Holy Kratz!

The big team made another roster move today optioning Erik Kratz (C) to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. I’m sure Erik wanted to back-up the Phils and he’s liable to get that chance again this year. Regardless, we’re glad to have last year’s AAA All-Star “backstop” returning.

Holy Kratz what a pic! (Erik Kratz poses with Noise Nation members Jason DiPro, Sara Haydt, Jay Gatsby and Dan Kehl)

Virginia is For Lovers

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and the Richmond Flying Squirrels (AA SF Giants) led by IronPigs President Chuck Domino (who also happens to be the Squirrels Chief Executive Manager) are doing just that by patterning their new stadium experience after that of Coca-Cola Park.  Mr. Domino certainly has the track-record to pull the whole thing off.  Providing of course he can garner the same first-class staff the IronPigs have.  It shouldn’t be too difficult – after all – Virginia is For Lovers!

Good luck Chuck and perhaps one day we’ll bring the Noise Nation bus on down to Squirreltown!

Proposed Richmond Flying Squirrels stadium modeled after Pa. ballpark

By: MICHAEL MARTZ | Richmond Times-Dispatch
Published: March 27, 2012

The stadium that the Richmond Flying Squirrels want to build on North Boulevard has been game-tested in Allentown, Pa., and it appears to be a winner.

The Lehigh Valley Ironpigs have drawn more than 2.5 million fans to Coca-Cola Park since its opening in 2008, setting attendance records for all of Minor League Baseball for the past two seasons.

Allentown, with the fourth-smallest market in Triple-A baseball, hadn’t had a professionally affiliated baseball team for almost 50 years until the Ironpigs came to town the same year that the Richmond Braves played their last game at The Diamond.

Richmond Flying Squirrels Proposed Stadium

“The new stadium and new team have improved our quality-of-life quotient by about 300 percent,” said T. Anthony Ianelli, president and CEO of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce. “It’s had a phenomenal impact on the community.”

Coca-Cola Park is the model for the unnamed stadium that the Flying Squirrels are pitching to people in the Richmond area through a conceptual rendering of a ballpark where no one loses sight of the game on the field.

“It has the kind of design feel we’re going for — a lot of openness,” said Todd Parnell, chief operating officer for the Squirrels, a San Francisco Giants affiliate in the Double-A Eastern League.

Squirrels Chief Executive Manager Chuck Domino also is the president of the Ironpigs, a Philadelphia Phillies affiliate in the Triple-A International League.

“It’s hard to say the ballpark brings people here,” Domino said. “It’s the experience people have at the ballpark.”

In Allentown, the experience has been positive, said Mayor Ed Pawlowski. “You would think you are looking at a high-definition TV,” he said of the view of the game from throughout the park. Pawlowski thinks the stadium would have had a greater economic benefit if it had been in the heart of the city instead of the outskirts — similar to the debate over where to play ball in Richmond. In fact, Allentown is building a $150 million arena complex downtown for the Philadelphia Flyers minor league hockey franchise.

But the mayor is happy with the experience the Ironpigs give fans at Coca-Cola Park, much as fans have warmed to the Squirrels in their first two seasons at The Diamond.

“They’ve done a really good job in giving us a product that is really attractive to families,” Pawlowski said.

While the experience is similar to what the Squirrels plan at the proposed ballpark, the stadiums wouldn’t look exactly the same.

The brick façade of the proposed stadium along North Boulevard has a similar look to Oriole Park at Baltimore’s Camden Yards, which set the standard for new stadiums with an old-time feel when it opened 20 years ago.

“Everybody felt Richmond would be Richmond brick,” Domino said.

Not coincidentally, Populous, the Kansas City, Mo.-based company that is designing the Squirrels’ proposed nest, is a spinoff of HOK Group, which designed the Orioles’ stadium.

The design compresses the two levels of seating at The Diamond into one level of 6,000 seats close to the field and down from the street level instead of up.

Unlike The Diamond, the Squirrels’ stadium would put spectators all the way around the field — along a grass berm where people can pitch their blankets beyond the outfield; in a picnic area in the right-field corner, where a circular bar also would be perched on the outfield wall; and along an open-air concourse where people could buy a hot dog and still see the field.

Together, these features would add about 3,000 seats to the ballpark, while increasing the number of suites from 15 to 20 and doubling the number of concession stands from 25 to 50. The design is meant to be easier for fans, including people with physical disabilities.

The stadium also is designed to be wired — from a scoreboard that would be capable of showing instant replays, videos or live shots around the ballpark, to the television sets that would show the games throughout the concourse.

“The game will never leave you,” Parnell said.

For the players, including those on Virginia Commonwealth University’s baseball squad, the design includes extensive locker room and training facilities beneath the concourse.

The design is based on a $50 million stadium, which is about what Lehigh Valley paid for Coca-Cola Park four years ago with a combination of funding from Lehigh County, the Ironpigs and the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

“I happen to believe it is worth the investment,” said Ianelli, who said the stadium has brought “a little bit of swagger” to Lehigh Valley.

“I hate to be a typical Chamber of Commerce Pollyanna guy,” he said, “but everything they said they’d deliver they’ve delivered.”

Hawks and Pigs and Mikeys – Oh My!

(The good stuff is around the 2:45 mark and Dan there is a re-match in the future).

I began with that video because while this post is primarily about the Noise Nation rocking Stabler Arena at the LV Steelhawks football game, the evening surprisingly ended with an IronPigs connection.

Before kick-off the energy was high at Stabler with the Engineer’s upset of  the Blue Devils the previous evening and some trash talking by the ‘cross-town’ rival Reading Express fans who were a great bunch. We look forward to our next encounter with them.

In the end, The Steelhawks (2-2) put the Express (0-3) back on the train south by a score of 86-53 in an action packed thriller.

The scoring tirade was led by QB Bryan Randall who was starting in his first game since joining the Steelhawks.  Randall completed 10 of 14 passes for 213 yards and five touchdowns, and also found the endzone on two rushing TDs.

Kutztown U’s own 6’4″ 340lb Chris Medina DL/OL recovered a fumble and  lumbered to what was a sure touchdown but wound up at the 1″ line for a first and goal.  I could hear Berman  yelling “he’s bumbling, stumbling…” I spoke to the big man after the game and he was diligently searching for an instant replay!

One of may favorite players, gentleman Jeff “whatcha talkin’ ’bout” Willis WR  6’3″ 190 lbs grabbed 4 rec for 98 yards and 3 TD’s helping the Hawks to 351 yards of total offense (on a 50 yard field). The Hawks scored 11 TDs and it was clear Jeff was talkin’ touchdowns this evening. Great game Jeff!

As usual after a Steelhawks home game the celebration moved to Roosevelts’ 21st and with St. Patrick’s Day the place was bulging with revelers. It’s always a blast hanging with the Steelhawks family and having the players thank us personally for bringing the NOISE.

As the night drew to a close, Jimmy T, Sara and myself were making our way out when a young man donning his best Windsor flat cap approached, stood in front of us and said “Hey I’m Mikey the V”!

Wait? What?

After a thoroughly enjoyable evening of LV Sports there we were suddenly talking to Mikey the V with whom The Nation has been on the air with many times but never had the pleasure to meet.  It was nice to hear Mikey’s appreciation for the Noise Nation’s dedication and support of the IronPigs.

As you may know Mikey the V is traveling west this summer to call play-by-play for the Southern Illinois Miners of the Independent Frontier League and we will surely miss him.

Best of luck to you Mikey and we will be calling Illinois which at the end of the day we may have to re-named IlliNOISE!

What a great night and there are only 18 days left until the IronPigs adventure of 2012 begins!

Go Hawks!

OinK On!

Elizabeth “Betty” Daniels 1939-2012

Elizabeth Betty Ann Daniels, 73 years, of Allentown, passed away February 23, 2012 at the home of her son in Schuylkill Haven. She was the widow of Harry F. Muggs Daniels. Born in Syracuse, NY, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and A. Elizabeth (Frye) Weller. She worked for the Iron Pigs as a sales clerk for the past four years. Prior to that, she worked for Lehigh Valley Hospital in data processing and as a tech aid. Betty was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Fogelsville for many years.

We all have fond memories of Betty and she put the DiPro on my first IP Jersey. Most of all we’ll remember Betty for her kindness and caring. One could instantly tell Betty took pride in her work and always brought a warm smile and friendly atmosphere to the Clubhouse Store.

We’ll miss you Betty!

Stadium Journey’s Top 100 of 2011

Stadium Journey, the online and print publication has released their Top 100 sporting venues of 2011 after considering 754 stadiums across the US.

Ranked #48 in the U.S. (click)

Parkview Field home of the Fort Wayne (Indiana) TinCaps was ranked as the #1 ballpark in all Minor League Baseball and our own Coca-Cola Park came in at 6th out of 10 on the Minor League list and 48th out of the overall top 100!

CCP finished just behind The Rose Bowl (46th) and outranked Heinz Field (60th), Citizens Bank Park (64th), and Yankee Stadium (79th)  as well.

The top 3 overall are:  Lucas Oil Stadium (Indianapolis Colts), Lambeau Field (Green Bay Packers), and Bryant-Denny Stadium (Alabama Crimson Tide).

Here is the list of Stadium Journey’s Top 10 Minor League Baseball venues
(click links for pictures and info)

  1. Parkview Field – Fort Wayne TinCaps – Fort Wayne, Indiana
  2. Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium – Montgomery Biscuits – Montgomery, Alabama
  3. BB&T Coastal Field – Myrtle Beach Pelicans – Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
  4. MCU Park – Brooklyn Cyclones – Brooklyn, New York
  5. Daniel S. Frawley Stadium – Wilmington Blue Rocks – Wilmington, Delaware
  6. Coca-Cola Park – Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs – Lehigh Valley, PA
  7. The Epicenter – Rancho Cucamonga Quakes – Rancho Cucamonga, California
  8. Arrowhead Credit Union Park – Inland Empire 66ers – San Bernadino, California
  9. Fifth Third Field – Dayton Dragons – Dayton, Ohio
  10. Appalachian Power Park – West Virginia Power – Charleston, West Virginia

While the top 5 appear to be acceptable venues with Parkview Field closest in design to CCP, I can’t see why the other 4 are ranked above Coca-Cola Park other than their downtown surroundings (Coney Island) or closeness to the beach*.

*Since I haven’t had the opportunity to personally visit any of the top 5, my (somewhat biased) opinion is confined to only pictures of those venues. Honestly though, BB&T Coastal Field resembles PNC Field before they started demolition!

Regardless of all that…

Congratulations to Coca-Cola Park for breaking the top 50 in Stadium Journey’s top 100 venues of 2011 across the entire U.S. in all sports both amateur and professional!

Go Pigs!

Rockies offer Jamie Moyer Minor League Contract

Jamie Moyer Bobblehead

Sellersville native and 2012 IronPig bobblehead recepient, 49 year old Jamie Moyer has been offered a Minor League Contract by theColorado Rockies with an invitation to spring training. {via MLB Trade Rumors}

Ironically, Jamie began his MLB career in 1986 with the Chicago Cubs debuting against “Lefty” Carlton and he garnered his first win. Moyer played for the Phillies from 2006-2010 winning a Championship with the Phils in 2008.

Jamie is only 1 of 8 pitchers to have made appearances in Major League games in 4 separate decades. On May 7, 2010, Moyer became the oldest player in Major League Baseball history (47 years, 170 days) to pitch a shutout.  Moyer also became the only MLB pitcher to throw a shutout in four different decades (80s, 90s, 2000s, and 2010s). Quite a résumé to say the least.

Hopefully Jamie will make a full recovery from his 2010 Tommy John surgery and perhaps make an MLB comeback. At the very least the Colorado Rockies can surely benefit from his wisdom.

Career Stats:

Record    267–204
ERA    4.24
SO    2,405

Good luck Jamie!

Red Robin Tiki Terrace – Open House

The IronPigs held a Tuesday afternoon open house at Coca Cola Park to showcase their new left field addition.

IronPigs GM Kurt Landes (click photos to enlarge)

Favorable weather has allowed construction crews to reach nearly 50% completion and roof thatching will begin soon. The Tiki Terrace’s additional seating will increase the official Park capacity to 10,100.

Tiki Terrace Construction

While the weather was far from tropical, General Manager Kurt Landes warmed the atmosphere with his description of the Tiki Terrace and Oasis complete with Palm Trees.

Mr. Landes also pointed out that the new Tiki Terrace will not interfere with regular park updates and stated “When you get in the elevators you won’t recognize them”.  The party porches will also be upgraded and other various touches around the park will be completed.

View from front row of over-hanging seating

The view from the front row of the overhanging seats has to be one of the most unique views in all of baseball and ‘The Dish’ is not opposed to bribery in order to get down there during game time. We will have to wait and see if Coca Cola Park will have its own future version of “Jeffrey Maier” as the ground rules have not yet been etched.

Following the blustery outdoor tour, the party moved inside to sample some new tropical themed menu items created by Executive Chef Jan Giejda. The Kahlua Chicken Skewers and the Pineapple Pork Skewers were quite tasty. The other interesting addition was Char Grilled Pierogies with a surprisingly great flavor. Click here for the Tiki Terrace Bar menu and here for the Tiki Terrace Bar Group Outing menu.

Pineapple Pork Skewers & Kahlua Chicken Skewers

Boneless Chicken Skewers, Grilled Steak Sliders and Handcrafted Burgers, previously available only at the FMO Painting Club Bar will make there way to the Tiki Terrace Bar Menu. I’ve had all of them and it’s great that everyone will now have the opportunity to enjoy these delectable Club Level favorites.

Great group seating is still available – be sure to visit the IronPigs Website  before it’s too late.

I was fortunate to steal some one-on-one with GM Kurt Landes’ and I must say that it was enjoyable both as a fan and as a blogger to hear his insight. It’s clear that the IronPigs organization will not rest on their laurels and we are fortunate to have an owner’s group and management team that will not allow seasoned fans to become jaded and still continue to bring new fans to the Park.

I also had the pleasure to meet Jeff Schuler of the Morning Call’s Hog Blog. View his great post here.

View of CF

The Voice of the IronPigs Matt Provence and Jon Schaeffer are keeping their play-by-play skills sharp this off-season. Matt called some Lafayette Men’s Soccer and Women’s Volleyball and is currently doing Basketball for the NJIT.  Jon is calling Seton Hall Basketball. Give ‘em a listen – it’s always entertaining.

Overall another great afternoon at Coca Cola Park – even in the cold!

Is it April yet?

Go Pigs!
