STEELHAWKS JR. FOOTBALL LEAGUE UNVEILED

Bethlehem, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks, along with Velocity Sports Performance at Game Time Fieldhouse and Domino’s Pizza, are proud to announce the unveiling of a new program for the 2014 season, the Steelhawks Jr. Football League or the SJFL. This league aims to give local youth football teams the opportunity to learn more about the indoor arena football game by providing a league that follows that same style of play. All games will take place during the Steelhawks spring PIFL season and will be played inside Stabler Arena.

The league’s Founding Partner is Velocity Sports Performance at Game Time Fieldhouse, who is also the Official Strength and Conditioning Coaches for the Steelhawks. The two organizations will be bringing the indoor arena football experience to the Valley’s youth by offering a full contact, tackle football league using an arena format. Two divisions, 3rd-4th and 5th-6th grades, of tackle football teams will now be able to enjoy the excitement of indoor arena football during this inaugural season.

Domino’s Pizza is the first Sponsoring Partner of the SJFL. The participating Lehigh Valley Domino’s locations are devoted to the growth, and development of our area’s youth programs, and will be offering many additional discounts to participating families. In addition, they will also be offering the 50 point challenge for all Steelhawk home and away games for the 2014 season once again. Any time the Steelhawks score 50 points during the season, participating Domino’s locations in the Lehigh Valley will be offering a special discount on regularly priced pizzas.

Games will take place morning and early afternoons of selected Steelhawk home games. Players must register as part of a team with a designated coach (individuals may contact the league to register as an individual). There is a $125 fee per player that includes a customized team jersey, a Steelhawk General Admission season ticket, a scheduled team session with Velocity Sports Performance, and a reserved spot at the SJFL skills camp at Game Time Fieldhouse. Each team will play a minimum of 4 regular season games in Stabler Arena. There will be a regular season champion based on best record, as decided by pre-determined tie breakers if needed.

For all registered team coaches, there will be a pre-season information seminar that will go through all relevant league information and schedules. Steelhawk coaches and staff will also be conducting a short SJFL 101 crash course on the rules and procedures of the league.

Each player will be receiving one Steelhawk General Admission Season Ticket. There is a Special Offer for SJFL families to purchase additional season tickets at a discounted price (price to be announced at a later date).

Co-League Director and Head Coach Chris Thompson has big plans for the SJFL, “We have achieved so much in three short seasons as a Professional Indoor football team and the Steelhawks Jr. Football League allows us to grow our style of football, to an even wider array of families and kids in the Lehigh Valley area. We are extremely excited to get this program up and running and can’t wait to watch the experiences families share by being a part of this new Jr. Football League. I have had many experiences over the years with youth programs and there is nothing like this experience out there that will be as fun and exciting for the kids as well as the parents watching.”

Similarly, Co-League Director and Game Day Coordinator Lauren Petri is just as excited to get the SJFL up and running, “We have been working hard to get the Jr. League ready to unveil as the latest Lehigh Valley Steelhawks program. I think it will be a great way for kids and families throughout the Lehigh Valley to learn more about arena football and experience firsthand how exciting it is to be a part of.”

Should the LV Phantoms Consider a Name Change?

New town, new fans… could the Lehigh Valley Phantoms benefit from a name change?

Think about it. We already have the IronPigs and the Steelhawks here in the Lehigh Valley. Could the Phantoms become more.. local?

Granted there are places in the Valley reputed to be haunted… the King George Inn.. (oh wait, yeah) well, while whatever cheap money making endeavor demolishes the King George Inn will certainly be “visited” by angry Revolutionary War era spirts that’s for another conversation.

Perhaps the Phantoms could use some suggestions:

– Lehigh Valley Metal Mice?

– Lehigh Valley Platinum Polar Bears?

– Lehigh Valley Wrought Iron Wrangers? (Ok, NY Fans wouldn’t like this one)

– Lehigh Valley Brass Bobcats

I’d love to hear your suggestions! Leave the in the comment section below!

Many teams perform a complete rebranding and are successful when relocating to a new city. Look at the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Richmond lost their Richmond Braves a year before and have a booming operation now. Even our beloved Lehigh Valley IronPigs were once the Ottawa Lynx. Could you imagine the Lehigh Valley Lynx playing at Coca Cola Park?

I’m going to say it here, the Phantoms are not going to change their name. I’m grasping for something to write in what will probably be the last “off-season” for Lehigh Valley Pro sports in a long time. Just next year the Steelhawks football season will lead into the IronPigs baseball season into the Phantoms Hockey season. We will have pro sports in the LV all year long!

So why would any successful team change a well recognized, successful and long term brand? I don’t know.

Staring at you Reading Phillies. Staring at you.

STEEL OVER NIGHT IN BATTLE OF THE HAWKS

Defense the Difference in Win with Five Turnovers

Bethlehem, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (4-4) are back at .500 on the season after defeating the Knoxville Nighthawks (2-7) 63-47, in the second of three rounds in the battle of the hawks. The Hawks from the Valley now hold a 2-0 series record.

The first half was a back and forth battle between the two teams. The offenses traded touchdowns for most of the half. On the Steelhawk side it was WR/FB Elliott White who got in from 4 yards out and wide receivers Tyrone Collins and Tom Gilson each picking up a touchdown reception from QB Hunter Wanket, who was starting in place of Adam Bednarik who missed the game for personal reasons. Then it was the Steelhawks defense that stepped up; first, creating a fumble that LB Terence Thomas recovered in the end zone, and then DB Stefaun Whitehead recording his first interception as a Steelhawk. The offense capitalized on both turnovers, and Lehigh Valley took a 31-22 lead as the half drew to a close.

The second half played out much like the first half. Each time the Steelhawks would score, the Nighthawks seemed to answer, keeping the game within reach for most of the half. It was again the Steelhawk defense that would create turnovers to give Lehigh Valley the ball back and stop the Nighthawks from countering. DB John Kennedy picked off Knoxville QB Ryan Porter in the third quarter, and the Steelhawks took advantage when Wanket found Collins for his second touchdown of the game on a 35 yard pass.

The teams would trade touchdowns again on consecutive possessions, with White scoring his third touchdown of the game out of the wildcat in the fourth quarter. White would later be named Buca Di Peppo and Countess Communications Player of the Game for his performance in tonight’s game. Lehigh Valley’s defense would come up big once more with under a minute remaining in the game. Forcing Knoxville to fumble into the end zone and recovering the ball, giving the Steelhawks the possession back with 33 seconds left in the game, sealing a 63-47 win.

By scoring 63 points, the Steelhawks have once again achieved the Domino’s 50 point Challenge. Fans can get 50% off any menu priced pizza for the next three days at participating Domino locations in the Lehigh Valley, just use the code SH50.

The Steelhawks will return back home to the Valley this week for their final two home games of the season May 18th and 25th. The game on the 18th is Non-Profit Awareness night and is also a night dedicated to the Race for Adam against the defending champion Albany Panthers. Game time for both games I 7 p.m. inside the Stabler Arena on the campus of Lehigh University.

GAME PREVIEW: STEELHAWKS LOOK TO TAME LIONS

Bethlehem, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (2-4), coming off a series of tough losses, will be battling the Columbus Lions (3-3) when they come to the Valley this Sunday, May 5th for a 4pm game. The game is deemed Health Awareness Night and is presented by St. Luke’s University Health Network. It will also feature a Precious Metal Dance clinic prior to the game, and special performance by all the participants at half time.

The Steelhawks defense needs to find its rhythm again as they face a top scoring offense in Columbus. The Lions are led by QB Marcus Jones, he is their top passer (821 yds, 16 tds) and rusher (108 yds, 6 tds). He has found solid targets in three different receivers, all with more than 20 receptions on the season- Maurice Dupree (36 catches, 601 yds, 12 tds), Jarmon Fortsen (21 catches, 229 yds, 3 tds), and Gerald Gales (20 catches, 279 yds, 8 tds).

Lehigh Valley has been dangerous on offense every week. QB Adam Bednarik (1,275 yds, 22 tds, on 69% completion rate) utilizes all his receiving weapons; all three receivers have more than 300 yds already this year- Tom Gilson (46 catches, 412 yds, 7 tds), Tyrone Collins (30 catches, 318 yds, 8 tds), and Torieal Gibson (27 catches, 399 yds, 5 tds).

Kickoff is slated for 4:05 (EST), this Sunday. Steelhawk 2013 home games will be broadcast on Service Electric TV2 Sports.

The Steelhawks will be on the road in Knoxville for their game next week but then will return back home to the Valley for their final two home games of the season May 18th and 25th. The game on the 18th is Non Profit Awareness night and is also a night dedicated to the Race for Adam.
