I was a little torn tonight. I have to root for my team but it was hard to root for pitcher Brian Gordon to do poorly. I didn’t have to suffer too long… Gordon was only in for 5 innings and pitched beautifully. Thankfully, Pig Pitching held the game close at 0-2 until Brandon Moss tied the game with a 2 run home run. Later, Delwyn Young added a 3 run shot that put the Pigs up 5-2.

Tyson Brummett started the game and allowed 2 runs on 7 hits, striking out 7 and walking none. DeFratus came on and pitched 2.1 innings allowing only 1 hit, no runs and struck out 5. Our Phavorite Phro, Michael Schwimer came on to close out the 9th.

Pigs win by a final score of 5-2.

There were a few flair ups on what sounded like (radio broadcast) really poor umpiring tonight. It seems the crew of Troy Fullwood, Adam Hamari and Derek Crabill was taking a lot of flack from those who differed in opinion. It’s bad when even the home team agrees on bad calls that go for their team. Hope someone is evaluating them/keeping notes on their performance. Of note, SWB Manager Dave Miley ejected arguing a call.

In no particular order…

Vance Worley will return to the IronPigs for a scheduled start on Saturday. He has been great up with the Phillies but to keep him on a pitching schedule, he was sent down to the Pigs. This is actually a pretty smart move. With a few days off for the All Star Break he would have had over a week without a game and also gives Victorino a longer break to rest his injured hand. To correspond to this move, John Mayberry was called up to the Phillies and is expected to fill in for Shane in centerfield as needed.

The Pigs did lose last night in Scranton. I watched part of the game on MiLB Video and have to say some of those plays were tough ones and others they made look tough. It happens now and then and nothing to worry a lot about. It was the 4th of July weekend and I like to relax a little myself. (As you may have noticed by my lack of posting). Tonight the Pigs will face former Pig Brian Gordon in the 2nd game of 2 vs SWB. Really, was anyone surprised the Yankees pushed him to AAA when the other starters came off the DL? I wish he had more of a chance to perform at that level and 2 or 3 games isn’t much of a chance. Here’s hoping he gets back up soon. (I root for Brian, not the Yankees)

I received an email this morning that the pre-sale for Big and Rich/Gretchen Wilson tickets began this morning. Season ticket holders can directly call the IronPig’s office to order. Details from the IronPigs below:

The Field Level pre-sale begins on Tuesday, July 5 at 10 a.m. and concludes on Wednesday, July 6 at 5 p.m. Tickets during the exclusive pre-sale can ONLY be purchased by calling (610) 841-PIGS, in person at the Coca-Cola Park ticket office (business hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) or online at http://www.ironpigsconcertsonline.com. All tickets are priced at $44.50 plus a $6.00 service charge. Tickets for this concert will go on sale to the general public on Saturday, July 9 at 10 a.m. Children 2 and under are free.

This event is Rain or Shine. The gates are scheduled to open at 5:00 p.m. and the show is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

While I am a fan of country music, it’s not in my budget to throw out $50+ on a ticket. Wish I could go and imagine that the cost is inferred by the concert organizers so I won’t complain. That does give me another thought. At $50 a pop, it’s a lot of cash. Maybe not a “blockbuster” concert but how about some “lesser” names? I doubt we would see it with a busy baseball schedule but something to look forward to with the possiblity of an indoor arena. They’re not just for hockey anymore… 🙂

There is also a Season ticket holder MLB All Star game viewing party on July 12th. I attended last year’s season ticket party and it was fun. Makes being a season ticket holder worthwhile:

We are excited to host you at our MLB All-Star Game Ticket Holder Viewing Party on Tuesday, July 12th. This event is exclusive to our valued Ticket Holders, as a thank you for your support of IronPigs Baseball during the 2011 season.

The gates for the party will open at 7:00 p.m. and we will be showing the Major League Baseball All-Star Game on the video board Live from Chase Field in Arizona. The official start time for the All-Star game is still to be determined but expected to start shortly after 8pm.

Some useful information regarding the event:

Complimentary parking is available in all of the Coca-Cola Park lots
Enter the ballpark at either the East Entrance in our AT&T Plaza or the West Entrance (Club & Suite Holder Entrance)
Complimentary Food will be served from our Concession Stands and will feature – Hot Dogs, Soft Pretzels, Popcorn and more! Complimentary Soft Drinks will be provided. Beer will be available for purchase. Food and beverages will be served from 7:00pm to 9:30pm.

There are no assigned seats for the event. To make the evening unique, we have opened the PPL Picnic Patio, PenTeleData Party Porches, the U.S. Lawns Dugout Suites, Club Level, and Field Level seating.

Of course, no IronPigs event would be complete without some special activities. Contests and giveaways will be held throughout the evening!

You will need Viewing Party Tickets for entry into this complimentary event. If you plan to attend, you will need to R.S.V.P. by Thursday, July 7th at 5:00pm to your season ticket representative, by return e-mail to seasontickets@ironpigsbaseball.com or by calling 1-610-841-PIGS ext. 3.

Each ticket holder is granted the number of seats they hold for each game (i.e. Four season tickets = Four party tickets).
Because of the exclusivity of the event, no additional tickets can be added or purchased. Your tickets can be picked up at the IronPigs ticket office, before the event.

Tickets are available during home games starting Monday, June 27th, at the IronPigs ticket windows, from the 3rd inning through the 7th inning.
Should you wish to transfer tickets you will need to provide the ticket office with the name of the individual receiving the tickets.

I found this on the International League website, thought it was interesting to see how long some of these umpires have been around. Some of the names I recognize, usually the ones who have stirred up controversy for the Pigs but also Kelvin Bultron who had us outfield nerds in an uproar thinking his name was “Voltron” when pronounced by Tim Chorones over the PA system. A note from our new friends in Oklahoma. Enjoy!

When I was growing up in Southern Illinois in the ’80s, you could root for one of two teams: the Chicago Cubs or the St. Louis Cardinals. Mom was a Cards fan. Daddy and I were Cub fans.

The first year I was old enough to understand much about the game was the same year a shy young man with a movie-star smile teed off on the best closer in baseball twice on national television, making a name for himself and effectively lighting the spark that sent the Cubbies to the playoffs for the first time in 39 years.

Cub fans know the rules of engagement: You root for that team, you’re gonna get your heart broken. Happens every year. There’s a sort of Zen to it: You just accept as given that you aren’t going to the Series, and then you can relax and enjoy the ride. But when the owners let an incompetent GM drive Ryne Sandberg out of the organization last fall, they took the usual heartbreak to a new level. The Cubs without Ryno? Unacceptable! What were they going to do next — pour Roundup on the ivy?

For the first time in 30 years, there was no “next year.” My heart was well and truly broken, and the winter seemed unusually bleak as I faced the prospect of a spring without a team to root for.

Then Dallas Green coaxed Sandberg back into the Phillies organization, and Ron and I — who love minor-league baseball, and who had been flirting with the idea of exploring the eastern part of the Lincoln Highway for a couple of years anyway — started making tentative plans to head east.

I went to Allentown a Sandberg fan. I came home an IronPigs fan. Noise Nation had everything to do with that. I have fun at Tulsa Drillers games, but … well, they just need more cowbell.

Ron and I are heavily involved in the Route 66 community. We know people who fly in from Japan, Norway, and even Australia every summer to drive the Mother Road, despite the fact that they’ve already seen it. When you ask why they love it so much, invariably, you get the same answer: “It’s the people.”

When we first learned about the ‘Pigs, we wondered how they consistently managed to draw the biggest crowds in Triple-A ball, despite their less-than-stellar record the past three years. After spending four evenings at The Coke last week, we know the answer to that question. It’s the same reason we drive Route 66 every chance we get: It’s the people.

The Pigs took a quick victory over the RedWings tonight and finished a clear 30 minutes before the scheduled fireworks would be sent up. This has happened once before in the past and I was home well before the first shot was fired. Got to check out the new version of the movie True Grit and I have to say I enjoyed it.

The game was nothing much for fireworks though, the game was relatively quiet until the Pigs grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 8th inning and Michael Schwimer came on to close out the game.

Some other notes:

Saw some Twitter activity from Kevin Frandsen who appears to be finished with his suspension. He seems positive about a return but not sure when or where.

There is also a chance that Brian Gordon could start against the IronPigs on either Monday or Tuesday in Scranton. Gordon was sent down to SWB to make room for the returning Bartolo Colon. Come on, like we didn’t see this coming. I can’t say I’ll be rooting for him, or rooting against him. Here’s to the SWB closer blowing the game with a 1-0 Pig win!

The Pigs lost to the Buffalo Bison tonight by a final score of 2 to 4.

Both Mayberry and Kratz homered tonight. Brummett got his second loss.

I haven’t lost faith by any means, but looking at Philadelphia’s roster compared to ours and the team is fielding a patchwork mess right now.

I guess I was correct with the country themed music being an indicator of who would be the major concert at Coca Cola Park this summer!

Just announced, Big & Rich, Cowboy Troy and Gretchen Wilson will play at the park on August 19th!

Xtreme Muzik: The Tour with Big & Rich and Gretchen Wilson along with special guest Cowboy Troy comes rolling into Coca-Cola Park for one night only on Friday, August 19 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Saturday, July 9 at 10 a.m. and can be purchased at the Coca-Cola Park ticket office, online at http://www.IronPigsConcerts.com or by phone at (610) 841-PIGS (7447). Gates will open at 5 p.m. and the action-packed show is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
The debut concert at Coca-Cola Park, The Bob Dylan Show, featuring Bob Dylan & his band, John Mellencamp and Willie Nelson was held on July 14, 2009, and featured a sell-out crowd of over 11,000 fans that was the tour’s top-selling show and sold-out over a month beforehand.

Lehigh Valley IronPigs season ticket holders and marketing partners will be contacted later today in regards to an exclusive presale for the Xtreme Muzik tour at Coca-Cola Park.

All tickets are priced at just $44.50 and give fans the opportunity to watch the Xtreme Muzik tour from the field or any Field Level seat on a first-come, first-serve basis. Reserved seats are available on the Club Level only and are also priced at $44.50, subject to availability. There is a $6 service and handling charge for each ticket purchased.
