IronPigs Limp Home to Face Surging Braves

The red-hot IronPigs shuffled off to Rochester earlier this week on the heels of a home sweep of the then-first-place Tides, ready to push for a .500 record and perhaps use it as a spring-board to challenge the division leaders, Buffalo and Pawtucket.  Alas, it was not to be.  The ‘Pigs ran into former ‘Pig–and recently demoted–Vance Worley on Memorial Day and lost decisively.  The bats came alive the next three games to the tune of 24 runs.  However, it was not to be, as the they dropped all three games 8-7, 8-7, and 13-10.  The pitching staff, thin from roster moves, injuries, rain delays, and day games couldn’t seem to get an out–or a pitch–when they needed it.  That’s how it goes, though, and we roll on.

The Gwinnett Braves arrive in town from Syracuse having gone 8-2 over their last 10, and having won 3 of 4 from last-place Syracuse.  Gwinnett’s record is similar to the IronPigs’.  Here are the projected pitching match-ups for the wrap-around series:

Friday:  Miner vs. RHP Tim Corcoran (3-3, 3.19)

Saturday: Rosenberg vs. RHP Omar Poveda (3-3, 2.84)

Sunday: Martin vs. LHP Yohan Flande (former Phillies Farm Hand) (2-4, 4.70)

Monday: Valdes vs. LHP Sean Gilmartin (3-3, 4.06)

..

What to watch for:

  • Monday’s starter, Sean Gilmartin, is the #4 prospect in the Braves’ system
  • CF Todd Cunningham is the #8 prospect in the Brave’s system
  • RF Joey Terdoslevich is the #14 prospect in the Brave’s system
  • RHP David Hale (mostly a starter, but in relief yesterday) is the #19 prospect.

Who’s Hot:

  • Josh Fields has a 10-game hit streak where his average nears .500
  • Recently added INF Troy Hanzawa (up from Reading in the Utley/Martinez move) is hitting .435 since joining the IronPigs
  • Joe Savery and Justin Friend have been solid out of the ‘pen of late
  • The IronPigs continue to lead the league in triples, and have already surpassed their total from all of last season

Who’s Not:

  • IronPigs’ starters have not gone more than 5 innings much at all this season.

..

At the Park:

Friday: Fireworks and Dueling Pianos

Saturday: Russian Bar Trio

Sunday: Dog Team Performance, Kids Run the Bases

Monday: Team Photo and Autograph Night

..

PigStop Menu (Club Level Featured Items):

Friday:

The Heffer Express- Pulled Pork, Coleslaw, Onion Rings, served on a Kaiser Roll-$6.50

Saturday:

Dirty Dog-Jumbo All Beef Hot Dog topped with Pulled Pork, Cheese Sauce, Bacon.-$6.00

Sunday:

The Sensation-Spicy Battered Chicken Breast topped with Fried Banana Peppers, Munster Cheese, and Salsa- $6.50

Monday:

The Meaty Monster-Ham, Roast Beef, Turkey, Coleslaw, Thousand Island Dressing, Served on Marble Rye- $7.00

..

One more thing:

Pure speculation, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Carlos Zambrano added to start the game on Sunday.  Reading’s home as well, or they could leave him in Clearwater.  Just a hunch.  If nothing else, it would be interesting and it would add some innings.

..

See you at the park,

@Kram209

IRONPIGS’ AW SHUCKS ROASTED CORN CROWNED “LOCAL LEGEND” CHAMPION IN #FOODFIGHT CONTEST

Aw Shucks Advances to Final Four; Final Round Voting Now Underway

(Allentown, Pa.) – The IronPigs’ Aw Shucks roasted corn received the most votes in their bracket of Minor League Baseball’s #FoodFight and advanced to the contest’s Final Four, defeating 15 other creative and distinctive choices to be crowned MiLB’s “Local Legend” champion. Now it’s time to belly up once more and pick Aw Shucks roasted corn as the best overall ballpark concession in all of Minor League Baseball!

aw_shucks(photo from www.awshucksroastedcorn.com – Go Visit!)

Final Four voting is now underway and runs through 12 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6. Cast your vote today and be eligible to win great prizes, including a trip to Coca-Cola Park or even a year-long supply of Aw Shucks corn!

The are two ways to vote and enter to win prizes:

  •         Online: Click here to cast your ballot online.
  •        Via Twitter: Follow @IronPigs, tweet the hashtag #foodfight and include the words “IronPigs” or “Aw Shucks” to cast your vote. Retweets count, too!

There’s nothing quite like biting into an ear of “Aw Shucks” Roasted Corn at Coca-Cola Park. A staple of IronPigs baseball since the 2008 debut season, Aw Shucks is comprised of locally grown ears of sweet corn brushed with butter and a secret blend of southwest spice and parmesan cheese.

Aw Shucks is not only a local favorite but also receives high-praise from visitors, including Sports Illustrated’s Peter King, who had this to say about the corn during a visit to Coca-Cola Park: “Now, I’ve been to many ballparks in my 52 years, and I’ve never seen a roasted corn concession at a ballpark. But this corn was … well, I’ll just say if I had my choice between a Kansas City Porterhouse or an Aw Shucks ear, I’d take the corn.”

The #FoodFight Final Four is comprised entirely of teams in the International League with the Gwinnett Braves (Knucksie Sandwich), Toledo Mud Hens (Fantastic Freeze Sundae) and Durham Bulls (Nuke Dog) rounding out the competition.

Single-game tickets, mini-plan packages and group tickets for all IronPigs home games presented by Capital BlueCross, are on sale now and can be purchased at the Coca-Cola Park Ticket Office, online at www.ironpigsbaseball.com or by calling (610) 841-PIGS.

The 2013 IronPigs baseball season is presented by Capital BlueCross.

A ‘Tail’ of Two Pigs – The Tides They are a Changin’

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs have now won 6 straight, 8 of their last 10 and are 1 game shy of returning to .500 after completing a 4 game sweep of the Norfolk Tides on Sunday.

It was a much different ‘tail’ during the last series with the Tides as the IronPigs were outscored 37 – 22 and hit just .225 with RISP. The bullpen struggled and surrendered an 8.18 ERA during the 1-3 series.

What a difference a week makes as the Pigs improved their RISP average to .324. The bullpen came alive and improved their ERA to 2.25 during the series and held the Tides to just a .147 average with RISP – .252 overall.

Changing Tides

The Pigs are on the road for a  4 game series against the Rochester Red Wings starting tomorrow. Recent Reading Fightins call-up LHP Greg Smith (1-0, 0.00, 5.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K) is scheduled to go for the IronPigs against former IronPig and Philadelphia Phillies RHP Vance Worley (recently optioned from the Twins).

The ‘Pigs will try to keep the streak going with game time at 1:05 p.m. tomorrow. Lehigh Valley will return on Friday for a 4 game series against the  Gwinnett Braves all with fireworks and the Dueling Pianos!

Happy Memorial Day!

Go Pigs!!

Norfolk and Neighbors

Tonight the Pigs solidly put down the Norfolk Tide 4-0.

That makes 4 wins in a row for our beloved Pigs!

The Pigs are closing in on that valued .500 record and at 22-25 they are only 3 games away. They have 2 more home games with Norfolk then on to 4 in Rochester. Followed by 4 at home against Gwinnett.

****

What I find a little surprising, based on early results, is the SWB Railriders recent collapse. They have lost 6 straight and 9 of their last 10 games.

This places the IronPigs in 3rd place in the IL North division 4.5 games behind Buffalo and 5.5 behind division leader Pawtucket.

Just speaks volumes on the volatility of minor league baseball. Stars are being pulled up and disabled lists come calling.

Here’s to a great season so far!

@Ironpigs Secret to Defeating the @NorfolkTides ?

Looking over the stats of last week’s IronPig series with the Norfolk Tide I saw an interesting trend.

May 14th: 7-12 Loss

Cochran – 4 innings, 5 hits 5 runs allowed. Throws Left
Friend – 2 innings, 0 hits 0 runs allowed. Throws Right
Stutes – 1 inning, 0 hits 0 runs allowed. Throws Right
Savery – .2 inning, 2 hits 4 runs allowed. Throws Left
Diekman – .1 inning, 3 hits 3 runs allowed. Throws Left

May 15th: 1-10 Loss

Morgan – 3.1 innings, 10 hits 10 runs allowed. Throws Left
Jimenez – 3.1 innings, 4 hits 0 runs allowed. Throws Left
Ramirez – 1.1 innings, 0 hits 0 runs allowed. Throws Right

May 16th: 6-8 Loss

Cloyd – 3.1 innings, 11 hits 7 runs allowed. Throws Right
Friend – 1.2 innings, 0 hits 0 runs allowed. Throws Right
Ramirez – 2 innings, 1 hit 0 runs allowed. Throws Right
Stutes – 1 inning, 3 hits 1 run allowed. Throws Right

May 17th: 8-7 Win

Martin – 7 innings, 8 hits 2 runs allowed. Throws Right
Savery – .1 innings, 4 hits 5 runs allowed. Throws Left
Stutes – 1.2 innings, 0 hits 0 runs allowed. Throws Right

It seems that Norfolk can hit lefties well. In fact Joe Savery got pulled offshore twice by the Tide. Leaving out Cloyd’s start, the Lefties allowed 23 runs to the Righties 3 runs allowed. (Cloyd makes it 10 for the right handers)

On the North side of the mound, Friend and Stutes looked pretty good.

This should be an interesting series starting tonight and continuing throughout the weekend. The Pigs are coming off a 3-1 series win over Rochester and enjoyed a day off yesterday.

They took advantage of the off day to help out IronPig’s Charities. I have seen some photos out there of their participation in the 6th annual Hackers & Homes golf tournament to benefit IronPig’s Charities. I had attended this event for 3 of those years and only saw one other member of the team participate. (Greg Gross in 2009) Hats off to this year’s crew who came out to help out at this quality event!

Norfolk is coming off a split series with Durham. All four games were decided by one run with a day off on Monday. Expect them to not give the Pigs any room for error.

It’ll be fun for sure.

OinK!

Home Base Oklahoma City Tornado Relief

Oklahoma natives Josh and Ashleigh Fields are reaching out to the Lehigh Valley to help out their home state following the disastrous tornado a few days ago.

fields family

Please check this out and help if you are able to.

Link to their site

Oklahoma is our HOME BASE. We are proud Okies, currently living in Allentown, Pennsylvania while my husband Josh plays professional baseball for the Phillies Triple-A team, the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs. It’s so painful to see our friends, family, and community back home going through such a horrific time, while we sit helplessly in front of the national news outlets. We are now reaching out to not only our baseball community, but anyone else looking for a way to help these people in their time of need.

The tornado on May 20th wreaked havoc on the small community of Moore, OK and with your help- baseball fan or not- we can assist the victims of this tragedy. Any funds raised by this page go directly to victims and local organizations to help support those affected by this natural disaster. With your generosity we can help the Moore citizens begin to recover from this tragedy. Any donation, small or large, is incredibly appreciated. Thank you for your support and please keep the people of Moore in your thoughts and prayers.

—————————————————————————————-

If sending monetary donations isn’t possible for you right now, or you would like to help a different way, Tyler and Ashley Henson (also Okies with the Phillies organization) are collecting clothes and giftcards for 2 families whose lives were turned-upside down and lost everything on Monday. They are requesting 2t-3t girls clothes, 3t boys clothes, and 6-9 month boys clothes; size XL comfy clothes for the mom who just had surgery; and size large for both fathers. Target, Walmart, and gas gift cards would also be greatly appreciated.

They will be delivered directly to the families if sent to:
Jessica Scott
2203 E. Will Rogers Rd.
Stillwater, OK 74075

The man in the photo above carrying the sweet little baby also lost his home and all his belongings. They are in need of size 6-12 month baby clothes, size 2/small women’s clothes, and Target and Wal-Mart giftcards. Please send to:

Joey Wallace
11225 Greenbriar Chase
Oklahoma City, OK 73170

And lastly,
THANK YOU.

Tri for Inclusion – June 29 – Go Team Jared!

tri for inclusion

Tri for Inclusion at Parkland High School on June 29, 2013 at 8:30 am

Mikayla’s Voice Tri for Inclusion is much more than a race. It is a priceless opportunity for all children and young adults and an important message for our community. Kids of all abilities have the opportunity to compete side-by-side and together in something they had likely not dreamed possible or ever planned to do. Kids are able to sign up to compete in the swim, bike and run ~ or just one event as part of a relay team. Their efforts show our entire community that there is always a way to include everyone in everything.

If you’ve been to Coca-Cola Park recently you may have seen a video with Lindsey and Morris who have joined Team Jared and mikaylasvoice.org to raise money for this meaningful event.

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and then talking to Jared on a couple of occasions and in 2010 he was included in an IronPigs’ team set as the All-Star Kid.

Jared

While contemplating this post I arrived at the conclusion that it would be impossible to type the words explaining how Jared and his family have affected my life as a parent and a human being in the few times I’ve had the pleasure to see him.

You see Jared is one of the most amazing people I have met – ever.

Through all the adversity he’s always wearing his patented ‘Jared smile’.  Here’s a young man who has experienced what most of us can’t imagine, yet he makes sure less fortunate kids receive Christmas presents – his presents!  Jared is truly an awe-inspiring kid with equally amazing parents.

This past Sunday afternoon I found myself at Coca-Cola Park in front of a television with Jared (smiling of course) and his family watching a wonderful Service Electric piece detailing how Lindsey Knupp and Morris Morioka of The Lehigh Valley IronPigs are not only participating in the Tri for Inclusion but are also raising funds for this great cause.

Whichever IronPig employee raises the most for charity gets to ‘smush’ a pie in the other’s face and that itself may just be (almost) priceless but not nearly as much as witnessing the expressions of joy this event will bring to all the participants.

So, why not take some of that beer money or put that new golf club purchase on hold and give a couple bucks to help make sure that no child is left out of this experience for any reason. It’s something they will certainly cherish forever.

For donations to Team Morris – click here.

For further information about the Tri for Inclusion – click here.

Kudos to the IronPigs – especially Lindsey and Morris!

Thanks to Mikayla’s Voice for all the great work they do.

Most of all, thank you Jared for touching not only mine but countless other’s lives with your unyielding positivity and compassion for others!

Go Team Jared!!
