Virginia is For Lovers

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and the Richmond Flying Squirrels (AA SF Giants) led by IronPigs President Chuck Domino (who also happens to be the Squirrels Chief Executive Manager) are doing just that by patterning their new stadium experience after that of Coca-Cola Park.  Mr. Domino certainly has the track-record to pull the whole thing off.  Providing of course he can garner the same first-class staff the IronPigs have.  It shouldn’t be too difficult – after all – Virginia is For Lovers!

Good luck Chuck and perhaps one day we’ll bring the Noise Nation bus on down to Squirreltown!

Proposed Richmond Flying Squirrels stadium modeled after Pa. ballpark

By: MICHAEL MARTZ | Richmond Times-Dispatch
Published: March 27, 2012

The stadium that the Richmond Flying Squirrels want to build on North Boulevard has been game-tested in Allentown, Pa., and it appears to be a winner.

The Lehigh Valley Ironpigs have drawn more than 2.5 million fans to Coca-Cola Park since its opening in 2008, setting attendance records for all of Minor League Baseball for the past two seasons.

Allentown, with the fourth-smallest market in Triple-A baseball, hadn’t had a professionally affiliated baseball team for almost 50 years until the Ironpigs came to town the same year that the Richmond Braves played their last game at The Diamond.

Richmond Flying Squirrels Proposed Stadium

“The new stadium and new team have improved our quality-of-life quotient by about 300 percent,” said T. Anthony Ianelli, president and CEO of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce. “It’s had a phenomenal impact on the community.”

Coca-Cola Park is the model for the unnamed stadium that the Flying Squirrels are pitching to people in the Richmond area through a conceptual rendering of a ballpark where no one loses sight of the game on the field.

“It has the kind of design feel we’re going for — a lot of openness,” said Todd Parnell, chief operating officer for the Squirrels, a San Francisco Giants affiliate in the Double-A Eastern League.

Squirrels Chief Executive Manager Chuck Domino also is the president of the Ironpigs, a Philadelphia Phillies affiliate in the Triple-A International League.

“It’s hard to say the ballpark brings people here,” Domino said. “It’s the experience people have at the ballpark.”

In Allentown, the experience has been positive, said Mayor Ed Pawlowski. “You would think you are looking at a high-definition TV,” he said of the view of the game from throughout the park. Pawlowski thinks the stadium would have had a greater economic benefit if it had been in the heart of the city instead of the outskirts — similar to the debate over where to play ball in Richmond. In fact, Allentown is building a $150 million arena complex downtown for the Philadelphia Flyers minor league hockey franchise.

But the mayor is happy with the experience the Ironpigs give fans at Coca-Cola Park, much as fans have warmed to the Squirrels in their first two seasons at The Diamond.

“They’ve done a really good job in giving us a product that is really attractive to families,” Pawlowski said.

While the experience is similar to what the Squirrels plan at the proposed ballpark, the stadiums wouldn’t look exactly the same.

The brick façade of the proposed stadium along North Boulevard has a similar look to Oriole Park at Baltimore’s Camden Yards, which set the standard for new stadiums with an old-time feel when it opened 20 years ago.

“Everybody felt Richmond would be Richmond brick,” Domino said.

Not coincidentally, Populous, the Kansas City, Mo.-based company that is designing the Squirrels’ proposed nest, is a spinoff of HOK Group, which designed the Orioles’ stadium.

The design compresses the two levels of seating at The Diamond into one level of 6,000 seats close to the field and down from the street level instead of up.

Unlike The Diamond, the Squirrels’ stadium would put spectators all the way around the field — along a grass berm where people can pitch their blankets beyond the outfield; in a picnic area in the right-field corner, where a circular bar also would be perched on the outfield wall; and along an open-air concourse where people could buy a hot dog and still see the field.

Together, these features would add about 3,000 seats to the ballpark, while increasing the number of suites from 15 to 20 and doubling the number of concession stands from 25 to 50. The design is meant to be easier for fans, including people with physical disabilities.

The stadium also is designed to be wired — from a scoreboard that would be capable of showing instant replays, videos or live shots around the ballpark, to the television sets that would show the games throughout the concourse.

“The game will never leave you,” Parnell said.

For the players, including those on Virginia Commonwealth University’s baseball squad, the design includes extensive locker room and training facilities beneath the concourse.

The design is based on a $50 million stadium, which is about what Lehigh Valley paid for Coca-Cola Park four years ago with a combination of funding from Lehigh County, the Ironpigs and the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

“I happen to believe it is worth the investment,” said Ianelli, who said the stadium has brought “a little bit of swagger” to Lehigh Valley.

“I hate to be a typical Chamber of Commerce Pollyanna guy,” he said, “but everything they said they’d deliver they’ve delivered.”

Spring Training – IronPig’s 2012 Roster Hopefuls

Looking at a Work Group list posted by Phuture Phillies (Thanks go out to them) we can start getting a rough idea of what our IronPig roster could look like. Keep in mind many soon to be IronPigs are still in the Phillies camp.

Group 1 contains many familiar names:

Catchers
Steve Lerud
Robert Stumpo
John Suomi

Notes – Keep in mind that Erik Kratz is still with the Phillies camp. Although a “fan petition” has been circulating to make Kratz the backup in Philly in place of Brian Schneider, I’m not sure that will happen without Schneider retiring or being released first. It is plausible though and would have a huge impact on the IronPig’s chances of success. Not sure who Stumpo is but Suomi has been a familiar face here in the Lehigh Valley. I’m still thinking we start the season with Kratz starting and Lerud as back up.

Infielders
Miguel Abreu
Albert Cartwright
Troy Hanzawa
Tug Hulett
Tim Kennelly
Cody Overbeck
Matt Rizzotti

Notes – It looks like Rizzotti could be making a case for him to play at AAA this season. With the injuries to the Phillie’s infield I’d say we might get a chance to see Hanzawa as well this year.

Outfielders
Brent Clevlen
Jiwan James
Derrick Mitchell
Mike Spidale
Steve Susdorf
Rich Thompson
Brandon Tripp

Notes – Center field at Coca Cola Park belongs to Rich Thompson. I don’t see anyone on this list other than him being a lock for the roster. Domonic Brown is going to be in left and right could be a toss up or platoon position for the season.

Pitchers
Phillippe Aumont
Tyson Brummett
Nate Bump
Dave Bush
Michael Cisco
Tyler Cloyd
Tom Cochran
Justin Friend
Jeremy Horst
Austin Hyatt
Chris Kissock
Patrick Misch
Juan Morillo
Drew Naylor
David Purcey
JC Ramirez
Brian Rosenberg
Michael Schwimer
Adam Worthington

Notes – The Phillies pitching staff has been relatively healthy and that will help solidify the IronPig’s staff. An early injury to DeFratus could keep him in extended spring training but otherwise we’ve got a lot of returners from last year. I’m expecting Stutes to stay with the Phillies.

These are my notes and thoughts. Nothing official, just a fan’s opinion. Feel free to share yours…

Save Money at the Park, Vol. 3: Food and Drink

Food and Drink

Background:  When I was a kid, we never ate anywhere we went.  Never.  We brought food with us or we waited until we got home.  Now, I over-compensate by eating EVERYWHERE I go.  I’ve got to cut back…it’s expensive and I’m getting fat.

This is the big one, right?  It’s the number one profit center for the organization (or maybe number two after advertising).  It’s why food and drink are at the top of the “prohibited” list above “explosives” and “firearms.”

I spend untold amounts of money each year on food and drink at the games.  I’ve resolved not to, but it’s difficult.  If you go to one or four games per year, by all means, go Hog Wild!  But if you go to 70, well, perhaps you’ll want to try some of these ideas:

  1. Eat beforehand.  It’s obvious, and I’ve tried to do better over the years.  If I have the day off, I’ve got plenty of time to get some dinner on the table before 6PM, leave by 6:30 and we can listen to the pregame in the car on the way and still make it to our seats by the National Anthem if traffic isn’t too bad.  This is not always possible with the kids’ activities and Mrs. Kram and I both work (and she doesn’t so much cook).
  2. Eat on the way.  We usually shun the regular fast food, but stopping for chicken nuggets at McD’s has been done.  The kiddos love the Subway and the Arby’s, so a quick stop there (especially back when we used to get the Arby’s coupons) on the way can save some.  Yes, they still cost money, but it’s less and the kids actually enjoy it more than the regular ballpark food.  We usually just eat in the car to save time, but we’ve been known to loiter (it’s not really tailgating by my take) in the parking lot to finish up if we have time.
  3. Ahh, the tailgating.  It’s about as close as I get to camping.  I don’t like that I can’t use charcoal or drink beer, but it’s a great way to relax before the game.  On a perfect summer evening it’s hard to beat sitting around listening to the pre-game on the radio and grilling up some fresh grub before making our way to our seats.  I’m a big fan of the post-game tailgate, as well.  It beats sitting in traffic (really not that bad for IronPigs usually) and provides an opportunity to reflect on the game and listen to the post-game on the radio.
  4. Alcohol.  If you want to save money, just don’t buy it.  But, for myself, I consider it an integral part of the baseball experience.  I can’t stop at the bar on the way to the game (kids and all) but I hear that Pitchers across the street has some nice specials.  Another strategy is to grab an $8.50 32-oz on the way in (at field level).  If I’m driving, that’s plenty for the evening.  Here’s another idea:  purchase two cups of beer at the regular concession for $5 each—if you purchase the bottles for $5.50 at the bar (club, trough, tiki) and tip $1 each time you’re up to $13 compared with $10 for two beers.  That $3 will pay for your parking.
  5. Other beverages: There are drinking fountains available, and I suppose you could re-fill your water bottle there.  I’ve heard of other re-fill-able cups available at field level during certain promotions as well.
  6. A good snack is the re-fill-able popcorn.  Share it amongst the fam and go back for more.  Buy it early in the evening for maximum effect.  Caution: the salt may cause you to purchase more beverages.
  7. Philly Pretzels.  There were $1 coupons around last year, which could be re-used (thanks, Bert).  This came in handy as my kids bought Philly Pretzels almost every game.  They never got around to the whole “sell them in the club level and make a dollar” idea as they kept eating the product.  Also, if you stay until the end, pretzels are sometimes available on the way out for, what, $1?  Great if you’re hungry on the way home!
  8. Although I’ve never done it, the Picnic Patio may be a way to save on food as well.  It’s built in to the ticket price, but if you’re in the mood to eat a lot of the ballpark food and drink a ton of soda, and you can fill a table, it may be worth it.

Save Money at the Park, Vol. 2: Parking

Parking

Here are some ideas for saving money on the parking.  Really, $3 isn’t a lot to ask once you’ve paid $40 to park at an NFL game or $25 at CBP or even, what, $10 or $15 at Dorney.  Certainly, though, the IronPigs are able to rake in a nice nightly cash take with the $3 per vehicle, but since I’m not privy to their deal with LSI for the parking lot, much of it could be going towards rent.  Still, if you’re coming every night, you might be able to save a few bucks.

  1. Buy four club level seats.  Yes, spend money to save money.  It was a helpful way for me to justify to Mrs. Kram why I needed four seats instead of two.  Four club-level seats gets you a free preferred (I prefer the lower lot, but whatever) parking pass.  I was even able to get parking passes for the playoff games by asking really nicely at the window when I picked up my playoff tickets.
  2. Park elsewhere and walk.  I’ve got a couple friends who do this.  They have family or other friends nearby and are able to park and walk.  Please be careful, though, one ticket for parking illegally will cancel out much of this savings.
  3. Show up late.  No promises, but they often stop collecting parking around the third inning or so.  The downsides are many, though:   You miss part of the game (against fan etiquette), you might not find a spot (new, larger capacity this year with the Tiki Bar), and you might have to walk a long way.  The carts might not be running at this point.
  4. Show up early.  Again no promises, but if you’re there before the lots “open,” you can often park and no one will ask you for the $3.  I’ve been ready to pay it, but I’m not going to chase someone down to give away $3.
  5. Remember to use your parking vouchers.  If you come on a night when it rains, and the game is not played, and you don’t have anything to do, stick around.  Because, once the game is officially a rain game, they’ll hand out parking vouchers on the way out.  Remember to use it for your next game.
  6. Carpool.  It’s obvious, but also friendly to the environment.  If you know someone going to the game that lives near you, consider an arrangement.  For me, despite the parking pass, I often had two vehicles at the game last year, which was inefficient.   I need to do that much less this year.
  7. Take the short bus.  It’s probably a joke, but Jason DiPro is threatening to purchase a small bus.  The IronPigs website says $3 per vehicle—nothing about size.  DiPro will paint the bus black and yellow and fly the IronPigs flag as well as the Noise Nation flag.  It’ll be great because we’ll get a bunch of folks in with one parking fee.  I do have one recommendation for him:  make sure the bus is roadworthy.  I would hate to see IronPigs fans get stranded on the highway (or in the woods…) on the way to an away game!  😉

Transactions 3/22/2012

From Baseball America’s Prospect Blog

RHP Joel Pineiro

RHP Jesus Pirela

LHP Ryan Feierabend

LHP Kasey Kiker

Removed from 40-man: 2B Harold Garcia (outrighted to Double-A)

Some of these moves will influence the IronPig’s Opening Day lineup. Along with injuries to Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and now Michael Martinez… the Pig’s roster will be shaken up.

I will miss Feierabend. He had some bad outtings but he was one of my favorites last season.

An effect of the setting sun, Ryan Feierabend's cleats get lit up slightly before he did. - Photo from Sara Haydt

With all these Pig’s going straight to the Bigs this season the Phillies may also look to fill roster spots with free agent signings. (Translate to read the best of what the other teams cut during spring training.)

We will see.

The IronPig’s Twitter account @IronPigs announced this morning that a series of concerts will be held at The Coke this summer! Even better, music lovers, there will be pre-game concerts at just about every IronPig home game!

A few of the artists performing are Leechboy, The Ritz Band, Sleight of Hand, Red:Karl Eisenhart, Exit 22, SteelCreek and many many more. For a full listing of artists and respective dates, click here.

Two Years. Two Championships. Do the IronPigs Need More Cowbell?

Revisiting this again as I noticed a post on Twitter from @CLBClippers (The Official Twitter of the 2010 & 2011 Triple-A National Champion Baseball Affiliate of the Cleveland Indians.)

“Clippers cowbells are everywhere! #ringyourbell http://twitpic.com/8yyiu7”

As we know, the Clippers defeated our beloved IronPigs in the Governor’s Cup Finals last season before going on to win the Triple A National Championship but they also won the 2010 Triple A National Championship as well!

Back to back, double up, whatever you want to call it… the Clippers have won two championships in consecutive years. In these days of trades, transactions, injuries and that looming control from the parent club above it is quite an achievement to be so successful.

My, not-so-educated guess, would be they have something extra. Something that tips the scales in their favor. Beyond having a highly motivated and talented team. Beyond having an average of 8,704 fans at each home game. They’ve got something extra.

Could it be the cowbells?

They’ve got the “Columbus Clippers Ring Your Bell” song. (I’ll spare your afternoon by not posting it here as it quite catchy and would stick in your head all day)

They’ve got cowbells with a team logo on it.

Photo from the Columbus Clipper's Twitter account

Could it be the cowbell?

What do you think?

Writing this for amusement purposes only. No crusade to enlist legions of cowbellers at the Coke but found it interesting and wanted to share.
