The IronPigs dropped a very winnable game last night 2-1.  They managed only six hits, and despite getting help from 2 Chief errors, were 0-10 with runners in scoring position.  It’s a shame, because it was a waste of another nice start from recent call-up David Buchanan.  I didn’t get to see much of him pitching, but the numbers speak for themselves: 6 1/3 IP, 6H, 2 R/ER, 3BB, 3K for a 1.77 ERA at this point.  Jay Johnson gave up a wounded duck on which scored an inherited runner.  JC Ramirez and the now-called-up BJ Rosenberg held things down to give the ‘Pigs a chance.  Ruppy and Gillies each had two hits and were on base with two outs at the end. Gillies has been hitting near .300 since his return from Reading and has his average up to .224.

Playoff Picture:

The IronPigs are 4.5 games back of the Rochester RedWings for the top spot in the International League North, with 18 games to play.  Also ahead of the IronPigs are the recently resurgent Pawtucket RedSox who have won 5 in a row, and are 2.0 games back.  The Buffalo Bisons are 3.5 games back.

In the Wild Card race, Pawtucket is in the lead, with the Tides 1.0 games back and the Bisons 1.5 games back.  The IronPigs are 2.5 games back.

What to cheer for?

Obviously, for the IronPigs to win.  The ‘Cuse has been a bad match-up for the ‘Pigs thus far, but we really need this game tonight.  We’ve got to take at least 3 of 4 from the struggling Rail-U-Pines over the home and home upcoming.

We’d like the teams above us to lose, as well.  We’ve got the tiebreak against Norfolk, but cheering for them to lose is pretty easy.  What about the other IL North teams, though?  What if they play each other?

Well, Buffalo worries me the least.  We’ve got the most head-to-head against them, and will have the opportunity to knock them out. (And, if we can’t, well, we don’t deserve a spot, then.)  We’ve got a couple against Pawtucket, too, and we’ve played them very very well.  I’ve been directing my negative cheering mostly towards Rochester.

Replay

“The [Replay] is in charge of finding treasure in the dark”

-“The Reflex” Duran Duran

..

One thing I forgot to mention in the previous post:  It seems video replays are up on the big board after most significant game plays.  It’s really nice.  We enjoyed this when we visited Scranton in July.

Does anyone know the genesis of this?  Is it our friend Ryan and SECTV?  The folks in the booth?

In any case, thanks.  I enjoy it and it adds to the big-league feel of the park.

..

As long as I’m handing out compliments:  The field design was nice, too.  The grounds crew had a vote on SpaceBook, and the most complex design won.  The infield looked great!  Kudos!

Cloyd Deals; Pigs Fly

“Just when I thought I was out, they pull me BACK IN!”

– The Godfather, Part 3

..

Hi, My name’s Kram, and I’ve got an IronPigs problem…

<<HI KRAM!>>

..

I’ve been ready to check out on this IronPigs team a couple times over the past month.  It’s easier when I’m not at the park–and better for me emotionally if I’m not living and dying with my minor league team.  After winning three out of four (and it should have been four of four) in Gwinnett and with the return home, I talked myself back into it.  Last night stoked the fire.  I’ve only got one good arm, but I’ve managed to pull myself back onto the bandwagon.

..

About Last Night

Tyler Cloyd was the story in the 4-1 ‘Pigs win.  Complete game.  Only three hits.  Only one walk.  Only one run.  116 pitches.  80 strikes.  7 strikeouts.  And a key bunt, to boot.  With John Lannan’s injury last night in Philly (knee, probably out for the year) it was easy to connect the dots and put Tyler back on the Phillies in five days.  We’ll see, of course.  But if this is the last of Tyler Cloyd at Coca Cola Park, let me be the first to say, “It’s been a great ride.  Thank you.  And, best of luck.”  And if he remains, then it feels really good to have him anchor the rotation for the stretch run.  He’s a class act.  He’s overcome the adversity he faced earlier this season, and returned to form–or better.  I’m happy to call myself a fan of his.

Pete Orr–another class act–played a key role in the win as well.  He had several nice plays at 2B, and a key “hustle” double which lead to a run.  Here’s an excellent piece by our friend Chuck Hixson at PhillyBaseballInsider.com (follow him on Twitter at: @PHLBaseballNsdr): http://phillybaseballinsider.com/?p=942

He talks about Pete Orr and Tyler Cloyd, trying to get back to the Big Leagues.

The Halladay start with GCL Phillies tonight is interesting too, for it may mean he takes Lannan’s spot on Tuesday versus Colorado,  rather than Cloyd.  Or, it may mean a rehab with us on Tuesday.  We’ll see.  God forbid, no setbacks.

..

Tonight, Tonight, Tonight

David Buchanan’s Coca Cola Park debut.  The 24yo Right Hander has been nothing short of excellent in his first two AAA starts.  First he shut down Scranton in Moosic, then he continued it on the road in Gwinnett.  He’s now 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA in AAA.  I look forward to seeing him pitch tonight!

..

On Tap:

Horn and Bell staff will be out in force at tomorrow’s game with some special coverage.  Stay tuned.  A couple of us may also make the run up to Moosic for Saturday’s game.  I’ve still got a post on the way from our last trip up there.  Go Pigs!

See you at the park,

Three-Set with the ‘Cuse Starts Tonight

“It’s been a long time since I rock and rolled,
It’s been a long time since I did the Stroll.
Ooh, let me get it back, let me get it back,
Let me get it back, baby, where I come from. “

–Led Zeppelin

..

It feels kinda like opening day today.  Yeah, but warmer.  I missed the Rochester series because I was out of town, so I haven’t been at the Coke since Sunday, July 21–the tailgate day.

Not a ton has changed, though.  A couple blips on the roster.  The PawSox continue to tank, and the ‘Pigs remain a few games back of the division as well as the wild card.  The starting rotation is really pretty good–even veteran Tommy Cochran had a nice start on getaway day in Gwinnett.  Cloyd, Buchanan and Smith, the starters for this series, have all been strong.  Young Morgan is back, and pitching fairly well.  The bull pen, however, has been less strong.  There have been some good outings, to be sure.  But, some missed opportunities (for wins), too.   The hitting’s been pretty good.  Overbeck and Fields have been holding down the middle of the order quite nicely, and Susdorf is no slouch taking over from Asche in the three spot.  Tyson Gillies continues to gain acceptance–and make things happen on  the base paths.  Cesar Hernandez is getting healthy.

So I’m saying there’s a chance.  We can look at match-ups and whatnot all we want, but the fact is, the IronPigs have to go out and win some ball games.  Some of the weaker teams might get hot.  Some of the stronger teams may lose players and begin doing poorly.  The IronPigs have the opportunity to take care of business.  No, the Phillies won’t be helping us (much).  But maybe they’ll leave us alone.  Perhaps they’ll give us a Halladay start on rehab.

(Aside: Halladay is scheduled to pitch Thursday in Clearwater for the GCL rookie-league Phils.  If everything goes OK, his next turn would be Tuesday August 20, when the ‘Pigs are home versus the RailFrogs.  Reading is in Altoona that day.  I’d assume the Phillies would want him to face more advanced hitters the second time out.  But, you never know.  Also, I loved Halladay’s quote about coming back, and about rehab starts.  He said something to the effect:  “I don’t want to just come back to pitch.  I want to pitch to win.  And I don’t just mean for the Phillies, but in my rehab starts as well.”  That wasn’t the exact quote, but it was my take on it.  The guy’s an incredible competitor; I’d love to have him for a game…)

And the other teams have to play games, too.  Sometimes, against each other.  The opportunity is there.  Let’s go out and cheer the team to some home wins and leave it all out in the stadium for 2013.

IronPig Playoff Hopes… 8-10-2013

As the Pigs are chopping down the Braves for the second day in a row I thought I’d take a look at how the IronPig’s playoff chances REALLY look.

Ask the ticket office and they’ll tell you “They’re Great! Get your tickets now!”

Ask a Phillies fan and they’ll say, “Go Eagles!”

Ask me, well I’ll try to give a more thought out answer.

The IronPigs will have 22 games left.

2 more in Gwinnett. Gwinnett is in last place in the South division and with a loss tonight will be statistically eliminated from the playoffs.

Pigs SHOULD take both. 2 wins, 0 losses (of the 22 games remaining)

3 against Syracuse at home. Syracuse is in last place of the North division. The Cheifs should not be taken lightly as the Pigs have only managed to win 4 of 9 games against them this season with the home record (2-3) slightly not as bad as the away record (2-6). Fear not though, this does not seem to be the same Syracuse team we saw earlier this year.

Pigs will likely take one. 3 wins, 2 losses (of the 22)

Next up is a split series with the SWB Railriders. 2 home, 2 away. They then follow up with two more games in SWB the week after and two more at Coca Cola Park. This is a big series and as much as I’d love to see IronPig General Manager sing… I want the Pigs to win these games.

This one could go either way. Who ever is hot will take 6 of 8.

I’m thinking positively and saying Pigs take 4. 9 wins, 4 losses.

Then we see seven straight games against Buffalo. First 4 in Buffalo, the last 3 in Coca Cola Park. The Bison are tearing up the competition lately. Even if the Pigs are hot, they will have a tough fight.

I’ll say the Pigs take at least 3. 12 wins, 8 losses.

The last two games of the season at CCP will be against Pawtucket. The Pawsox spent a good portion of this season as leader of the North division but have plummeted of late. Only .5 games ahead of the IronPigs I’m sure they will be fighting hard to keep or gain an edge in a playoff race.

My call is a split. 12 wins, 10 losses.

That would leave the IronPigs with a 74 win 70 loss record.

****

Realistically, there are a lot of things that could affect the outcome of the season. Teams get hot, teams get cold. Players get hurt, called up, released, instructed to change something that doesn’t prove successful. A hot team usually beats a better team. All those old baseball theories.

From my viewpoint a just over .500 record won’t take the division nor the Wild Card. If there was less teams involved in the hunt I’d speak differently but with needing Rochester, Buffalo and Pawtucket to crap out it would take a lot of help from other teams. For the Wild Card add in Norfolk and it’s a party.

Do I want them to make it? YES!

Do I think they have what it takes to make it? Absolutely.

Do I think all the cards will fall together and IL President Randy Mobley will present the Governor’s Cup to the IronPigs in front of their home crowd? Sure, but I’m a fan. I always think my team will win…

Look Out for the Quiet Ones…

We’ve been kind of quiet here on the Horn & Bell this week.

Someone once told me that I shouldn’t worry about chatty folks but to “Look out for the quiet ones, they are up to something.”

Well…

We’re up to something!

We’re up to something good!

Ebay has been involved. A seamstress has been involved. Many hours of silence bringing this together, just for you!

It won’t be done overnight and you’ll be the first to witness its debut so stay tuned!

Hats off to Ethan Martin for his first MLB win today as well as Cody Asche for his first MLB home run!

Oink! Screech! Roll on!

Martin & Asche Both Get the Call – Stroganoff or Rivets?

We have a running gag with this season’s IronPigs about the power of eating stroganoff at our favorite deli. Word has it, the stuff does wonders for hitters. Could the same be the same for Philly Pretzel Rivets?

What’s Best for Phillipe Aumont?

Yesterday I wrote that the bubble was about to burst and last night, it did.

I had my radio tuned to Pigs Radio, the IronPigs had a 4-0 lead, Tyler Henson had already hit two home runs in his Triple A debut, the dog was asleep next to me and soon Jon Schaeffer’s voice sent me to dream land.

I woke up this morning and was surprised to find twitter abuzz with the collapse that led to the Pigs 4-5 loss mainly due to the efforts of the bullpen.

While Aumont took the loss, he wasn’t alone in this effort but I want to take a moment and think about Phillipe Aumont.

We got Phillipe from the Mariners as part of a trade. Word on him back then was the Mariners had tried him as a starter and were working on converting him to a reliever/closer type. The Phillies so far have tried both versions as well. Aumont has had some good moments and some bad. Lately, we’ve seen more bad.

Really, I try not to chuckle when he comes into the game and the club level is chalking up the unofficial over/under line for passed balls and/or wild pitches. Pitch control has not been friendly to him of late.

What would be the best for Phillipe Aumont?

I’m not saying what would be the best for the IronPigs… that would be sending him to Reading.

I’m not saying what would be best for the Phillies… that would be trying to send him off as part of a trade.

I’m saying what would be best for Phillipe Aumont.

In my opinion, (Take that for what it’s worth), the best thing for him would be a new start in a new town with different coaches. (I didn’t say better, I said different)

We could look at examples of Jason Grilli or Brandon Moss who both thrived after leaving the IronPigs and the Phillies’ organization but they also thrived here. I’m talking Ryan Vogelsong.

When Vogelsong was an IronPig in 2010, he hadn’t pitched in the majors since 2006. He ended up pitching in 25 games with a 2-5 record before the Phillies sent him on his way.

Next stop San Francisco.

In 2011 Vogelsong went 13-7 for the Giants.

In 2012 Vogelsong went 14-9 and won a World Series for the Giants, the winning pitcher of Game 3.

Did Ryan Vogelsong wake up one morning in 2011 and say, “I’m just going to be better, much much better!”? No.

He had help. Everyone needs help now and then.

I truly believe Phillipe Aumont needs a fresh start. He needs an open mind, someone to trust, someone who can take him aside and allow him to defeat those control demons. Someone who will not only allow but push him to thrive.

He’s hit a wall with the Phillies’ organization and I really believe he would thrive with a change.

What do you think?

State of the IronPigs – The Bubble is Passing

It’s getting to the point of the IronPig’s season where the long fought season will culminate in a large bubble being burst; Whether it is a burp or otherwise remains to be seen.

The IronPigs are currently in 4th place in the IL North division trailing division leader Rochester by 4.5 games. Not a huge margin but between them and the top spot are Pawtucket (1 game back) and Buffalo (3.5 games back). Glimpsing at the Wild Card spot the other divisions have Norfolk, Charlotte and even Columbus in the hunt.

Starting off with the South & West division… they are pretty much decided. While stranger things have happened in Triple-A ball late in the season with the trade deadline looming, parent team injuries and late season call ups, Durham has a 13.5 game lead over the rest of the South division and Indianapolis is 9 games up in the West.

That leaves us to presume that the IL North will be the pennant chase to watch!

As mentioned by IronPig’s radio legend Matt Provence this week, the IronPigs hold an overall losing record against the IL North. Their only winning record against an IL North team, and much to the chagrin of our dear friend and Pawsox blogger @PawsoxHeavy, is against Pawtucket. The key to the Pig’s season… 26 of their remaining 34 games are facing IL North opponents. The Pigs need to win, the other need to lose. Simple as that right?

Not so simple in my eyes.

The Phillies have all but announced that they will be “Sellers.” As disgruntled fans, players and management alike have been calling for. This means we will probably see trades. Big names go but not so big names get thrown in the mix. While we won’t likely lose prospects as we would in “Buying mode” the Pigs season could tremendously be impacted by a Phillies move or moves.

Remember when Carlos Carrasco walked 150 feet from Coca Cola Park’s Home Dugout to the Away dugout after being part of a trade? Yeah, that’s a momentum shift. Could we lose guys like Overbeck, Asche or the veteran bat of Josh Fields? Anything is possible. With no word on Dom Brown return from the DL, we could lose Susdorf for a significant amount of time as we did Ruf when Ryan Howard went down. (Don’t get me wrong, I am real happy for these guys getting promoted but we’re talking IronPigs here)

In my eyes, we won’t see anything tremendous happen in the fielding positions. If Carlos Ruiz is dealt, we’ve got catcher’s galore and I don’t see Rupp being advanced too early. I also don’t see Overbeck being picked over other infielder and I don’t see them rushing Asche. Expect Galvis to get the roster expansion callup, possibly Fields and Hernandez as well.

Pitching is another story. Roy Halladay is pitching from a mound but if the season isn’t playoff bound I wouldn’t expect him back, nor Pettibone back to the Pigs. Tyler Cloyd has come around with a couple good outings in a row and could see some time (even in the bullpen) later in the year. *If needed.

Pitching. So much to think about pitching. The IronPig and Phillie’s bullpens, well they’ve had their good moments and their bad. I’ll give you my own personal thoughts on that.

I’ve been mulling this over for a couple months now and I have been hesitant to write about it as:

1. I am not a professional baseball player. By no means am I an expert.

2. I am not a professional baseball coach. By no means do I claim to be.

3. These guys are working hard. This is their job.

The below is my personal, half-wit impression on why the IronPig’s bullpen has struggled at Lehigh Valley and when they move up to the Phillies.

Let’s start with a story. Picture a small yet exciting little league ball park in Topton, PA. The star catcher (I couldn’t run and the equipment fit) comes to the plate. Bases loaded, no outs. I use the aluminum bat to knock the dirt from my cleats. At this point I still could not pronounce aluminum correctly. I spit on my hands, rub it into the black electrical tape wrapped around the handle on the bat. I look to my 3rd base coach who is furiously running through signs. I hope I remember all of them and actually see them. I didn’t see a sign, I hope I didn’t miss anything important. Worriedly, I step into the batters box only to hear the 1st base coach yell “TIME!” He crosses over to the 3rd base coach. They argue. They reach an agreement and I get a new set of signs. I confidently step back in the batter’s box only to hear “TIME!” called again. The coaches convene and call me over.

“Danny, can you bunt?”

“HE Shouldn’t be BUNTING!”

“I’m the manager, I make the calls”

“He’s a power hitter”

“He’s a line drive hitter”

“Bunt Danny, Bunt”

“No, don’t bunt.. swing away”

They give each other a look, the ump calls me back to bat and there I stand. 10 years old. Making the biggest decision of my baseball career to that point. Who do I listen to? Coach #1 who wants me to bunt? Coach #2 who wants me to swing away? (Coach #2 bought us hot dogs after the game.. guess who won out using my 10 yr old’s logic?)

My point is… we’ve had a lot of pitching coach changes. The IronPigs had Rod Nichols up until this year when promoted to the Phillies. In came Ray Burris. Both excellent and accomplished pitchers and coaches. Are they thinking on the same lines though?

First point is Aumont. Aumont made a statement earlier in the season, to paraphrase, that one level (of the organization) is telling him to do one thing and another is telling him something different. He was respectful but frustrated.

Next, you have Friend get demoted to Reading only to come back soon after touting his AA pitching coach for solving his problems.

Tyler Cloyd’s entire season. Last year’s Cinderella story of the International League wasn’t supposed to be in AAA until a suspension pushed him to be the opening day starter for the Pigs resulting in near perfection in that game and an IL Pitcher of the year award. Beginning the season at Lehigh Valley, it became obvious someone or something had been working to get him to change or modify his efforts.

From these three points you may think I am focusing the “reasons” onto the Lehigh Valley pitching coach, and I am not. Several different coaches are involved and what I believe is happening is that they have different theories on pitching, on technique and on strategy. Even if it is a minor delivery change or pitch selection. Throw the fastball more. Throw the cutter more. Don’t throw 0-2 count curveballs. Then to hear something completely different from another coach.

My advice to the Phillies organization (which might reveal my inner nerd), as far as pitching coaches.. there can only be one. One overall effort to develop and advance these pitchers. Two or three conflicting sets of instructions will only serve to confuse and frustrate the staff and do you really want that pitcher to decide who he’s going to follow? Do you want the fate of his career leaning towards whoever is buying him a hot dog after the game?

What do you think IronPig and Phillies fans? Will it be a burp, a hiccup or something worse?

Allentown’s Lepchenko Falls Short

Allentown’s own Varvara Lepchenko stepped up in the quarterfinals late tonight to face #4 in the world Agnieszka Radwanska. Lepchenko was looking to have a strong showing as she had been defeated in 3 previous meetings with Radwanska. Currently ranked #40 by the WTA, Varvara’s career high ranking was #19 achieved in October 2012.

The first set started out great for Lepchenko as she jumped to an early 2-0 lead but unforced errors quickly put her behind 4-2. She fought hard taking Radwanska into tie breakers but ended up losing 7-6.

In the second set Lepchenko dominated, just as she did in the first set, but without as many unforced errors. She rolled to a 6-3 victory!

The third and deciding set started out with both breaking serve and moving to a 1-1 tie. Both came back to hold making it 2-2. Both broke serve making it 3-3. Unfortunately Lepchenko’s unforced errors returned falling behind 3-5 and lost 3-6.

Final line: 6-7, 6-3, 3-6.

With that said, when the #40 player pushes the #4 player as far as Lepchenko challenged Radwanska tonight.. it’s impressive. Without a handful of unforced errors Varvara is in the Semi-finals.

One other thing I noticed was a LOT of bad calls. Fortunately tennis allows players to challenge calls. I would say at least 10 calls were reversed upon challenging however, it simply reveals a great backup system to reduce human error. Well done tennis and well done Varvara! You did good and we are proud!
