Cliff Lee to Start Season on DL?

MLB.COM reported that Cliff Lee has a right lower abdominal strain and has traveled to Seattle for evaluation. Depending on severity, Lee could start the season on the Disabled list.

Lee, who came to the Phillies briefly last season, was traded to Seattle for 3 relatively unproven prospects. I was wondering when this “aha” moment would happen just didn’t think it would happen so soon. Let’s see if this makes the Phillies front office look better to the fans who had dreams of a Super pitching rotation in 2010.

Destination for Mathieson?

I’m going to say we will have Scott Mathieson in the Lehigh Valley bullpen to start the season. Phillies management has repeatedly stated their interest in the reliever and that he just needs more innings under his belt to get back to the Phils roster.

Good news for Pig fans. Mathieson was dominant in Reading last year. We lost a lot of game in 2009 in the 9th inning because of poor late inning efforts. Who knows where the Pigs land if they had a solid closer last season.

First Noise Nation Road Trip of 2010!

We will be heading to Scranton on Sunday April 25th to see the Ironpigs take on the Scranton Yankees!

Game time is 1:05pm and group tickets are $11 each. We are trying to get seats near where the seats were last year along the 1st base line towards the outfield. Well within shouting distance of the right fielder and Ironpig’s bullpen.

Transportation is on your own.

Please email me at editor@lvnoisenation.com for more details.

More Nostalgia / Memories

A few days ago I watched the classic Bad News Bears movie starring Walter Matthau and Tatum Oneil. Thinking back to that time gives you the shivers to think about how times have changed. From a little league coach having kids serve him martinis while driving them around in a convertible without seatbelts to Tanner’s description of the diversity of the team really makes you think… where have those times gone?

Morganna with George Brett during the 79 All Star game as Phillies catcher Bob Boone looks on.

One of my favorite sports mammories, err memories is of Morganna Roberts also known as “The Kissing Bandit.” She would somehow find her way into televised games and run to that team’s star player, planting a big smooch before being escorted off by security.

Max PatkinAnother classic baseball personality, Max Patkin, had his glory years during my childhood. I remember seeing the Clown Prince of Baseball at the Reading Phillies in the mid 80’s. Even then he all over the field entertaining the fans. He passed away in 1999. We have seen his heir to the title, Myron Noodleman, at Coca Cola Park but he just doesn’t compare to Patkin.

Rainbow wigs were fun in the 80's

Think of sports in the 70’s and 80’s and you are likely to think of Rollen Stewart. Stewart showed up at just about every big game in the world wearing a rainbow wig jumping around waving a John 3:16 sign. He always seemed to know the camera angles and literally showed up everywhere. His story ends badly, if you’re interested.. look it up.

Box Scores, Stats, Almanacs – Baseball

With the realization that box scores for spring training usually aren’t published for minor league baseball we find ourselves reaching, looking, seeking information with a ferver that many of us haven’t felt in years. The internet, the baseball fans glorious wealth of data, has made it easy on us. Add in 200 more channels on TV, XM radio and DirecTV’s sports package and there really isn’t anyone longing for sports info.

I get a glint of this feeling when listening to the Ironpig’s Radio Network during away games and tracking through the online gameday application to keep myself content until the next homegame.

Think back 20 or so years ago. We had 3-5 channels on the TV (Depending on which direction the antenna was pointing) and newspapers gave standings and box scores. For me, we had Phillies coverage and Channel 17 had Phillies games broadcast. What if you weren’t a Phillies fan? You only had one chance to see your team play and that was the NBC game of the week on Saturday afternoon. Not too many options.

Baseball cards. How far have they come along and I am delighted to see that they are getting back to their roots in terms of value. In the hayday of collecting, I remember entire shopping malls lined with vendors and displays. I couldn’t have enough time or money to walk the mall and get more than one unopened pack of cards. The before school cards trades, deals arbitrated by Margo the lunch lady and an always present and current baseball card price guide led to many blockbuster trades that make the Ryan Howard/Albert Pujols trade seem insignificant. And the cards themselves. I studied those cards, the stats, the teams, the annual and career numbers, even the corny comments that Topps put on each card.

The Baseball Digest, Almanac and anything published that you could get your hands on was read, re-read and studied at every opportunity. I had a whole table in the basement dedicated to my baseball studies. If I spent half as much time studying schoolwork as I did baseball I would be working for NASA right now.

This morning, as my quest to find minor league box scores at spring training came to a screeching halt, I got that same craving for information that captivated me so many years ago.

Likely 2010 Ironpigs 3/13/2010

Some new info in today.. let’s recap who is still in the running or likely to end up in the Lehigh Valley to start the season.

Outfield
Rich Thompson
John Mayberry Jr.
Chris Duffy
DeWayne Wise
Brad Wilkerson
Freddy Guzman

Thompson and Mayberry look locked in. The last four will battle for a spot either in the LV or a more remote chance of making the Phillies. My money would be on Wilkerson and Wise or Guzman being the 4th.

Infield
Andy Tracy
Tagg Bozied
Eric Campbell
Melvin Dorta
Troy Hanzawa
Gabriel Martinez
Luis Maza
Brandon Pinckney
Patrick Sellers
Brian Stavisky

Other than Tracy, the infield is up for grabs.

Catchers
Paul Hoover
Brian Schneider (Not likely unless Hoover wins the Phil’s backup job)
Tuffy Gosewisch
John Suomi

I’m thinking Hoover and Suomi to start with Gosewisch taking time later in the season. Barring any injuries above or below the Pig’s will get most of their backstop time from Hoover.

Pitcher
Joe Savery
Drew Carpenter
Nate Bump
Ryan Vogelsong
Brandon Duckworth
Kyle Kendrick
Jason Anderson
Joe Bisenius
Alex Concepcion
John Ennis
Brian Mazone
Pat Overholt
Jake Woods
Vance Worley

The pitching situation will be effected by who the Phillies dump back into the minors. If Jamie Moyer is healthy enough to take the #5 starting role, expect Kendrick to return to Coca Cola Park. We should see a lot of up and down reliever moves as the season gets rolling.

Truffle Shuffle Contest in Lakewood

Get ready Goonies fans! The Lakewood Blueclaws have added on to their promotion on July 29th. Not only is it Thirsty Thursday providing $1 beer and soda and 50 cent wings but this night the Blueclaws are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Goonies movie!

From the Blueclaw’s Facebook page:

“It is with great pride that we announce that Chunk (Jeff Cohen) from “The Goonies” will be at FirstEnergy Park July 29th for our 25th anniversary Goonies celebration (and will judge our Truffle Shuffle contest, sign autographs, and pose for pictures)!!!”

Not that Mr. Belding making an appearance in Reading this season wouldn’t be enough, but to have the chance to show off your Truffle Shuffle to the original Chunk? Incredible!

For those too young to remember here is a video:
