Bunning & Bobbleheads – Reading Stepping Up!

That Baseball Team Out in Reading is charging hard into the 2014 season announcing today a “Jim Bunning Day” right after a Ryne Sandberg bobblehead day!

The Sandberg bobblehead is being billed as “the first in franchise history,” although the IronPigs had one a few years back.. but I’ll give it to them. First in their New Named Franchise, I suppose… Either way, Reading fans will have a great year of promotions this season!

From That Baseball Team out in Reading:

Promo Preview: Jim Bunning to be Celebrated on June 12

Night to feature Bunning appearance, bobblehead giveaway, and Reading Baseball Hall of Fame induction

On February 13th, the Reading Fightin Phils will announce their full promotional schedule for the 2014 season in conjunction with the first day of individual ticket sales. Opening Night, the Cowboy Monkey Rodeo, Human Cannonball, John Kruk Garden Gnome, and Ryne Sandberg Bobblehead have already been announced. Between now and then, the Fightins will preview some highlights of the schedule.

Baseball Hall of Famer and Phillies great Senator Jim Bunning will be making his return to Baseballtown on Thursday, June 12 at 7:05 p.m. when the Reading Fightin Phils host a 50th Anniversary of Jim Bunning’s Perfect Game & Reading Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The night will also feature a Jim Bunning Bobblehead giveaway to the first 2,500 adults compliments of Van Bennett Food Co.

In addition to being in attendance, Bunning will also be on hand for a free autograph session for all fans.

Known for his illustrious 17-year MLB career, Bunning spent a season in Baseballtown a year after retired when he managed the Reading Phillies in 1972. His squad, who featured future major leaguers Jim Essian, Mac Scarce, and Bob Beall, went 70-69 in the Eastern League.

A nine-time all-star selection, Bunning became the seventh pitcher in MLB history to throw a perfect game on June 21, 1964, against the New York Mets. At the time, the historical game was the first perfect game thrown in the National League in 84 years. He is also one of just seven pitchers in MLB history to hold the distinction of throwing both a perfect game and no-hitter.

Over his Hall of Fame career, Bunning went 224-184 with a 3.27 ERA in 591 games. He struck out 2,855 batters, ranking second all-time at the time of his retirement behind Walter Johnson.

After his baseball days, Bunning turned his focus to public service and was elected to the city council of Fort Thomas, Kentucky in 1977. Nine years later, Bunning was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives where he spent 12 years in congress before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1999. He served two terms before stepping down in 2011.

Tickets for this and the rest of the 2014 slate of games go on sale February 13th online at Fightins.com, by phone at 610-370-BALL, or by stopping at the Fightin Phils Box Office at FirstEnergy Stadium.

See, I can copy/paste press releases too… 😉

Who Wore It Best? @IronPigs Number 8

Here’s one:  should coaches be eligible?  I say sure.

Players will be eligible only once, even if they wore multiple numbers during their IronPigs tenure.  Rehab players not normally eligible but will be considered if other choices aren’t available.

Go Pigs!

Gnewest Gnome Giveaway Gnews!

One of my all time favorite Phillies is John Kruk and That Baseball Team out in Reading will be honoring him with a garden gnome giveaway this season!

Promo Preview: Fightins to Honor Kruk as Next Gnome

Garden gnome of Phillies legend to be given out on June 30th

On February 13th, the Reading Fightin Phils will announce their full promotional schedule for the 2014 season in conjunction with the first day of individual ticket sales. Opening Night, the Cowboy Monkey Rodeo, and the Human Cannonball have already been announced. Between now and then, the Fightins will preview some highlights of the schedule.

On June 30th, Philadelphia Phillies legend and former Reading hitting coach John Kruk will become the latest figure to be immortalized in Baseballtown lore as a garden gnome when the Reading Fightin Phils give out a John Kruk Garden Gnome to the first 2,500 adults 15 and over thanks to Metro Bank.

The night also features the 14th Annual Chili Festival with Free Chili starting at 5:00 p.m. in Tompkins VIST Bank Plaza.

Kruk will become the fourth Reading legend to be featured as a Garden Gnome, following in the footsteps of Ryan Howard (2010-11), Cole Hamels (2011), Vance Worley (2012), and Carlos Ruiz (2013).

While known primarily for his career in Philadelphia from 1989 to 1994, Kruk spent time in Baseballtown on two instances. In 1994, the first baseman made a major league rehab in Reading for three games. Seven years later, Kruk joined the Reading coaching staff as the hitting coach under manager Gary Varsho.

After his coaching career, Kruk began a career in broadcasting with Fox Sports Network and in 2004, he joined ESPN as an analyst on Baseball Tonight.

A three-time all-star, Kruk played in the majors for 10 seasons and finished his career with a .300 batting average and 100 home runs. He was also part of the Phillies 1993 National League Championship team.

Tickets for this and the rest of the 2014 slate of games go on sale February 13th online at Fightins.com, by phone at 610-370-BALL, or by stopping at the Fightin Phils Box Office at FirstEnergy Stadium.

What if Baseball was Scored Like the Olympics…

The winter Olympics. I like one event. Curling. What can I say…

What never fails is from 6:00am to 11:59pm each broadcast day all I see is Figure Skating and X games stuff. Not for me. The curling events that I enjoy so much usually end up on ESPN the Ocho at 3:00am. I like curling as it is a scored event. Rules, regulations.. nothing subjective. Your stone is either closer to the middle or it’s not. Many Olympic events are “judged.”

Could you imagine if baseball was scored with judges rather than by the current rules?

Base hits would be given an associated stat value considering strength, technique, distance. The old adage, “They’re all line drives in the scorebook,” would no longer apply.

Runners could be ordered back to a previous base for improper baserunning.

Home runs would only score as many runs as the batter’s performance would allow. Line drive vs. Fly ball, Power alley vs. Pull side vs. Opposite field. Just clears the wall vs. Smashes through Ed’s Corvette windshield in the upper parking lot.

Pitchers could attain extra points for improved mechanics and form. Did he dip his elbow? Extra points for a sidearm toss. Swinging strike or Looking? Those backwards K’s could be counted twice.

Celebrations would come into consideration as a new stat category. Dance’s would be timed and judged on content, theme, music and execution.

Final scores would be assessed by a panel of judges.

olympic-scoring

Using judges to score contests make it subjective and when it comes to an event where countries compete against each other it becomes political, opening the door for unjust bias. I just don’t enjoy it.

Now I understand that umpires and referees can make mistakes. You could make the case that balls and strikes are subjective to an umpire but in that case the rules are concrete. It’s less about personal opinion and more about capability of that specific umpire.

Is it April yet?

Where are the 2013 IronPigs Now?

The 2013 IronPig’s season seems like yesterday as much as it feels like 5 years ago. With all this snow I decided to stay in and do a bit of research for you all. Like all minor league teams, we see players come and go each year. I did my best to track down everyone from the 2013 IronPig roster to include rehab assignments and short term additions. I used the IronPig’s end of year cumulative roster and internet resources to locate these guys and Cheryl Pursell’s massive photo archive to refresh our memory on what they looked like. Hope you enjoy and if you spot any errors or hear of any updates I may have missed please let us know in comments.

Phillies Fans Not Respecting the Ryne Sandberg Effect

Sandberg getting ejected - Heather Mastropieri

Sandberg Ejected, and Ejecting. Photo: Heather Mastropieri

With Pitchers and Catchers about to report to Spring Training, this is the time in the season when hope is the highest.  Even so, many Phillies fans about the interwebs are rightfully concerned about the status of their team.  It’s an aging roster which will need good health first and foremost to compete this season.  Second, while they don’t necessarily need resurgent seasons from some of the veterans, they do need competent play.  This includes the pitchers, of course, where some questions need to be answered and some young bullpen arms need to realize their potential.

What I don’t hear anyone talking about (yet) is the Ryne Sandberg effect.  Mr. Sandberg heads to Spring Training ready to begin the season as a Major League manager for the first time.  His team was 20-22 after he took over at the end of last season, using a lineup which often resembled the IronPigs.

This is not to disparage Charlie Manuel who was 53-67.  I think Charlie should be in the Hall of Fame as a manager.  This is not to claim that Ryne Sandberg will be a good manager simply because he’s a Hall of Fame Player.  This is to reflect on the fact that he will make more difference than folks think this season.  Sandberg was 155-132 for the IronPigs over two seasons for a team that had never even made it to .500 before.  He was 439-409 over six seasons as a Minor League manager–where winning “doesn’t matter.”  Now it matters.

They say a manager may be worth only 1-3 wins per season based on managerial decisions:  lineups, pitching changes, and the like.  It’s the players who hit.  It’s the players who field.  It’s the players who pitch.  The old group in Philadelphia this season is seen as lacking.  However, I believe the tone Mr. Sandberg will set, plus the leadership he’ll provide, will help his players–veterans and youngsters alike–play better than folks expect.

Yes, they’ll still need to stay healthy.

But I’m surprised no one is talking about this.

Yet.

(They will.)

Just wait until he ejects his first umpire.

Fan Free Agency Notes 2-8-14

It’s still early but the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks have jumped out with a commanding lead in the Noise Nation Free agency market.

Steelhawk's 2014 game balls.

Steelhawk’s 2014 game balls.

That’s right. The Noise Nation logo on their official game ball!

In other news…

That baseball team out in Reading took a move forward with the following:

“Baseballtown will once again blast off in 2014 when the Human Cannonball, David “The Bullet” Smith, returns to FirstEnergy Stadium on Friday, August 8th thanks to All Star Distributing. For nearly two decades, Smith has been electrifying crowds as a human cannonball. He has performed over 500 cannon shots around the globe. As part of his death-defying feat on August 8th, Smith will project himself over 150 feet out of his world-famous 35-foot-long cannon directly from centerfield to home plate.”

Human Cannonball! Oh yeah! That’s a good start Reading!

Reading also announced their rescheduled Winter Charity banquet:

The Reading Fightin Phils, Double-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, will kick off Fightin Phils Opening Week on Monday, March 31st when they hold the Meet the Fightins Banquet at the Reading Crowne Plaza. The banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m. with doors opening at 5:30 p.m.

The season-debuting banquet will feature the introduction of the entire 2014 Fightins Opening Night roster, including manager Dusty Wathan and his coaching staff. Wathan, pitching coach David Lundquist, and hitting coach Rob Ducey will take part of a question-and-answer session during the dinner.

Fans will have the first opportunity to meet the team through an autograph session with the entire team and staff. There will also be a raffle and silent auction of various sports collectibles and memorabilia.

The kickoff event will also double as the King of Baseballtown Banquet, which was postponed from its original date in January.

2014 King of Baseballtown Charlie Flannery will also be crowned at the event. The legendary coach of the Gregg Post American Legion team and Reading Hot Stovers Banquet Chairman will be the 12th king crowned by Baseballtown Charities.

Tickets for the King of Baseballtown Banquet cost $65 for adults and $25 for kids and are available now online at Fightins.com, by phone at 610-370-BALL, or by visiting the Fightins Ticket Office located at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Ticketholders from the postponed January event will be admitted with their original ticket.

The entire team available for autographs! Nice!

Also happening this week, the Noise Nation has entered negotiations to film promotional spots with an undisclosed Roller Derby team here in the Valley. Details are sketchy but could be the beginning of solidifying the 2014 season coverage.

A source also reported that the good folks up at Scranton Wilkes Barre have been in touch with the Noise Nation. Stay tuned for more details on this…
