WFTDA Revised Roller Derby Rules for 2014

From the WFTDA:

The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) has released a new version of the Rules of Flat Track Roller Derby, to update the edition published June 2013. This is the seventh edition of rules the WFTDA has developed and published since the organization created the first shared rules for the sport of women’s flat track roller derby in 2005.

The changes, which were approved by WFTDA member leagues, include routine revision and update to include Publications and clarifications since the last publication.  They also reflect a handful of more significant changes to the game, which were beta tested by the roller derby community, reviewed and developed by the WFTDA Rules Committee, and voted on by WFTDA member leagues:

  • Penalty time is reduced to 30 seconds per penalty, in an effort to reduce the impact of penalties (and in particular, power jams) on scores and game outcomes.
  • Direction of Game Play penalties were revised, to bring those penalties in line with the impact spectrum of other contact penalties.
  • The standards for Cutting the Track penalties were tweaked and the Skating Out of Bounds penalty section now includes expanded examples to better describe when actions are penalizable.
  • New language regarding Multi-Player Blocks formalizes the principle that impeding an opponent with an impenetrable wall is illegal. (This does not change the types of actions that may be penalized, but descriptions of such actions were clarified.)
  • Language related to Blocker False Starts has been revised to allow Blockers to yield more simply, without being fully lapped by the pack.
  • Star Passes now delineate a single point of transfer of both helmet cover and position at the point when the jammer releases the Star into the Pivot’s grasp.

Teams may begin playing under the new rules immediately. All sanctioned bouts must be played under the revised rule set starting April 1, 2014.

Read more about the changes here.

Lehigh Valley Rollergirls to premiere all new home teams today in season opener

Allentown, PA- The Lehigh Valley Rollergirls will introduce fans to their new teams, the Metal Vixens and the Blast Furnace Betties, today, March 1st, when they open their 2014 season with a intraleague bout at the Independence Family Fun Center in Schnecksville.

This will be fans first chance to see the new teams in action and see what team their favorite roller girls are skating for.

According to LVRG president Stacey “Wayward Stay” Emencker, “With our home teams, the Vixens and Betties, sporting equally skilled groups of skaters, Saturdays bout is sure to be exciting. It’s going to be a great way to kick off our season and give our fans some must see derby action.”

The Vixens and the Betties will be LVRG’s home teams going forward, with the travel team, the Lehigh Valley Rollergirls All-Stars, made up of the best skaters from both home teams, carrying on the rank of the now retired Hissy Fits in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA).

For real LVRG fans this season there is a multi-game pass available that is good for seven home games at $55, a savings of $50 dollars. The multi-game pass can be purchased here http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/571045.

Tickets for the bout will also be on sale at the door Starting at 5 p.m. when the doors open. The bout will begin at 6. Independence Family Fun Center is located at 4345 Independence Drive, Schnecksville, PA.

About LVRG- With the revival of women’s roller derby sweeping the nation, the Lehigh Valley Rollergirls were established in January 2006 with the hope of bringing the thrill and excitement of the game to the Valley. The Lehigh Valley Rollergirls are the area’s only women’s flat track roller derby league, and have rapidly grown from just a handful of women meeting at open skates to full WFTDA members with a travel team and two home teams. LVRG has received much attention from local media outlets, including PBS and Pulse Weekly, and even traveled to Montreal in June 2007 to play in one of the first international roller derby bouts since the revival of the sport. This 501(c)(7) non-profit, skater-owned and operated league is dedicated to promoting strong women and the spirit of sisterhood, both on and off the track. When not in the rink, the girls can often be found at various community events in the area. http://www.lehighvalleyrollergirls.com

More Metal in the Valley – LVRG Rebrands for 2014!

It’s hard to believe we’re already in 2014. (Still waiting for my hovercraft car and jetpack)

With a new year we have found significant changes for our Lehigh Valley sports world.

– The IronPigs have announced a significant benefit for season ticket holders. (See Kram’s post)

– The Phantoms will officially be in the Valley later this year.

– The Steelhawks are likely playing their last season at Stabler Arena with the Allentown Arena nearing completion.

This morning I found out about some more changes. Our Lehigh Valley Rollergirls have changed as well.

LVRG_rebrand

That’s right! LVRG has joined into the Lehigh Valley theme of metal based team names!

Reportedly, there will be two main teams… the Blast Furnace Betties and Metal Vixens. There will also be an All Star group formed from the best of both teams who will be referred to as the classic LVRG moniker of Hissy Fits.

Taking a look over their 2014 schedule:

lvrg schedule

10 home bouts this season!

Actually, you won’t have to wait until March 1st to see some hard hitting derby action. LVRG is hosting a mixed 3 team tournament on Feb 1st!

Hope to see you out there!
