What can Brown do for you?* IronPigs 10 – Braves 1

*That headline appeared on the May 1-6 cover of Pork Illustrated and how prophetic it was!

Domonic Brown rips the first of his two home runs.

“Downtown” Domonic Brown went 4 for 5 with TWO home runs a double and single, 3 RBIs and 4 runs scored – all leading to 11 total bases – “How do you like all that?”

Brown is hitting  .415 (17 for 41) with 13 runs scored 2 doubles 4 HR, 6 RBI and   1.211 OBP in his last 10 games. In June (4 games) he’s hitting .500!

Domonic Brown is back – like it or not nay-sayers!

Kevin Frandsen joined in with a 3 for 5 effort throwing in a double 1 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Starting pitcher Tom Cochran warms up with an interesting grip.

Steve Susdorf 3 for 5 with 3 RBI and a run scored.

Even Birthday boy Cody Overbeck added a 2-run dinger.

Pitching was also stellar with Tom Cochran getting the win with a 5 inning 1 hit, 0 run effort. B.J. Rosenberg gave up the only run on a solo shot by the Braves Ernesto Mejia. J.C. Ramirez fresh off the R-Phils joined Brian Sanches for 1 each no hit – no run innings. The staff would only surrender 2 total hits.

All was well until Erik Kratz got nailed in the back following Brown’s 2nd HR. Benches cleared, bullpens cleared, words were exchanged – no punches were

thrown. Braves Pitcher Todd Redmond was ejected along with Braves Manager Dave Brundage.

With three more games left in the series it just might get nasty. We’ll also have to wait and see who if anyone is issued suspensions and/or fines after review by International League President Randy Mobley. Note that the IronPigs bench never crossed the foul line – we’ll see what happens – it could be interesting (or ugly).

Great night at the Red Robin Oasis table area – great view – great food – great people. Even Mrs. DiPro made her way to the game this evening!

‘Pigs can’t weather storm – lose to PawSox 4-3

Despite another Domonic Brown HR the IronPigs were unable to get the win. Unfortunately, Andres Blanco had a throwing error

What the Hail?

that resulted in an unearned run and struck out looking to end the game with the tying run on base. He’ll shake it off after taking some frustration out on the bench with his bat. (Report courtesy of Cheryl Pursell)

Derrick Mitchell got hit in the hand and according to a tweet by Chuck Hickson (@PHLBaseballNsdr) “it doesn’t look good”. Let’s hope it’s not too bad we certainly need D.Mitch in the lineup!

Tough one for LHV to lose and we’ll see if we can complete the split on Monday at the final doggie day – 7:05pm start!

Beautiful day for a game – it’s didn’t end that well for the ‘Pigs – or the fans

Great outing by Horst – 2 innings – 1 hit – 0 runs – 1 BB – 0 K

OUCH! Speedy Recovery D. Mitch!

Just after the game it started to rain…

…then it started to blow – hard – at least 6 umbrellas inside out – a jacket flying up in the air and even a plastic bag…

…and then it got worse…

…just before the hail started!

Lindsey Knupp has a “banner” day – Best Promotions Directory in the Minors!

The Story of the Bang-A-Banner Giveaway 2012

The IronPigs game at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday was designated “old school” and there was to be an “old school banner” giveaway to the first 3,000 fans over 18.

What most people don’t know the bang-a-banner that was given out was not the original, intended old-school banner giveaway. As I made my usual trek around the Park I learned of this debacle. I then sought Lindsey to get her reaction to the “case of the missing banners”. We all know how rabid some ‘Pigs fans are with their giveaways so imagine if no giveaway available.

That is in fact what might have happened but you didn’t even know it did you? Most fans where unaware since Lindsey Knupp, Director of Promotions/Entertainment was able to find a replacement, get it designed, printed and have it delivered in time to save the giveaway all at the last-minute possible – Awesome!  BTW, we will see those missing banners one day soon!

Most casual fans and even some of the “seasoners” don’t realize all that Lindsey does which is way more than moderating the on field activities and calling out launch-a-ball numbers – that’s the fun part I’m sure – but there is much more!

Director of Promotions/Entertainment Lindsey Knupp has a “banner” day – old school style!

As the Director of Promotions & Entertainment, Lindsey is responsible for, ordering promotional giveaways, all in-game entertainment, generating the nightly PA script & game production schedule, run staff meetings before each home stand, book bands & National Anthem singers, coordinate the Internship Program for thirteen full-time interns, manage promo crew game-staff, and manage the mascots, performers and probably more!

“How do you like all that”

So next time you see Lindsey around the Park be sure to thank her for keeping everyone entertained and for being a major reason capacity crowds continue to fill Coca-Cola Park. Great Job Lindsey!

Dishing Grateful (for all the great staff at CCP)

‘Pigs split with PawSox – Mitchell 8 RBI’s

Three straight singles by John Suomi, Cody Overbeck and Steve Susdorf  loaded the bases for  Derrick Mitchell. Having a good view from section 107, you could just tell it was not going to hook foul and was blasted into the lower parking lot. Certainly a shame to waste a Grand Slam on a loss (7-6) but Mitchell gets player of the day ripping 8 combined RBI’s both games.

Mitchell also had the game winning hit in the first game in “walk off fashion” ripping pitcher Tazawa into left for the game-winning base hit plating Domonic Brown who singled. The night was filled with plently of action and stellar play from both teams. All in all a great nearly 5 hr 45 min of baseball in front of a capacity crowd at Coca-Cola Park.

Pitching was decent enough but Dave Bush got a little roughed up surrendering 9 hits, 5 ER, and 3 HR including a two-run shot by Lars Anderson. Always remember don’t make fun of ‘Larrrrsss’!

LHV has split 3 double inning 7 games so far this season, which considering past results isn’t that bad. Now I sort of hope there are more of them.

Pix after the boxes.

IronPigs Facing Same Problem as Phillies

Who would have thought the Phillies would be riding the basement of the National League East this long?

Just as surprising is that our beloved IronPigs, led by Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, would be in 4th place in the International League North division.

They are both playing hard, winning some and losing some, but their place in the standings isn’t as bad as it would seem.

The Phillies and Pigs are playing in some tough Divisions.

Looking at the Pigs first…

Their current record is 30 wins, 24 losses. A nice .556 winning percentage but 3.5 games back.

Currently in 4th place in the IL North behind Pawtucket (34-21,.618), Buffalo (31-23,.574) and SWB (29-23,.558).

If the Pigs played in the South Division they would be in 2nd place and 2 games back of first place Gwinnett (32-22,.593) and above the South’s 2nd place team Charlotte (30-25,.545).

If the Pigs played in the West Division they would also be in 2nd place and 1.5 games back from first place Indianapolis (31-22, .585 and above the West’s 2nd place team Columbus (25-28, .472)

While transactions and callups impact every roster in the minor leagues the Pigs are facing stiff competition in their division and while one of four teams may take a dive over the stretch, don’t expect all three of them to do so.

The Phillies are riding that same train.

The Phillies (27-25, .519) are in dead last place in the National League East Division. While only 3 games back from first there are 4 other teams they need to get past before climbing to the top of the mountain.

Washington (29-21, .580) is on top and fighting hard to stay there.

Miami (29-22, .569) are riding close behind.

The Mets (28-23, .549) are in the thick of it.

Atlanta (28-24, .538) is also playing a strong game.

The Phillies would be only .5 game out of 2nd place in both the West and Central divisions.

Of the 10 teams in the National League who have .500 or better records, five of them are in the National League East. All five teams are .500 and better.

You tell me…. How important are these division games?
