Tyler Cloyd Named IL Pitcher of the Week!

On his first start at AAA, and possibly his last for quite a while, Tyler Cloyd has achieved what few IronPig pitchers have done.

He was named the International League Pitcher of the week!

From the IL:

Right-handed pitcher Tyler Cloud had never pitched at the Triple-A level prior to his Opening Day start for Lehigh Valley. In fact, Cloud was slated to open the 2012 season with Double-A Reading, but was summoned to Lehigh Valley for the IronPigs first game to replace suspended pitcher Dave Bush. The young prospect delivered six perfect innings en route to the IronPigs’ 3-0 victory over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He is the first pitcher in club history to toss six perfect frames in a game. Cloyd struck out eight Yankees hitters, a number he reached just twice in 22 starts last season. 24-year-old Tyler Cloyd is in his fifth season of professional baseball, having spent his entire career in the Philadelphia organization. Last season he combined to go 9-7 with a 2.77 ERA between Class-A and Double-A. Cloyd is a native of Bellevue, Nebraska.

Paul Janish of the Louisville Bats was named Hitter of the Week.

Back to .500! Steelhawks Take 2-0 Lead in 222 Bangathon!

The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks defeated the Reading Express earlier this season at Stabler Arena and were looking to go ahead 2-0 in the 2nd of 4 games vs. their neighbors down route 222.

A Noise Nation contingent made the trip to Reading, the first at Sovereign Center for most of us, and we were impressed. Several parking garages nearby offered safe parking for $5 (discounted this season for Express and Royal’s hockey games) and it was a short walk to the arena.

Inside we were greeted by friendly fans and employees alike. A little ribbing here and there but all in good fun.

Some things I like about the Sovereign Center:

– The cheesesteak. It was good. Very similiar to what is served at CCP. Sauce mixed in real chopped steak meat and the cheese wasn’t of the plastic yellow variety. (I’m more a provolone guy)

– There is a luxary box that looks just like someone’s back porch. It is beautiful. If I ever win the Powerball.. I’d reserve that one for life.

– The dangling scoreboard at mid-field was pulled into the rafters allowing long field goals.

Some things that the Allentown Arena could improve on looking at the Sovereign Center:

– Bigger and better placed video board

– Multiple entry points

– Better scoreboards. Granted, those from last night were designed for hockey.. a more multi-function scoreboard will be appreciated.

Overall, a fun time.

We ran into our friend Willie the Clown! It’s great to see others out there who share our passion for local sports. The Reading Express group is known as the “Da Railyard” and is just about as loud as us during games.

Two peas in a pod, Willie the Clown and Jimmy T!

Game review courtesy of the Steelhawks:

After a long bye week, following a tough 36-34 loss at the hands of the Bloomington Edge, the Steelhawks headed across Rte. 222 to face their cross town rivals the Reading Express (0-5) for the second of four matchups on the 2012 season. The final result ended the same as the first meeting as the Steelhawks were able to even their record at 3-3 with a hard fought 62-41 victory.

This game however, was vastly different then the first matchup in the first half. The Express this time were able to see their offense and Special Teams click early and went into half time with a 34-28 lead. The Express were able to return two kickoffs on the evening for scores, but were unable to stop the Steelhawks potent offense.

The ‘Hawks were lead by Quarterback Bryan Randall and standout Wide Receiver Irani DeAraujo Jr. on the night. DeAraujo put in one of the top performances on the year offensively hauling in 12 Randall passes, for 134 yards and FIVE touchdowns. Randall finished the evening 23 of 33 passing for 236 yards and seven touchdown passes.

“Irani busted out in a big way tonight,” stated Steelhawks Head Coach Chris Thompson. “He and Randall were on the same page and were able to find some great throwing lanes and get the offense in a rhythm. The Express came in hungry in this game and gave us a run for our money, but I am very proud of the way our guys buckled down and made adjustments at halftime. One game at a time is our mentality going forward.”

The Steelhawks now set their sights on a rematch with the Cedar Rapids Titans back inside the Stabler Arena this coming Saturday night, April 14th at 7 p.m. The game is being deemed Youth Sports Night and is presented by TeamX Sports, the local chapter of NFL Flag Football.

I have to say the game was hard fought and although the final score leaned heavily to Lehigh Valley, it wasn’t until late in the third quarter before the game was out of hand.

Another great time and I encourage you to check out this exciting sport!

ScreecH!

Bryce Harper + One – Syracuse Chiefs Coming Soon

From an article on Yahoo Sports website, I saw that the Bryce Harper circus that arrives with the Syracuse Chiefs will also include left hander John Lannan.

As the above story shows, Lannan was sent to Syracuse to make room for Ross Detwiler.

Lannan actually could have been a huge footnote in baseball history but he succeeded in avoiding that fate.

On August 6, 2007, in just his third major league start, found himself on the national stage as he faced the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park in Barry Bonds’s first start after tying Hank Aaron’s Major League Baseball’s home run record. The 22-year old Lannan held Bonds to no hits; in four plate appearances Bonds fouled out to third, walked, grounded into a double play, and, as Lannan’s last batter, struck out on a 3-2 curveball with two out and one on in the seventh. (wikipedia)

I’d expect we could see Lannan against the IronPigs at some point this season, if not in the upcoming series against the Chiefs.

Steelhawks Head to Reading Tomorrow!

Bethlehem, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks and Reading Express will meet for the second time this season, this time in Reading, PA. Both teams are coming off bye weeks. The last time these teams met, the Steelhawks offense exploded for 86 points in the win, a 2012 IFL season high, and garnered two IFL Player of the Week awards (Bryan Randall and Chris Hazely for Offensive and Special Teams player of the week respectively).

The Steelhawk offense is led by QB Bryan Randall (468 yds, 8 tds). WR Jeff Willis, a former Reading player leads the Steelhawks with seven receiving tds and 303 yds. Look for the latest addition to the Steelhawk roster, Joshua Floyd, the former Express player and current IFL All-Purpose yards leader (742 yds), to be dressed for the game. The Steelhawk defense has been stalwart all season, only giving up 33 rushing yds per game (2nd best in the league). DB Marvin Johnson (41 tackles, 3 int) and DL Bryan Tarkington (15 tackles, 3 sacks) lead the defense.

Reading’s offense is paced by QB Tim Bailey (290 yds, 8tds) and receiver Dominique Jones (19 catches for 182 yds and 4 tds). Defensively John “Trey” Womack (24 tackles) and Mike Dell (3 sacks, 17 tackles) are the Express’s leaders. Bailey had success finishing up the game in the first meeting between the two squads, throwing for three scores.

The game also features the return of Head Coach Chris Thompson making his comeback to the arena in which he helped Coach the Express for five years. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. inside the Sovereign Center.

Fans are invited to make the short trip out to Reading to watch the game live, but for those unable to make the trip, are able to watch the game online by visiting http://www.b2tv.com and look up the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks under the “TEAMS” Section. Steelhawks 2012 home games will be broadcast live on Service Electric TV2 Sports.

6 + 7, 8, 9 = Winning Baseball

When I saw the IronPig’s pitching last night it brought back an old memory.

The Houston Astros of about 10 years ago had a great late inning bullpen. If the starting pitcher got them past the 6th inning the game was essentially over.

7th inning – Octavio Dotel would throw 98mph and mow down opposing batters.

8th inning – Brad Lidge would confuse them with his slider.

9th inning – Billy Wagner would scare them out of the batter’s box with a 100mph fastball.

Get them 6 innings the 7 – 8 – 9 were theirs.

With Tyler Cloyd’s performance aside (6 perfect innings and pulled with only 79 pitches) I saw a glimpse of what the IronPig bullpen could become this season.

Yes, yes… I know the Phillies will impact it but having guys like Aumont, Diekman and Schwimer to close out a game will help these Pigs hold a lead or give confidence for a comeback that a lead would eventually be held.

Phillipe Aumont – in 2011 Aumont tossed 22.2 innings in 18 games for the IronPigs with a 3.18 ERA striking out 37 and walking 14.

Jake Diekman – in 2011 he pitched 65 innings for the R-Phils with a 3.05 ERA striking out 83 while walking 44.

Michael Schwimer – in 2011 for the IronPigs, Schwimer went 9-1 (as a reliever) in 69 innings with a 1.85 ERA striking out 86 to only 22 walks. He also earned 10 saves.

Jeremy Horst – Pitched in 36 games for Louisville last season with a 2.81 ERA.

David Purcey – Split time between Toronto, Oakland, Detroit and Toledo last season.

Brian Sanches – Appeared in 39 games for the Marlins last season with a 3.94 ERA.

Raul Valdes – Also split time with a few teams, pitched for Memphis, St. Louis, SWB and the Yankees in 2011. Wonder if he got a World Series ring?

The bullpen does look strong and could improve when injuries heal. I hear Justin DeFratus is making progress and we might gain a Phillie once Jose Contreras returns.

It will be an exciting season for sure.

Oink!

Dave Bush Suspended… Already?

From the IronPig’s media department:

MLB has announced that tonight’s original starter, RHP Dave Bush, has been suspended five games for his role in a bench-clearing incident in a preseason game vs. the Triple-A Pirates on 3/28… RHP Tyler Cloyd has been promoted from Reading (AA) and will start for LHV tonight.

And so it begins…

Major Announcement – April 1st, 2012

***This was an April fools joke***

I’ve kept this a secret for months and after many meetings, permissions and other various details to wrap up I am happy to announce that….

The Noise Nation Fan Group Reality show will begin filming next week!

Can you believe this?

I didn’t tell DiPro, I didn’t tell Kram, I didn’t even tell my own mother… As part of my deal with Tunrer Broadcasting (The parent company for TrueTV) I was not allowed to divulge any information until today.

So what happens now? Well, a film crew will be following myself and Jimmy T around at Steelhawks games, Roller derby bouts, Philadelphia Union games and last but not least.. at IronPigs game. They are going to track us as we prep for the games, organize road trips and even as we get together to listen/watch away games.

It’s going to be pretty cool.

To allow for production time, etc. there will be about a 2 week delay from filming until the episodes actually air on TV. (A time slot hasn’t been finalized but Sunday afternoon has been mentioned a few times.)

This is an incredible fun thing to happen for us!!

A few perks offered to us for our participation…

– A Noise Nation bus for road trips. (An old souped up short school bus… you guys thought we were joking didn’t you?)

– Studio equipment to record a podcast prior to events

– They are covering all travel costs involved

There is a lot more involved and expect to be a part of the excitement.

How about this! Is this the most awesome thing you’ve heard today? Today.. April 1st, 2012.
