Taking Shape: Changes to Field and Rosters for @IronPigs

This week brought changes to the playing surface as well as player status.  Here are some links and updates:

The IronPigs had help this week in preparing the field for the 2014 season.  The field has to be ready on Monday, March 31 when the players arrive for Media Day and their first workout at Coca Cola Park.  They’ll most likely work out again Tuesday prior to the game in Reading that evening, 4/1/2014.  They may even get another workout in Wednesday before busing to Pawtucky for the season opener Thursday April 3.  The seating bowl doesn’t have to be ready until 3PM or so on Monday April 7, for the home opener.

I’m going to try to link to a couple interesting things I saw this week via The Morning Call and Channel 69 News.  I apologize if the links don’t work.  But first, let me propose a possible solution for the seating bowl.  If the seats haven’t melted themselves clear by the weekend of April 5 and 6, I think the IronPigs should activate the fans to help.  The ‘Pigs play at 1:05 each day that weekend (in the woods of Rhode Island.)  Put the game up on the big screen.  Give out free hot dogs and sodas.  Open up a bar or two for $1 drafts.  We’ll all bring shovels and ice picks and sham-wows and help out.  It’s the old “invite your friends over to help you move” (and you’d better have a case or two of beer on hand).  We’re the best fans in Minor League Baseball, there’s no reason we can’t lend a hand (you know, in exchange for some consideration–will also accept additional ballpark credit or Majestic Clubhouse Store gift cards).

Here’s a report from 69 News:

Baseball team undertakes a different kind of spring cleaning.

There’s a photo gallery of Coca Cola Park as it appeared on February 17 here from The Morning Call.

Here’s a link to a Jeff Schuler Morning Call story about the snow removal process, from Monday: HERE

There’s another Photo Gallery, from Thursday:  HERE

As you can see, they’ve brought in outside help.  It sounds like replacing the infield was in the plans all along.  Certainly, they’re under the gun to complete the project.  I wonder if there’s a somewhat silver lining:  With new sod due to arrive for the infield, at least it will be healthy and green (assuming proper installation and conditions).  The craziness of the weather might not allow the “chemical process” we leaned about last Spring to have its full, desired effect.  I guess we’ll know when we compare the infield and outfield.  I did not hear them say that the outfield would be replaced as well.

——-

Meanwhile, in Clearwater, some players have been shifted around a bit now that the Minor League camp is in full swing. Yesterday morning, outfielders Kelly Dugan and Aaron Altherr were reassigned to minor league camp.  I expect both to be with Reading to start the season.  While we’re talking Reading OF:  Cameron Perkins is in the Reading “group 2” in minor league camp.  It’s certainly no guarantee that he’ll be in Reading, but he has the opportunity.  Meanwhile, Anthony Hewitt came up lame running for first yesterday (one report said hamstring, another ankle) during an intra-squad scrimmage–that may impact Reading’s OF to start as well.

Leandro Castro was reassigned too.  I expect him to be with the IronPigs.  After spending all season with us last year, the Phillies re-signed him to a minor league contract with an MLB invite.  I would think that means they like him enough to keep him around at AAA.  The fact that he got sent down so early in the process probably means that they want him to get more playing time, and that they know what they have with him at this point.

Catcher Sebastian Valle was reassigned as well.  As I’ve written, I expect him to open with Reading if he’s not part of a trade prior to the season.  His reassignment tends to confirm that.  I still expect Cameron Rupp and Lou Marson to be IronPigs, but keep an eye on Nieves–if he doesn’t play well he could find himself DFA’d if he gets out-played by Rupp and/or Marson.  However, I would think that’s unlikely.  You can always use extra catchers.

After yesterday’s game top pitching prospect Jesse Biddle was reassigned as well.  In his case, I don’t think it necessarily portends Reading or Lehigh Valley.  They likely have things for him to work on and want him getting regular time which he might not get in Major League camp.  It does mean he won’t be the one filling in for the “not injured but really tired” Cole Hamels  in the Phillies rotation right away.  (I have no problem with Cole–it’s the Phillies not being forthright about injuries that I question)

Relief pitchers Luis Garcia and Michael Stutes were optioned to minor league camp yesterday.  I know Luis hasn’t had the success in MLB Spring Training games, but I haven’t seen him pitch.  As long as he’s throwing hard and not locating, the potential is there–expect him to be part of the Lehigh Valley bull pen while he works on it.

Michael Stutes first appeared with the IronPigs in 2011.  He was a fast-rising relief prospect who went on to pitch well in Philly at the age of 24.  2012 was almost a “lost” season for Michael as he rehabbed and came back from injury.  He struggled a bit last season, too, as he pitched for both the IronPigs and the Phillies.  There are now worries about Stutes’ shoulder again, and his fastball velocity which used to be around 95 now struggles to even hit 90.  I would hope that Stutes can get stronger and perhaps alter some pitching strategy to continue to compete.  However, DL time, surgery, rest, release from the team…it’s all on the table right now.  He almost certainly won’t be on the Phillies’ opening day roster, and I don’t think he’s a lock to be an IronPig on opening day either.  It bears watching.  He was a favorite of mine to watch in 2011, and I wish him well.

Coming this week:

Tuesday:  Season Ticket packages will be ready to pick up at the Coca Cola Park ticket office starting at 10AM.  Check back with the Horn and Bell on Tuesday for further details.

Also Tuesday:  The Phillies’ minor leaguers begin their “games” with a matchup versus the Toronto franchise:  AAA (group 1) and AA (group 2) in Clearwater, and A+ (group 3) and A (group 4) in Dunedin.

And:  IronPigs radio personalities Matt Provence and Jon Schaeffer will have the radio call for the Phillies’ game in Orlando versus Atlanta. Listen via MLB.com.

Wednesday: Our own Cheryl Pursell will be in Clearwater.  We wish her safe travel, and look forward to reports on Twitter (@CherylPursell) and via the IronPigs media feed.  We’ll post anything she sends us, right here on the Horn and Bell Blog.

And:  Provence and Schaeffer again on the call (radio) as the Phillies visit the Orioles in Sarasota.  Also MLB.com I believe.

Stay tuned, it’s starting to get good!

Tales From the PorkSide – Those Behind the @IronPigs Uniform Change

The IronPig’s new uniforms have been a hot topic and we set off to find out more. Prompted by DiPro’s missing coat we can only speculate that answers to our questions, and possibly DiPro’s coat can be found… In the PorkSide!

IronPigs live in the sunlit world of what they believe to be Coca Cola Park. But…there is, unseen by most, an underworld, a place that is just as real, but not as brightly lit… a PorkSide.

ThePorksideTitle

This is the second time we have opened the porthole to the IronPig’s underworld and we still have to be very careful. Not sure what we’ll find here and shocking news can be just as harsh as being struck by a line drive up in the Lighted side of Coca Cola Park.

There seems to be a dim light shining in the back of this tunnel. Let’s check it out. OW! Just hit my head on something! What is that? It’s a coat rack.. an empty coat rack. Ok, the PorkSide is just taunting us now. Come on, that light is peaking my curiosity.

We stumble slowly along until we find this sign:

porkside_tweet

It looks like a… Tweet. A Twitter message! We have our first clue! We have a website link! This is starting to get heavy… should we proceed?

Of course we are! Let’s do this!

Yeah, this is a fancy website. All the Pig’s new gear showcased in a very… dark… manner. There’s got to be more. If you want to see for yourself, click that sign to see the website.

My eye is drawn to the lower right portion of the page. Site Credits. Perhaps we’ll find something there…

porkside_site_credits

Ah Ha! More answers and two more links to follow… the first sign was so clear with only one path. Now we have to make a choice. Which do we choose? Which leads us to what we are looking for and which leads us to our doom? Which leads us to the resting place of DiPro’s missing coat?

I’m going with the first link.

Wow! This website looks great! We made a good choice. Bright colors and smiling faces!

Jason & Casey

The two of us grew up in San Diego, and have been best friends since kindergarten. As kids, we loved telling stories and bringing creative ideas to life.

Once in college, we started designing high school logos out of our dorm rooms. We then sent letters to 150 Minor League Baseball teams, and only one got back to us: the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx. They told us, “If we like it, we’ll buy it.” That summer we set out with the same goal we have today: Doing whatever it takes to make teams famous.

Since then, we’ve dreamed up all kinds of team names, mascots, and looks, including top selling logos for the Richmond Flying Squirrels and Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. Because we love trying things never been done before, we invented the first glow-in-the-dark on-field baseball cap for the Casper Ghosts, and the first on-field Rally Cap design for the Altoona Curve.

Today we’re bringing the same ‘can-do’ attitude and whimsical approach to storytelling, not just to minor league clubs, but major league teams as well. We recently reimagined the look and feel for America’s oldest baseball club, the Cincinnati Reds, and you can expect major league experience too.

So these guys create baseball logos. Quite a few familiar faces here. Our beloved Pig’s logo, the Pig’s cousins the Flying Squirrels logos among many more. Is this exactly what we are looking for? Not sure yet but we’ll keep looking.

We trace our steps back and I’m thankful Kram Jr. left a trail of Peanut Chews for us to follow back to the original sign.

Now on to that second link

Another sign!

porkside_401

Artists! Strategists! Code monkeys! Oh my!

401! creative

Consumers and businesses are connected more than ever before. We are in an age of transparency, and wherever you are, your customers will find you. But are you ready to be found? Will your website match your marketing materials? Do your social media accounts have appropriate content and graphics? Is your identity consistent across all digital outlets? It’s never been as important as it is today, and as consumers become more educated, they become more discerning.

That’s where 4O1! Creative comes in – with our multitude of services, we can help you with a consistent branding strategy, beef up your marketing collateral from business cards to brochures, and design and develop a best-in-class website to rival players at the top of your industry.

So we now know who was truly behind the IronPig Uniform changes. We know where the new uniforms for the Majestic Clubhouse store were hidden pre press conference and we know where the Smell The Change website had been hiding all week. All in.. The PorkSide!

Still have not located DiPro’s coat.

dipro_missing_coat

That’s all I’m willing to stay in the PorkSide today. Stay tuned for high quality Cheryl Pursell video from the IronPig’s Press conference today!

The Porkide is always there, waiting for us to enter – waiting to enter us. Until next time, try to enjoy the daylight.

What You Can Do NOW to Get Ready for the 2014 @IronPigs Season

Oh, so you’re cold.  You’re sitting around lamenting the snow.  And, you’re complaining about the amount of time until pitchers and catchers report.  All you  can do is grouse and whine about the weeks and months until IronPigs opening day (on Monday April 7 at 5:05PM).

Reppin' the Pigs in the Snow Photo: Kram

Reppin’ the Pigs in the Snow Photo: Kram

Well, we’re sick of hearing about it.  OK, so we’re sick of participating in it, too. 😉  Here in Kram’s Korner, we’ve been thinking of things to do to bide the time until opening day, and make sure we’re ready to hit the ground running when April 7 rolls around. Think about undertaking some of these eleven things while you wait:

  1. Check Your Schedule     Note that 5:05PM start time for opening day.  Make sure you clear your schedule to get there in time.  I still haven’t heard an answer as to why they did that, but I suppose it’s a school night and it’ll be cold–so why not get it out of the way early?  It does create a little bit of overlap with the Phillies home opener–I’m not sure if that’s on purpose or merely coincidence.  Anywho, mark your schedule for all of the home games in your plan.  Download the iCal or CSV version once it becomes available (editor’s note: they tell us it will be out before March 1).  Dig out those magnet schedules we received late last season and position them strategically about your home and office.  Save online links on your computer for not just the IronPigs, but the Phillies, Reading, Scranton, and any other stadiums you might like to visit during the season, so that you can reference and cross-reference quickly.  If you already have tickets to games elsewhere–a Reading package or a Philadelphia package for example–make sure those games are on your calendar as well.  Remember the 222 game will likely be played in Reading this season on Tuesday April 1, and will likely start early, perhaps 6:05PM.  Make a note of it!  Mark your calendar for March 1:  It’s National Pig Day.  Single-game tickets will go on sale then for non-season ticket holders.  The preliminary promo schedule should be coming out any day–we’ll report on it here, and you can mark your calendar for the promos that are most important to you.
  2. Do Your Taxes   Look, it’s a drag I know.  Just get that stuff out of the way so that when the IronPigs start up you’re not still spending time on it in early April.  Plus, if you’re due a return, you’ll have some extra cash to spend….
  3. Get New Glasses or Contact Lenses     Not a self-serving idea as some may think.  It’s hard enough to see that little white ball.  Good vision is important in order to enjoy live baseball.
  4. Get an MLB.TV Package for Spring Training Games    It doesn’t look like they have the specific Spring Training package available yet, so unless you want to pony up for the entire off-season package, you might have to wait a bit.  I found this useful and handy last season for taking in S/T games every afternoon at the office.  Also, when it gets closer, consider the MiLB.TV package as well.  The IronPigs open on the road, and unless you’re thinking of driving to Pawtucky on April 3 (don’t tempt me–the woods in Rhode Island beckon…) you might want to catch some early season away games via that package.  The quality gets better every year, and it’s easier and easier with new technology to put it up on a bigger screen if you don’t want to watch on your computer.  Last year I could watch via the iPhone app as well!  For home games you’ll need Service Electric.  Look in to that, too, if you need to.
  5. Buy Tickets.  Buy More Tickets.  Buy Other Tickets:     If you’re thinking about a season ticket plan, there’s no better time than now.  Read about why:  here .  Add a complimentary plan if you need.  Or, look forward to advance sales of single game tickets coming some time in February for IronPigs Season Ticket Holders.  Oh, and there are other baseball teams too (gasp!).  Pick up some Phillies tickets or Reading or for the away games in Moosic.  Go crazy.  The sooner you get them, the better the seats will be and you won’t get shut out, if, say, Derek Jeter suddenly schedules a rehab in Moosic…
  6. Get Your Vehicle Ready:     I mean, don’t bother washing it yet or anything…  But get ready to stash an extra blanket, and extra sweatshirt perhaps some sunglasses or an extra hat in there for game days.  Any rain gear for game days should be ready to go–umbrellas, ponchos and the like.  Make sure you’ve get your portable radio in there, with fresh batteries and operational ear buds if applicable.  If you’re partial to tailgating, as I am, have your tailgating kit ready to go:  I keep a box with tailgating supplies (napkins, plates, cups, utensils, grill tools, plastic bags, extra propane, a small football, etc.) ready to go at all times.
  7. Get a Seat Cushion:   Maybe you don’t sit in a seat, preferring to stand?  Maybe the padding on the club level seats is enough for you?  Maybe you don’t plan to leave the club to begin with, planning for a seat at the nice warm bar?  But for the rest of us, staying warm is of major concern during the first month of the season, and we’re not getting any younger.  Years ago my parents bought me these heated seat cushions.  I never thought much of them until the past couple IronPigs seasons.  Now, they’re crucial early season gear.  There might be a couple different varieties available now, but an example is:  here
  8. Get Some Warm Clothes:   OK, this may seem obvious.  But layering is crucial for those early-season games, so I’m thinking of picking up some Under Armor “Cold Gear” style stuff.  The players wear it and my kids wear it for their cold-weather sporting events.  Why can’t I wear it as a spectator?  We all can! Like here
  9. Pick Up Your Tickets:   This might seem obvious, too.  We’ll let you know when they’re available–usually around the middle of March.  However, the last thing you want is to rush to the stadium in time for that 5PM start on opening day and have to stand in line to pick up your tickets or ticket package.  Make sure you get it ahead of time!
  10. Read the Roster Posts So That You’ll Know the Players:   Here at the award-winning Horn and Bell Blog, we’ll try to keep you apprised of the players battling for roster spots for the IronPigs.  If you familiarize yourself with the names and the players, it’ll make the early season games that much more interesting!  Go Pigs!
  11. Follow Players and Staff on Twitter So That You’ll Know All The Inside Scoop:   Once you’ve got a handle on the potential players, go give them a follow on Twitter to get to know them a bit better.  Also consider following some of the IronPigs Twitter feeds for news and info about upcoming season.

…….

In these 11 steps you’ll find yourself more ready than ever for the 2014 season.  And it will help pass the time.  Everybody wins!

Shopping for Cold Gear,
