From The Desk of Decal: Meet The Clippers

It isn’t easy to determine who will be on the Columbus roster for the Governor’s Cup final since so many of their best players are no longer there.  Shelley Duncan, Jason Donald, Nick Hagadone, Luis Valbuena and Josh Judy are just a few that were called up to the Indians late in the season.   To replace them on the Columbus roster, many players were promoted from the AA Akron Aeros so the Ironpigs may have to borrow scouting reports from Reading.

The pitchers are young and very right hand dominant which could be good for all the left handed hitters on the Ironpigs.   The ones listed below are the most  likely candidates to be active for this series.

Eric Berger
, 25, LHP:  An 8th round draft pick in 2008, he pitched mostly for AA Akron in 2011, going 2-0 2.53.  He pitched in 11 games for Columbus, all in relief and was 0-1 with a 10.05 ERA.  In 14.1 innings he allowed 26 hits, walked 14 and recorded 20 strikeouts.   Jeff Larish homered off him in game 2 of a doubleheader on May 8.

Cory Burns, 23, RHP:  Drafted in the 8th round of the 2009 draft.  He spent the entire season as the closer for AA Akron. He recorded 35 Saves and was 2-5 with a 2.11 ERA.  In 59.2 innings he had 70 strikeouts and walked just 15 batters.

Kelvin De La Cruz,  23 LHP.   He pitched the entire 2011 season in AA with Akron going 5-6 with a 4.19 ERA.  In 86 innings he allowed just 70 hits but walked 57, so control appears to be an issue for him.  He struck out 95 batters and allowed just 3 home runs.

Paolo Espino, 24, RHP.  Paolo was a 10th round draft pick by the Indians in 2006.  He was 6-0 2.44 at Akron this year before moving up to Columbus where he went 2-1 3.43.  He pitched in 12 games for the Clippers, 5 of them as a starter.  On July 24 he pitched in relief against the Ironpigs and threw 2 innings, allowing 2 hits and an unearned run.

Corey Kluber, 25,  RHP.   Kluber is 25 and started 27 games for the Clippers in 2011.  His record was 7-11 5.56.  In 150.2 innings he allowed 19 homeruns and struck out 143 batters.  He averaged nearly a walk every 2 innings and allowed 153 hits.   He lost to the Ironpigs on July 25th.

Matt Langwell, 25,  RHP.  Matt was a 2008 11th round draft pick by the Indians.  He spent most of 2011 at Akron where he went 4-1 2.66 in 36 games, 1 of them as a starter.  He was 1-0 4.00 with Columbus and recorded 17 strikeouts in 18 innings.

Chen Lee,  24,  RHP.   Lee was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of Taiwan.  In 2009 he played for Chinese Taipei in the World Baseball Classic.  In 2011 he was 2-1 2.50 at Akron and 4-0 2.27 with 1 Save for the Clippers.  In 71.1 combined innings at AA & AAA, he recorded 99 strikeouts.

Joe Martinez,  28,  RHP.   Joe pitched in 35 games for Columbus in 2011, 16 of them as a starter.   The Indians acquired him from the Pirates for cash considerations in January, 2011.  His record this year was 8-9  4.04 and he allowed 136 hits in 118 innings pitched.  He lost to the Ironpigs on July 24th by a 4-2 score as Brandon Moss and Josh Barfield homered.

Zach McAllister, 23,  RHP.   McAllister was drafted by the Yankees and was traded to the Indians on August 20, 2010 for Austin Kearns.   He was 12-3 3.32 for the Clippers this year and is the scheduled starting pitcher for game 1 against the Ironpigs.  He pitched against the Ironpigs on July 23rd but was not involved in the decision.  He gave up 3 runs on 7 hits in 5 innings of work.  Rich Thompson led off the game with a home run and the Ironpigs won 4-3 in 10 innings.   Zach was the winning pitcher in game 1 of the opening round of the playoffs against the Durham Bulls throwing 6 scoreless innings in the 3-0 win.

Zach Putnam,  24,  RHP.   Putnam was a 5th round draft pick by the Indians in 2008.  He went 6-3 3.65 for the Clippers this year in 44 games, all in relief.  He recorded 9 Saves.  He had 68 strikeouts in 69 innings of work.

Jason Rice,  25,  RHP.   He was 4-5 3.69 with Pawtucket in 2011.   Boston sent him to Oakland for Conor Jackson on August 31st and then placed him on waivers where he was claimed by the Indians.

Tyler Sturdevant,  25, RHP.  In 2011 Sturdevant was 4-2 1.98 in 41 innings in Class A, 3-1 3.30 in 30 innings in AA and then threw just 3.2 innings in 2 games at the AAA level.

Mitch Talbot,  28, RHP.  He was acquired by the Indians from the Rays in December, 2009.  He pitched in 13 games for the Clippers in 2011, 7 of them as a starter.  His record was 4-2 4.26.  He pitched in relief against the Ironpigs on July 22nd and 25th giving up 2 runs on 4 hits in 4.2 innings.

The catchers for the Columbus Clippers are both veterans over the age of 30.  Luke Carlin is a 30 year old switch-hitter.  He hit just .213 with 5 homers for the Clippers this year.    Paul Phillips is a 34 year old right handed hitting catcher.  He hit .237 with 3 home runs.
25 year old Beau Mills plays the majority of games at first base with veteran first baseman Nick Johnson who turns 33 next week  now being used primarily as the DH.  Mills hit .300 with 11 home runs at Akron and then hit .269 with 7 home runs in 119 at bats with Columbus.   Johnson hit just .201 with 6 HR for the Clippers.
Other infielders include, Argenis Reyes, 2B.  The 28 year old switch-hitter hit .313 but had just 83 at bats because recently promoted Luis Valbuena was the primary second baseman and had 17 home runs in over 400 at bats this year.  Valbuena’s bat leaves a big void in the Clippers lineup.  Rounding out the infield should be Juan Diaz at shortstop and Jared Goedert at third base.   The 26 year old right handed hitting Goedert  had 284 at bats with the Clippers and hit .271 with 15 homers.  The 22 year old Diaz is a switch-hitting shortstop who spent all of 2011 at Akron where he hit .255 with 9 home runs and 60 RBIs.
In the outfield the Clippers have 29 year old right handed hitting Jerad Head.  In 422 at bats with the Clippers he hit .284 with 24 home runs and 70 RBIs which puts him close to the same numbers as Brandon Moss had from the left side for the Ironpigs.  He had 13 home runs vs RHP and 11 home runs vs. LHP.     Ben Copeland is a left handed hitting outfielder who got called up from Akron where he hit .265 with 6 homeruns.  He had just 15 at bats with the Clippers and hit just .133.   Travis Buck is a 28 year old left fielder who bats from the left side and he hit just .256 with 4 homers in 121 at bats this year.  Tim Fedroff is also a left handed hitting left fielder and he is just 24.  He split time between Akron and Columbus this year, hitting .338 with 2 HR for Akron and .272 with 1 homer for Columbus.  Chad Huffman is a 26 year old right handed outfielder who played 124 games for Columbus this year.   He hit .246 with 13 home runs.  Rounding out the outfield is Thomas Neal, a 24 year old right handed hitter who played most of 2011 in the Pacific Coast League where he hit .295 with 2 home runs.   Left handed Venezuelan centerfielder Ezequiel Carrera was a key member of the Clippers this year hitting .287 and stealing 35 bases but he was recently called up to the Indians.  He was the only stolen base threat they had and now he is gone.
The Columbus Clippers are still a very good team and a very formidable opponent.  But they are not the same team that cruised through the International League with an 88-56 record in 2011.   It should be an exciting series.

Yo Ruben! All in fun from the desk of Decal.

“For the safety and security of our fans, outside food & beverage can not be brought inside Coca-Cola Park.”  My apologies if that beverage is one I’m not familiar with at CCP.   I guess you also missed the memo about wearing red but at least you’re wearing an Ironpigs cap!    But seriously Ruben,  we love seeing you watching the Ironpigs at Coca-Cola Park.   It’s nice to know the big club is interested in what’s going on up here in the valley.   Keep up the good work.

Coming Soon to a Ballpark Near You….

Irene:  Pigapalooza Part Deux

Rain or shine, rain or shine,  it’s on it’s on.   No wait.  Nevermind, it’s off.

No game on Sunday per Matt Provence on Twitter.   No big surprise to me.  The 2 primary routes from my home to the ballpark are both closed due to flooding.

See y’all at the doubleheader beginning at 6:05 on Monday.   Let’s hope the sequel turns out better than the original.

Podsednik’s First Hit + Random Notes

It was 18 up and 18 down for Red Wings pitcher Kyle Gibson when Scott Podsednik led off the bottom of the 7th inning still looking for his first hit in an Ironpigs uniform.   What followed was a memorable moment that broke up the perfect game, the no-hitter and eventually the shutout.    It made me wonder if any other Ironpigs player ever had a triple as their first hit in an Ironpigs uniform.

Ryne Sandberg likes to run and now with Podsednik, Thompson and Orr he has 3 guys capable of stealing a base at any time.   I liked Ryno’s lineup today, borrowing from Tony LaRussa by putting a leadoff guy in the #9 spot. That keeps Thompson, Podsednik and Orr back to back to back in the batting order.

Jeff Larish has been a much better hitter on the road this year, hitting 7 of his 8 homeruns away from Coca-Cola Park.  His road batting average is .295 compared to .183 at home.   Hopefully a trip out of town will help him get his stroke back.   No DH again vs. Gwinnett so one of the big bats will have to sit.  I like watching the majestic moon-shot homeruns of Erik Kratz and Tagg Bozied.   Makes me wonder why it took so long to get Bozied into the lineup.   There is a nice balance of left/right power on this team.

There was a report last week that the Braves may promote Julio Teheran for a start on June 1 but I guess that won’t happen since he is scheduled to pitch against the Ironpigs on Monday.  That means the Ironpigs will be facing 2 of the best young pitchers in the IL on consecutive days.   Looks like the Ironpigs will miss Todd Redmond this series since he pitched on Sunday.  With Rodrigo Lopez traded to the Cubs it appears we’ll be seeing some different starting pitchers than we saw last week.

Could the Achilles heel of the 2011 Lehigh Valley Ironpigs be their starting pitching?  The combined ERA of Bump, Bass, Bonine and Feierabend is 5.64.

Let’s have a good roadtrip and hope for an uneventful Opt Out Wednesday.

Frandsen Suspended

Kevin Frandsen was suspended for 50 games today for violating major league baseball’s drug policy.  He is being replaced on the Ironpig’s roster by Tagg Bozied.

Andy Tracy, Third Baseman

As I was checking boxscores from around the minor leagues tonight I noticed that Andy Tracy made his second start of the year for the Reno Aces in the Pacific Coast League.   What really surprised me was that he started the game at third base.  In 3 years with the Ironpigs I believe Andy only played the hot corner one time.   Perhaps it was because the Aces regular third baseman Cody Ransom has just 1 hit in 11 at bats with that 1 hit being a homerun.  Andy is now 2-6 on the year and both of his hits have been doubles.

Also of interest,  outfielder Wily Taveras is 8-23 .348 at Colorado Springs, pitcher Brandon Duckworth has 1 start with Pawtucket and is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 5 innings of work.  Ryan Vogelsong is in the starting rotation for the Fresno Grizzlies and is 2-0 1.59 in his 2 games.  In 11 1/3 innings he has 17 strikeouts.   Oscar Villarreal is 0-0 6.75 for Albuquerque and outfielder Chris Aguila is 2-4 .143 for the New Orleans Zephyrs.  I could find no 2011 statistics for Michael Taylor other than finding him listed with the Sacramento River Cats.

I’m not sure anyone mentioned this before but the Red Sox sent one of Noise Nation’s favorite visiting outfielders, Bubba Bell to the Indians for cash considerations.  Bubba is now playing for the Columbus Clippers and is 4-9 .444 after 4 games.

2011 Ironpigs Younger Than 2010 Squad on Paper

Our friend at the Desk of Decal posted these numbers in a comment today.. I thought I would share with you all..

A comparison of the 2010 Ironpigs to the 2011 Ironpigs in respect to age:

Catcher
Paul Hoover, 34 vs. Erik Kratz 30 (-4)
Dane Sardinha 31——

Infielders
Andy Tracy, 36 vs. Tagg Bozied 31 (-5)
Wilson Valdez, 32 vs. Ronnie Belliard, 35. (+3)
Luis Maza, 30 vs. Josh Barfield, 28 (-2)
Melvin Dorta, 28 vs. Kevin Frandsen, 28 ( 0 )
Cody Ransom, 34 vs. Jeff Larish, 28 (-6)
Brian Bocock 25—

Outfielders
John Mayberry Jr. 26 vs. Delwyn Young, 28 (+2)
DeWayne Wise, 32 vs. Brandon Moss, 27 (-5)
Rich Thompson, 31
Chris Duffy, 30 vs. Cory Sullivan, 31 (+1)
Neil Sellers, 28 vs. Matt Miller, 28 ( 0 )

Pitchers
Brian Mazone, 33 vs. Ryan Feierabend, 25 (-8)
Joe Savery, 24 vs. Vance Worley, 23 (-1)
Nate Bump, 33–
Brandon Duckworth, 34 vs. Jason Grilli, 34 ( 0 )
Ryan Vogelsong, 32 vs. Eddie Bonine 29 (-3)
Drew Carpenter 25—
Brian Gordon, 31—
Scott Mathieson, 26—
Mike Zagurski, 27—
Oscar Villarreal, 28 vs Brian Bass, 29 (+1)

Overall, the starters (Looking at opening day rosters; This isn’t an exact computation) for 2011 are collectively 27 years younger than the 2010 squad. Granted the difference between a 34 yr old and a 31 yr old is not that great, but when you have a generally younger team it seems the athleticism is on a higher level.

OinK!

This Game Makes Me Sick

May 2, 2009 seemed like just another ballgame at Coca-Cola Park but with a record of 10 wins and 11 losses the Ironpigs were on the brink of history.  Entering the second month of their second full season, the Ironpigs were known for one thing,  losing.  But on this balmy Saturday night, for the first time in franchise history, a .500 record was within their grasp.  Standing in the way was one of the most storied franchises in minor league baseball, the Toledo Mud Hens.   The temperature at gametime was in the mid-60’s and there was a mild breeze.   Most of the 8,375 in attendance were there for the Men’s T-shirt giveaway but the true diehard fans were hoping to see the Ironpigs reach their impossible dream.

On the mound for the Ironpigs was Drew Carpenter, probably their most consistent starter in 2009.   He seemed up to the task by retiring the Mud Hens in order, striking out two in the top of the first.  Rich Thompson led off the bottom of the first with a double and stole third after Jason Donald flied out.  Mike Cervenak followed with a single scoring Thompson from third.

Carpenter struggled in the second inning.   Jeff Larish led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch.  With 2 outs, Mike Hessman walked.  Larish and Hessman both scored on a triple by Will Rhymes.   It would be the first of several key triples by the Mud Hens.

The Ironpigs went quietly in the bottom of the inning and Carpenter settled down to retire Toledo 1-2-3 in the third.  In the bottom of the third, Mike Cervenak and Andy Tracy drew two-out walks and John Mayberry followed with a single to drive in Cervenak with the tying run.

Jeff Larish led off the 4th for Toledo and doubled to center field.  A double by Clete Thomas drove in Larish to put Toledo up 3-2.

The 5th inning saw each team score a run.   Jeff Larish drove in a run for Toledo with a basehit to center and Cervenak drove in Jason Donald after he walked and stole second.

Steve Green replaced Carpenter on the mound in the 6th inning and allowed 2 runs on a double by Max St. Pierre.  The Pigs fought back with a 3 spot in the bottom of the inning.  Jeremy Slaydon (double), Rich Thompson (triple) and Jason Donald (single) each had an RBI.  After 6 innings the score was 6-6.

Tyler Walker replaced Green on the mound in the 7th. Both teams got 2 runners on base but failed to score.   Cedrick Bowers came in to pitch the 8th and issued one out walks to Max St. Pierre and Ryan Roberson.  Don Kelly was put in to run for St. Pierre and he scored the go ahead run when Danny Worth singled to center.   Kelly remained in the game in left field.  It would turn out to be the single most important move in the game.

Coming in to bat in the bottom of the 8th, the Ironpigs now trailed 7-6.   Toledo brought in pitcher Freddy Dolsi to pitch the 8th inning.   The first 2 batters he faced got on base.  J.J. Furmaniak was hit by a pitch and Rich Thompson walked.   Jason Donald tried to bunt them over but Furmaniak was thrown out at third.  Mike Cervenak followed with a single to score Thompson from second with Donald moving to third while Cervenak took second on a throwing error.  The score was now 7-7 and the Ironpigs had runners on 2nd and 3rd with just 1 out and Andy Tracy due up.  To everyones dismay, Tracy was issued an intentional walk to load the bases.  The strategy backfired as Mayberry followed with a single to score Donald.  With the bases still loaded, David Newhan walked to force home Mike Cervenak.  After a pitching change, Paul Hoover ripped a double to right field scoring Tracy and Mayberry.  After the smoke had cleared, 5 runs had crossed the plate and the Ironpigs held a commanding 11-7 lead with only one more inning to play.

Ninth inning:  enter Gary Majewski.

Brent Clevlen leads off with a homerun to right field making the score 11-8.  Mike Hessman singles and Will Rhymes walks.  That brought Don Kelly up to bat for the first time after entering the game as a pinch runner.  Kelly rips a triple to center field scoring 2 runs and Dusty Ryan follows with a single to bring home Kelly with the tying run.   Score tied, 11-11 after 9 innings as the Ironpigs fail to score in their half of the 9th despite singles by Cervenak and Tracy.

Mike Koplove replaces Majewski in the 10th inning.  Jeff Larish leads off with a single to right but he is forced out at second when Brent Cleven fails to bunt him over.  Clete Thomas then reached on an error by David Newhan, moving Cleven to second.  Mike Hessman then pops out for what would have been the third out if not for the error.  Will Rhymes then drew a 2 out walk to load the bases for Don Kelly.  For the second straight inning Kelly triples to clear the bases.  3 runs score, all unearned.

The Ironpigs didn’t score in the bottom of the 10th and the home crowd went home disappointed as the Ironpigs dropped a heartbreaker to the Mudhens in 10 innings 14-11, but more importantly,  it dropped their record to 10-12 after being so close to 11-11.

The game ended at approximately 11:25 PM after 4 hours and 18 minutes.  Mike Cervenak had four hits for the Ironpigs while Rich Thompson, Andy Tracy, and John Mayberry added 2 each.  Jeff Larish  had 3 hits for the Mud Hens and appears to like hitting at Coca-Cola Park.   4 others had 2 hits each, most notably Don Kelly who had a big 2 run triple in the 9th and a 3 run triple in the 10th after entering the game as a pinch runner in the 8th inning.  And after blowing that 4 run lead in the 9th inning,  Gary Majewski would never be the same.

It would be another 2 months before the Ironpigs would finally reach the .500 mark.  It happened in late June when they broke up a no-hit bid by Orioles pitcher Chris Tillman in the 7th inning and defeated the Norfolk Tides 6-1.  It moved their record to 38-38 and came in franchise game number 220.    After 3 years and 432 games, they are still striving for a record that shows more wins than losses.

just a MINOR perspective

That’s the name of a very interesting blog by Phillies minor league pitcher Eric Pettis.   Eric was a 35th round draft pick out of UC Irvine last June but he really opened a few eyes by going 8-0 1.37 with 7 Saves at Williamsport last summer.  Eric’s likely 2011 destination will be the Lakewood BlueClaws.   I enjoyed going back and reading his thoughts from his first professional season and he just added his first entry of 2011 titled “Day 1: Season 2”.   I’ll copy the link and the initial 2011 post below.   Perhaps Dan can add the link  to the blogroll on the homepage.   Be sure to follow Eric on Twitter as well (@eric_pettis).

Day 1: Season 2

So here we go again. The inevitable moment that still doesn’t seem quite real to me has finally arrived. I have officially reported to Spring Training. Minor League Baseball isn’t about smooth transitions. You get thrown into and out of the fire at will and only the mentally strong survive. This morning when I arrived at the airport I tweeted (insert shameless plug for @eric_pettis on twitter) “initiate survival mode”. And thats really what it is, it’s about surviving. I think I talked about this in one of my posts last year, whoever can make themselves the most comfortable being uncomfortable will prevail. So this morning, as I left the comfort of home, I flipped the switch. For the next six months there is no such thing as comfort. There is only survival. And if you survive, you win. And winning is the ultimate comfort.

….Enough philosophizing and on to the logistics. Today was basically the standard travel day mixed in with some preliminary medical testing that will undoubtedly go on for the next few weeks. Oh, and I got my first taste of Lenny’s, the place where I will be dining every day for the next month (you can bet there will be a post about that later on down the road). Tomorrow is a 5:15 AM wakeup call for blood work and our official physicals. Reporting from Clearwater, FL I’m Eric Pettis, back to you in the studio……
