of their all time best win total of 71 and are only 2 games away from guaranteeing a .500 season!

So far, Rochester, Norfolk and Toledo have been eliminated from playoff contention.
