State of the IronPigs – April Showers

With today’s travel day I thought it would be a good time to review the IronPigs April performance.

First, let’s look at the team as a whole.

Pitching

ERA – 11th of 14 teams at 5.07. (Indianapolis leading with 2.58)

Hits allowed – 8th of 14 with 204. (Rochester leading with 135)

Runs allowed – 4th of 14 with 133 allowed. (Syracuse allowed the most with 149)

Walks allowed – 3rd of 14 with 112 walks. (Pawtucket leading with 122)

Strikeouts – 13th of 14 with 165. (Durham leading with 257)

*****

Hitting

Avg – 6th of 14 with .255 avg. (Buffalo leading with .305 avg)

Hits – 7th of 14 with 211. (Durham leading with 243)

RBI – 5th of 14 with 103. (Durham leading with 141)

HR – 3rd of 14 with 23. (Buffalo leading with 27)

*****

The pitching is struggling with control, the high walks and lower strikeout numbers confirm our frustration while watching/listening to the games in April. With pitching woes clearly showing in stats… the hitting stats can be misleading.

The Pigs are hitting, but those stats are skewed by blowout wins/losses. We’ve seen more than a few teenage scores on both sides of the scoreboard this season so far.

Looking to the individual efforts

The Hitters

(c) Decal

(c) Decal

After the first full month Cesar Hernandez is hitting .375 good for third overall in the International League and is the league hits leader with 36 and is tops in triples with 3. Cesar’s 7 stolen bases are good for 8th overall, 1 base behind Rich Thompson down in Durham. The 22 year old switch hitting prospect also boasts 8 RBI and 7 stolen bases. Watching him at CCP reminds me of Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen.

Next up is veteran Josh Fields. While his playing time has been limited in National League affiliate games (No DH) Fields has kept it respectable with a .315 average and showing some hustle out there with 2 doubles and 2 triples to go with his 3 home runs. His on base percentage of .373 is second only to Hernandez (.417). Fields could easily step in to a Phillie’s infield role if the need arises.

...that scores Steve Susdorf for the first run.

…that scores Steve Susdorf for the first run.

Steve Susdorf also has had limited playing time but in 12 games he is hitting a solid .280 with 5 RBI and 3 doubles. He has only struck out 4 times in 25 at bats.

Outfielder Leandro Castro, hitting .273 has added to the speed of the team swiping 5 stolen bases second on the team to Hernandez. He also has 6 doubles and 2 HR on the season.

Michael Martinez is also hitting .273 but in fewer games than Castro. Only appearing in 17 games the shortstop has 1 extra base hit and 5 RBI. He has stolen 2 bases and has been caught stealing twice.

Darin Ruf made his first appearance at 1st base. Photo - Cheryl Pursell

Darin Ruf made his first appearance at 1st base. Photo – Cheryl Pursell

Darin “Babe” Ruf has been hot lately and brought his spring average up to .267. He leads the IronPigs with 9 doubles (Good for 4th in the league) and is second in HR with 4 while leading the team in RBI with 15. Ruf could be very dangerous at the plate this summer if he stays at hot as he is now.

Cody Asche adds another double. Photo - Cheryl Pursell

Cody Asche adds another double. Photo – Cheryl Pursell

Cody Asche. Hitting .265 Cody leads the team in HR’s with 5 and has been solid with 11 RBI in 22 games. He has 22 strikeouts though, only 2nd most on the team behind Ruf with 24.

Jermaine Mitchell. Mitchell is hitting and even .250 and a total of 7 extra base hits. (5 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR) Mitchell also drove in 5 runs so far.

Overbeck's HR. Photo - Cheryl Pursell

Overbeck’s HR. Photo – Cheryl Pursell

Cody Overbeck is leading the team in HRs with 5 and hitting .250 as well. Cody has 12 RBI and is on the higher end of the strike out scale with Asche and Ruf.

Steve Lerud is hitting .233 in 9 games behind the plate for the Pigs. He does have 2 HR and 5 RBI so his time hasn’t been wasted. Steve’s playing time is hampered with prospect Tommy Joseph as the #1 catcher but he’s been good off the bench.

Joseph throws out his first baserunner of the season! Photo - Cheryl Pursell

Joseph throws out his first baserunner of the season! Photo – Cheryl Pursell

Tommy Joseph has been struggling but showing signs of hope. His .207 average doesn’t reflect his efforts and with warmer weather coming he should get a solid grip and improve. His .207 average is the 3rd worse on the team but he does have 3 HR and 14 RBI to his credit. Those numbers, and his level of play, will improve over the season.

(c) Decal

(c) Decal

Pete Orr. Who would have thought Pete would have been listed this late. If you hadn’t figured it out I am posting in order of batting average highest to lowest and I’ve only got one more IronPig to go. Pete is hitting .163 in 17 games with one extra base hit to his name. This is one of those head shakers. We know Pete can play and I guarantee we will see improvements over April for him. Everyone has a bad month now and then and I’m saying he becomes a threat soon.

Gillies scores! Photo - Cheryl Pursell

Gillies scores! Photo – Cheryl Pursell

Tyson Gillies. While his .148 average looks poor, it has been rising lately. He has a triple and home run under his belt along with 4 stolen bases. Tyson needs playing time and when he’s ready he will hit like we know he is capable of.

The Pitchers

I’m going to list the pitchers by ERA regardless of Starter vs. Reliever.

Savery file photo (c) Cheryl Pursell

Savery file photo
(c) Cheryl Pursell

Joe Savery is 1-0 with a .93 ERA. His call up to fill a role with the Phillies wasn’t a fluke and unless someone in Philadelphia doesn’t show improvement soon he will be replacing them.

Jimenez. Photo - Cheryl Pursell

Jimenez. Photo – Cheryl Pursell

Cesar Jimenez is 0-1 with a 1.69 ERA. He has 2 starts to his credit of 6 game appearances and has struck out 15 while walking only 3. Not bad Cesar, not bad at all.

(c) Decal

(c) Decal

Justin DeFratus is 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA. Justin seems to be filling the role Michael Schwimer did 2 years ago as the pitcher of record for late inning rally wins. In 9 games he’s struck out 11 and walked only 4. DeFratus has the stuff for the Phillie’s bullpen just need a spot to open up.

(c) Cheryl Pursell

(c) Cheryl Pursell

Adam Morgan. 1-2 with a 3.23 ERA. In 5 game starts Adam has struck out 20 and walked 9. He’s had some control issues but AAA is the place to work them out. It’s also early in the season and he will be around for a while.

Photo - Noise Nation

Photo – Noise Nation

J.C. Ramirez. No record with a 3.60 ERA. JC has pitched in 4 games, a total of 5 innings for the IronPigs and has allowed 2 earned runs. Didn’t get much time with the Pigs but did an ok job.

Rosenberg pitched well. Photo - Cheryl Pursell

Rosenberg pitched well. Photo – Cheryl Pursell

B.J. Rosenberg. Rosenberg is 0-2 with a 4.79 ERA in 4 games striking out 16 while walking 10. He too is struggling with control but has the potential to work out of it. Keep an eye on him later in the season.

Zach Miner. Miner is 1-1 with a 5.19 ERA in 7 games. Zach is in the More walks than strikeouts club walking 10 and striking out only 5. This guy is a veteran and if anyone on the team can get back into the strike zone it will be him.

Mike Stutes had a good outing tonight! Photo - Cheryl Pursell

Mike Stutes had a good outing tonight! Photo – Cheryl Pursell

Michael Stutes. 1-2 with a 6.39 ERA. I really believe Mike should be in the Phillie’s pen. I know his stats and effort this spring really doesn’t reflect that but he is better than this. Once the winter cobwebs and frustrations clear he will be himself again and become deserving of moving up.

Diekman file photo (c) Decal

Diekman file photo (c) Decal

Jake Diekman. 1-0 with a 6.55 ERA. 14 walks, 7 strikeouts. Control. Control. Control. Look for him to improve as the weather does.

Tyler Cloyd - Perfect through 6 (Photo courtesy of Cheryl Pursell)

Tyler Cloyd – Perfect through 6 (Photo courtesy of Cheryl Pursell)

Tyler Cloyd. 0-3 with a 6.67 ERA. Last year’s IL Pitcher of the Year is struggling with control. New year, new catcher, new uniforms… who knows. Tyler has caught the IronPig pitcher’s control bug and the results are showing. Still, Tyler has struck out 22 while walking 11 but he definitely has better days ahead. Cloyd will be in Philly before the year is done.

Justin Friend went 3 scoreless innings in relief. Photo - Cheryl Pursell

Justin Friend went 3 scoreless innings in relief. Photo – Cheryl Pursell

Justin Friend. 1-1 with a 7.07 ERA. In 14 innings he has struck out 10 and walked 13. How many walks can a team issue? Killing the stats and more importantly the win column. Friend needs some developmental time and he’ll be alright.

Ethan Martin - Still Kram's Choice For Best Hair. Photo - Cheryl Pursell

Ethan Martin – Still Kram’s Choice For Best Hair. Photo – Cheryl Pursell

Ethan Martin. 1-2 with a 7.66 ERA. Martin has struck out a team high of 23 batters but also walked a team high of 20. He’s riding the same train as the others. Perhaps we need to check the water in the clubhouse?

(c) Decal

(c) Decal

Jonathan Pettibone. 0-1 with a 9.64 ERA in 2 games. Yes, the Pettibone that is killing it up with the Phillies right now. Stats don’t make a player and don’t produce results. Each and every player listed above should take note of that.

*****

This is a young team with scattered vets mixed in. They are working to gel together and develop the talents they have. Many other teams out there are heavy on AAAA vets and are leading the pack but this season’s IronPigs are a high quality group of prospects. Prospects are learning and learn by mistakes. Keep the faith Pig Fans. No one, especially me, enjoys losing baseball but it is baseball and it’s in our backyard.

OinK!

The Fastest Man in Baseball

Beginning Saturday evening, the Louisville Bats will be the opponents of the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs in 8 of their next 12 games.  Much of the success of the Louisville Bats this year has to be credited to their pitching staff which has the 2nd best team ERA in the International League.  But, the Bats currently have the worst hitting team in the International League with their team batting average at .201,  just barely above the Mendoza line.   Outfielder Felix Perez (.275) is the only player hitting over .240 with old friend Jason Donald next at .238.  Louisville has scored the fewest runs, they have the fewest hits, the fewest RBI’s, the lowest on base percentage and the lowest slugging percentage in the league.  However, even with the poor team offensive numbers, they can score runs in other ways, mainly because of one man.

At the top of their batting order is 22 year old switch hitting outfielder Billy Hamilton, the #1 prospect in the Cincinnati Reds organization.  In case you don’t know him, Billy Hamilton was the 2nd round draft pick (57th overall) of the Cincinnati Reds in the 2009 player draft.  He began last season playing in the California League where he hit .323 and stole an amazing 104 bases in just 82 games.  But he didn’t stop there.  He was promoted to the AA Southern League where he played in 50 more games.  In those 50 games he hit .286 and stole an additional 51 bases giving him a 2012 stolen base total of 155 in 132 games.  Everyone has heard the baseball phrase, “a walk is as good as a hit”, but in the case of Billy Hamilton, quite often a walk will turn into a triple because he is going to run and he is going to run often.

It could be advantageous to the Ironpigs that they are facing Louisville while they are in the midst of a team hitting slump.   The lack of hitting has also affected Billy Hamilton as he is hitting just .213 in 75 at bats this year, but even with the low average he still has stolen 14 bases in 15 attempts this year which easily tops the International League in both categories.

I have mixed feeling going into the upcoming 8 games against Louisville.  As an Ironpigs fan I always want to see our team win.  But at the same time, as a baseball fan, I want to see Billy Hamilton run.  Maybe we can win and throw him out a few times when he tries to steal.  That would be perfect.

TV was on Mute – Radio was On. IronPigs are Homesick

Before we look at this morning’s game I want to start with this…

Pig fans who don’t listen to the IronPig’s radio game broadcast are missing out. Matt Provence and Jon Schaeffer are on 1320 and 1230 AM doling out the play by play and commentary for every IronPigs game.

Honestly, I was excited to see our friends get National Media Attention with a game airing live on the MLB Network this morning. A high class baseball production, in HD, far exceeding many minor league teams. I subscribed to MiLB TV several years and many of those teams cannot even be viewed in the same category as Service Electric when it comes to its baseball programming.

But.. BUT.. I always mute the TV because I prefer the radio.

I think others do as well.

Each game I wait anxiously for the Trivia question. I prep myself on the PC (Or phone if at CCP). Baseball reference’s website is open to the International league historical stats. A Google search window is open. The email is prepped and ready and waiting for the answer to be typed in and sent. I’m listening to the radio because it is a good 30-45 seconds ahead of the online streaming audio. Sounds like a lot right?

Usually around the 3rd or 4th inning Matt Provence will send the ever increasingly difficult trivia question out.

Then the frantic madness begins.

Find the answer online. Type it in. Click Send. Sigh of relief and then wait.

Sometime around the 7th or 8th inning the answer, and winner, are announced.

I usually have my answer out within 5 seconds. I’ve won once this season so far. Most of my answers are correct.

The radio@ironpigsbaseball.com mailbox must be overflowing in that insane minute of submissions but only the first correct answer wins.

Pigs Radio hasn’t replaced those great memories of Harry and Richie from my childhood but it’s close.
****

The IronPigs must be happy to jump on the wagon train west this afternoon. They head to Indianapolis for 4 games, then to Louisville for 4 before returning back to Coca Cola Park for identical series to start off May. (Wonder if they’ll carpool)

I am looking forward to May. It will signify the IronPigs return home to CCP but also a fresh start at CCP.

IronPig’s road record to date: 5 wins 2 losses

IronPig’s home record to date: 2 wins 8 losses

They are struggling at home. No doubt.

Today’s game was no different.

Starter Tyler Cloyd looked great in the first two innings but faltered in the 3rd allowing 4 runs on a bunch of singles. He allowed 2 more runs in the 6th and his final line of 6 innings, 6 runs on 9 hits. Tyler struck out 4 and walked 3.

Some excitement in the 9th inning. Manager Dave Brundage earned his first ejection of the season arguing a very questionable balk call in the top of the ninth. Steve Lerud followed suit and left the game as well. Pigs Radio did note that the IL Umpire evaluator was in attendance at this game and has a first hand view of the play in question. Punishments probably await them.

The Pigs certainly hit the ball well today but fighting high winds and bad luck, their 11 hits only combined for 2 runs.

Final Score: Bison 8 – IronPigs 2

Weekend Roundup – 4/22/2013

This weekend… well the weather was nice.

The Pigs lost both sides of a double header Saturday.

The Steelhawks lost a heartbreaker by 2 points thanks to a fumbled snap late in the game.

The Pigs topped off Sunday with another loss.

Not a great weekend.

Jonathan Pettibone was called up to the Phillies and Joe Savery was optioned back to Lehigh Valley.

Heard some rumblings that Kratz might return when Carlos Ruiz’s suspension is over. (One of those options left vs waivers things)

Today’s 10:35 game start will be aired live on the MLB Network.

Other than that, enjoy some fun photos from the weekend.

Pigs Drop a Pair

The cold breeze wasn’t enough to cool off the hot-hitting Buffalo Bison, and the home-town ‘Pigs lost both ends of an evening doubleheader.

As we whittle away at the remaining starters who could join Philadelphia for Monday evening’s start against Pittsburgh, Ethan Martin took the mound and eliminated himself from contention.  Of course, he was eliminated by virtue of starting pitching, but he struggled with his control as well.  That was the “book” on Ethan; he’s got great “stuff” but will sometimes suffer if he can’t locate the pitches properly.  This seemed to be the case Saturday in the early game, as many of his off-speed offerings were wild-high.  And it wasn’t just that the high off-speed pitches were there to hit, it was that they were so obviously high that the Bison hitters were able to lay off them and wait for a fastball in the strike zone to swing at.  Martin was able to throw the heater for a strike, but didn’t have the benefit of off-balance hitters, and they made him pay.  He surrendered five hits and four free-passes (plus a hit batsman) which lead to seven runs, all earned.  Justin Friend relieved him and allowed two inherited runners to score, plus one of his own over two innings.

Ethan seemed to be in good spirits when we met him briefly after the second game.  I would expect the young starter will continue to work on his craft and his day to be called up to help Philadelphia will come soon enough.

The ‘Pigs were able to get some hits, draw some walks, and have some chances–but just weren’t able to capitalize on them.  Cody Overbeck went 2/3 with 2 RBI on a homer and a double, but was thrown out at the plate.  Darrin Ruf struck out twice on the big looping curves from former ‘Pig Dave Bush to leave four on base.  Cody Asche went 2/3 to bring his average up to .260 on the season.

Nevertheless, the Home Team was able to bring the tying run to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom-half of the final-inning seventh in the form of outfielder Leandro Castro.  I have to say I’ve been impressed with the young outfielder thus far this season.  But had I been the manager, I probably would have inserted Josh Fields as a pinch-hitter and told him to either hit a grand-slam or strike out trying.  Brundage sent Castro up, though, and he put a charge into a 2-1 pitch.  It wasn’t quite high enough to get into the wind stream, and was caught at the warning track in left-center.  It brought 9,000 of us at Coca Cola Park to our feet, though.  Hats off to Leandro for giving it his best!

The second game began with spot-starter Zach Miner on the mound.  While starter BJ Rosenberg was on normal rest to have started the game, it was pointed out on the radio broadcast the other day that if a “bullpen” day is in order, it might be easier to have it in a seven-inning game rather than a nine-inning game.  Miner started shaky, yielding a few walks before getting a pep-talk from pitching coach Ray Burris in the first inning with the bases loaded and no outs.  Whatever the pitching guru said to Zach, it worked.  He extracted himself from the situation with a strikeout, a pop-up and a come-backer.  He then went on to pitch two more innings of no-hit ball.  Justin De Fratus then came in for innings four and five and scattered three hits and two walks to go along with three strikeouts, but allowed no runs as the IronPigs nursed a 1-0 lead.  Gillies had drawn a walk, stolen second, and easily scored on a Cesar Hernandez single.

The red-hot Bisons don’t go away that easily, though.  While the two runs surrendered by reliever Mike Stutes were listed as “earned” it sure didn’t feel that way as the ‘Pigs worked their way up to four errors in the shortened game.  Jake Diekman allowed an inherited runner to score as he pitched for the last out in the top of the seventh.

Once again, the ‘Pigs had a chance in the home half:  they had runners on second and third–enough to walk off down 2-1–and the mighty Cesar couldn’t come through.

Alas, it wasn’t meant to be on the clear and blustery evening, but our young club showed that they could play with experienced and talented AAA players from the first-place Blue Jays’ farm team.

Once again, heightened security was present at the park as bags were inspected and officers discretely patrolled the park.  “Sweet Caroline” made an appearance and the 9,000 in attendance enjoyed the evening.  Many left after the first game, but as always, faithful were on hand until the last out was made 14 innings later.  Quality glass pint glasses with John Mayberry Jr.’s likeness were distributed, and folks with an eye on Philadelphia lamented Cliff Lee’s difficult night.  I was following the SteelHawks game via Twitter updates, and was disappointed to learn of another narrow loss in a very high-scoring game.

But today’s another day.  BJ Rosenberg is set to take the mound in an afternoon game and the sun is out.  Pending a change, I’d guess Tyler Cloyd–now the scheduled Monday starter–will be called to Philadelphia with Jon Pettibone moving up to take the Monday AM-start in Allentown on regular rest.  Perhaps Tom Cochran will move up from Reading to take Cloyd’s spot.  But we shall see.

It’s dog day today, and knit caps will be distributed to the first 3,000 adult humans.  The Bisons don’t have a projected starter, so perhaps we can get a win from them.

Put on your Sunday vests.  Put on your powder blues.  Let’s get out there and show why we’re the best fans in the MiLB.

See you at the park,

@Kram209

IronPigs 2nd Consecutive Game Postponed – Excessive Wetness

Amid heightened security at Coca-Cola Park, Friday night’s game between the Lehigh Valley IronPigs and the Buffalo Bisons at Coca-Cola Park was postponed due to rain and impending weather. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, April 20, with an updated start time of 5:35 p.m.

I ran into IronPigs GM Kurt Landes and thanked him for the increased security at the entry gates –  I noticed every bag being thoroughly checked. He replied “You’re welcome, it’s the right thing to do” and despite whatever your personal feelings may be on the tragedy in Boston, GM Landes is absolutely correct by simply saying it’s the right thing to do. First class are the words that come to mind and what keeps this season ticket holder and many others coming back for every game!

“Please note that all gates open at 4:30 p.m. for Saturday’s contest.  Each of the doubleheader games are scheduled for seven innings and only one ticket is needed to attend both games.  Tonight’s Friday Night Fireworks show presented by Giant will be rescheduled (date TBD).”

Saturday is John Mayberry Commemorative Pint Glass Giveaway day presented by East Stroudsburg University for the first 3000 adults 18-and-over.  It important to get there early if you don’t want to miss out on this giveaway as there were a number of people in line Friday night to exchange their tickets. The weather appears decent enough on Saturday to have a spillover of fans from Friday’s postponement.

2013 IronPigs Rain-out Policy

“The first 3,000 fans 18 and older will receive John Mayberry commemorative pint glasses presented by East Stroudsburg University as part of Saturday’s 5:35 p.m. twin bill. A fan favorite during his time in the Lehigh Valley, Mayberry trails only Andy Tracy as the IronPigs all-time home run king.

Saturday’s game also features an authentic road jersey auction, with proceeds benefitting IronPigs Charities.  IronPigs fans can bid on their favorite player’s jerseys from anywhere with the easy-to-use Qtego service that allows fans to place bids, receive notifications when outbid and check the status of their item via text messages on their mobile phones.  Fans without texting access can even call in their bid after registering their phone at Coca-Cola Park. Register your phone from anywhere in the U.S. by texting “Pigs” to 79230. Detailed instructions on how to place your bid will be made available at ironpigsbaseball.com.

Winning bidders will have the opportunity to go on the field immediately following the game to have their jersey autographed. Bidders not in attendance at Coca-Cola Park can either pick up their signed jersey at a later date or have it mailed directly to them.”

(all quoted sections from http://www.ironpigsbaseball.com)

Hopefully everyone made it home safely since the drive home was certainly treacherous at times and we’ll see you at the Park on Saturday!

‘Pigs Open Weekend Series Tonight

Friday Night Fireworks, photo courtesy ironpigsbaseball.com

Friday Night Fireworks, photo courtesy ironpigsbaseball.com

The IronPigs will open a “wrap-around” series with the Buffalo Bison tonight with a 7:05 first pitch–weather permitting.  As of this writing, we’re still expecting Ethan Martin (could be held back by the Lannan/Savery spot in Philly) versus old friend Dave Bush (could be held back by rain).  The Bisons scored 27 runs yesterday, and the IronPigs 14–so no doubt we’re in for a pitcher’s duel tonight if they can get this one in.   The Bison are now the AAA affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, with the Mets having been exiled to Las Vegas.  Some will remember the days when Syracuse was the Jays affiliate….

Also, there will be NoiseNation presence in the Hot Corner tonight, as we prepare for a full review of the new seats and amenities available there.

As mentioned above, weather may be a factor this evening, while the rest of the weekend looks OK.  One strategy is to remain at home until social media informs you that the tarps are coming off.  That will allow you approximately 30 minutes to get to the park while they line the field.  As per usual though–and barring extraordinary weather happenings–they will open the doors.  Stay tuned!

Our new executive chef begins to flex his culinary muscles for this second home stand with a few new offerings at the Pig Stop.  First up on Friday is “The Last Call” – Bourbon BBQ Chicken, Cheddar-Jack Cheese, Char-grilled Jalapeno & Coleslaw on Panini-pressed french bread.  Only $6.00!

Saturday evening first pitch looks to be 6:35PM barring a double-header addition from the Friday game. Projected starter for the ‘Pigs is BJ Rosenberg.  The Bison do not have a projected starter at this time.  It’s John Mayberry Jr. pint glass night for the first 3,000 adults.  Also on Saturday, authentic game-worn road jerseys will be auctioned to benefit ironpigscharities.

Saturday night at the PigStop:  “The Damn Yankee” – Sliced Meatloaf, French Fried Onions, Cheddar Cheese & stone-ground Dijonaise on sourdough for $7.00.

Knit Cap, photo courtesy @porkcenter

Sunday is knit cap day with a 1:35 first pitch (barring double-header, yadda, yadda) for the first 3,000 adults.  It’s also dog day in the park.  The IronPigs look to send Tyler Cloyd to the mound if things go as planned, to face RHP Claudio Vargas.

At the PigStop: “The Jackhammer” – Honey Cured Ham, Pepper-Jack Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato & Chipotle Mayo on  a Wrap.  $6.50

..

Monday is an “Education” day (I’m still unsure about the actual education going on, but I don’t have a problem with it per se) with the usual 10:35AM start.  It works well as a “get away” day for the ‘Pigs as they get set for the far-western road trip to Indianapolis and Louisville.  I do plan on stopping by for only me second ever early day game–the last was the Elarton “beginning of the end” game–I think versus Brundage’s Gwinnett team last year.  I’m hoping for a better result this time.  Jon Pettibone is scheduled to take the mound.

I’m also hoping they reconsider opening the PigStop for some omelets   The PigStop is to be closed on Monday, which is disappointing as a nice omlet and some coffee would be great when I arrive around 10:00!  Side note: the PigStop has added a “coffee bar” with flavors and whatnot.  It’s a great idea; I hope it continues–especially in the MORNING!

Check in for updates as the weekend progresses.  We may add some audio updates too, and there’s an old podcast to be produced, to get you ready for the games.

Please remember to vote every day in the blog contest; we appreciate it!

See you at the park,

JC Ramirez Promoted to IronPigs!

As we posted earlier, the open spot on the Pig’s roster has been officially announced as JC Ramirez.

Reading’s PR dept. posted the info on Twitter moments ago.

Last season Ramirez went 3-2 with a 4.28 ERA in 29 games. He earned 1 save striking out 34 while walking only 17.

Welcome aboard JC!
