The Fastest Man in Baseball

Beginning Saturday evening, the Louisville Bats will be the opponents of the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs in 8 of their next 12 games.  Much of the success of the Louisville Bats this year has to be credited to their pitching staff which has the 2nd best team ERA in the International League.  But, the Bats currently have the worst hitting team in the International League with their team batting average at .201,  just barely above the Mendoza line.   Outfielder Felix Perez (.275) is the only player hitting over .240 with old friend Jason Donald next at .238.  Louisville has scored the fewest runs, they have the fewest hits, the fewest RBI’s, the lowest on base percentage and the lowest slugging percentage in the league.  However, even with the poor team offensive numbers, they can score runs in other ways, mainly because of one man.

At the top of their batting order is 22 year old switch hitting outfielder Billy Hamilton, the #1 prospect in the Cincinnati Reds organization.  In case you don’t know him, Billy Hamilton was the 2nd round draft pick (57th overall) of the Cincinnati Reds in the 2009 player draft.  He began last season playing in the California League where he hit .323 and stole an amazing 104 bases in just 82 games.  But he didn’t stop there.  He was promoted to the AA Southern League where he played in 50 more games.  In those 50 games he hit .286 and stole an additional 51 bases giving him a 2012 stolen base total of 155 in 132 games.  Everyone has heard the baseball phrase, “a walk is as good as a hit”, but in the case of Billy Hamilton, quite often a walk will turn into a triple because he is going to run and he is going to run often.

It could be advantageous to the Ironpigs that they are facing Louisville while they are in the midst of a team hitting slump.   The lack of hitting has also affected Billy Hamilton as he is hitting just .213 in 75 at bats this year, but even with the low average he still has stolen 14 bases in 15 attempts this year which easily tops the International League in both categories.

I have mixed feeling going into the upcoming 8 games against Louisville.  As an Ironpigs fan I always want to see our team win.  But at the same time, as a baseball fan, I want to see Billy Hamilton run.  Maybe we can win and throw him out a few times when he tries to steal.  That would be perfect.

Ruiz to Rehab in Reading Friday & Saturday!

From Reading’s media dept:

Ruiz will join the Fightin Phils on Friday and Saturday as part of his rehab assignment

READING, Pa.—Philadelphia Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz will join the Reading Fightin Phils on Major League rehab assignment Friday and Saturday when the team returns home after a seven-game homestand to face the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Toronto Blue Jays). Friday’s game at FirstEnergy Stadium starts at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday’s game begins at 6:05 p.m.

Ruiz is currently in the midst of a 25-game suspension after testing positive for a banned substance during the offseason. Prior to playing Reading on Friday and Saturday, Ruiz is scheduled to play a pair of games with the Clearwater Threshers (A+) tonight and Wednesday. He can join the Phillies on Sunday when they face the New York Mets at Citi Field.

The catcher will be making his first trip back to Reading since playing with the club from 2003-2004. During his 2004 season in Baseballtown, Ruiz hit 17 home runs and drove in 50 runs while hitting .284. His home run total was second among Eastern League catchers (Eli Whiteside, Bowie, 18).

Last season, the Panamanian earned his first All-Star selection and set career highs in hits (121), doubles (32), home runs (16), RBIs (68), runs (56), extra-base hits (48), and total bases (201). He also hit .325 and caught a career-high 21 of 85 potential base stealers.

Signed as an amateur free agent by Philadelphia in 1998, Ruiz started every postseason game in 2008 at catcher and helped the Phillies go on to win their second World Series in team history.

Tickets for both Friday and Saturday’s games at FirstEnergy Stadium are available by visiting Fightins.com, calling the Fightin Phils Ticket Office at 610-370-BALL, or by visiting the Fightin Phils Ticket Office in person at FirstEnergy Stadium. Both games will feature a post-game fireworks show thanks to All Star Distributing/Labatt Blue on the 26th and Carpenter Technology Corp. on the 27th.

TV was on Mute – Radio was On. IronPigs are Homesick

Before we look at this morning’s game I want to start with this…

Pig fans who don’t listen to the IronPig’s radio game broadcast are missing out. Matt Provence and Jon Schaeffer are on 1320 and 1230 AM doling out the play by play and commentary for every IronPigs game.

Honestly, I was excited to see our friends get National Media Attention with a game airing live on the MLB Network this morning. A high class baseball production, in HD, far exceeding many minor league teams. I subscribed to MiLB TV several years and many of those teams cannot even be viewed in the same category as Service Electric when it comes to its baseball programming.

But.. BUT.. I always mute the TV because I prefer the radio.

I think others do as well.

Each game I wait anxiously for the Trivia question. I prep myself on the PC (Or phone if at CCP). Baseball reference’s website is open to the International league historical stats. A Google search window is open. The email is prepped and ready and waiting for the answer to be typed in and sent. I’m listening to the radio because it is a good 30-45 seconds ahead of the online streaming audio. Sounds like a lot right?

Usually around the 3rd or 4th inning Matt Provence will send the ever increasingly difficult trivia question out.

Then the frantic madness begins.

Find the answer online. Type it in. Click Send. Sigh of relief and then wait.

Sometime around the 7th or 8th inning the answer, and winner, are announced.

I usually have my answer out within 5 seconds. I’ve won once this season so far. Most of my answers are correct.

The radio@ironpigsbaseball.com mailbox must be overflowing in that insane minute of submissions but only the first correct answer wins.

Pigs Radio hasn’t replaced those great memories of Harry and Richie from my childhood but it’s close.
****

The IronPigs must be happy to jump on the wagon train west this afternoon. They head to Indianapolis for 4 games, then to Louisville for 4 before returning back to Coca Cola Park for identical series to start off May. (Wonder if they’ll carpool)

I am looking forward to May. It will signify the IronPigs return home to CCP but also a fresh start at CCP.

IronPig’s road record to date: 5 wins 2 losses

IronPig’s home record to date: 2 wins 8 losses

They are struggling at home. No doubt.

Today’s game was no different.

Starter Tyler Cloyd looked great in the first two innings but faltered in the 3rd allowing 4 runs on a bunch of singles. He allowed 2 more runs in the 6th and his final line of 6 innings, 6 runs on 9 hits. Tyler struck out 4 and walked 3.

Some excitement in the 9th inning. Manager Dave Brundage earned his first ejection of the season arguing a very questionable balk call in the top of the ninth. Steve Lerud followed suit and left the game as well. Pigs Radio did note that the IL Umpire evaluator was in attendance at this game and has a first hand view of the play in question. Punishments probably await them.

The Pigs certainly hit the ball well today but fighting high winds and bad luck, their 11 hits only combined for 2 runs.

Final Score: Bison 8 – IronPigs 2

Weekend Roundup – 4/22/2013

This weekend… well the weather was nice.

The Pigs lost both sides of a double header Saturday.

The Steelhawks lost a heartbreaker by 2 points thanks to a fumbled snap late in the game.

The Pigs topped off Sunday with another loss.

Not a great weekend.

Jonathan Pettibone was called up to the Phillies and Joe Savery was optioned back to Lehigh Valley.

Heard some rumblings that Kratz might return when Carlos Ruiz’s suspension is over. (One of those options left vs waivers things)

Today’s 10:35 game start will be aired live on the MLB Network.

Other than that, enjoy some fun photos from the weekend.

Pigs Drop a Pair

The cold breeze wasn’t enough to cool off the hot-hitting Buffalo Bison, and the home-town ‘Pigs lost both ends of an evening doubleheader.

As we whittle away at the remaining starters who could join Philadelphia for Monday evening’s start against Pittsburgh, Ethan Martin took the mound and eliminated himself from contention.  Of course, he was eliminated by virtue of starting pitching, but he struggled with his control as well.  That was the “book” on Ethan; he’s got great “stuff” but will sometimes suffer if he can’t locate the pitches properly.  This seemed to be the case Saturday in the early game, as many of his off-speed offerings were wild-high.  And it wasn’t just that the high off-speed pitches were there to hit, it was that they were so obviously high that the Bison hitters were able to lay off them and wait for a fastball in the strike zone to swing at.  Martin was able to throw the heater for a strike, but didn’t have the benefit of off-balance hitters, and they made him pay.  He surrendered five hits and four free-passes (plus a hit batsman) which lead to seven runs, all earned.  Justin Friend relieved him and allowed two inherited runners to score, plus one of his own over two innings.

Ethan seemed to be in good spirits when we met him briefly after the second game.  I would expect the young starter will continue to work on his craft and his day to be called up to help Philadelphia will come soon enough.

The ‘Pigs were able to get some hits, draw some walks, and have some chances–but just weren’t able to capitalize on them.  Cody Overbeck went 2/3 with 2 RBI on a homer and a double, but was thrown out at the plate.  Darrin Ruf struck out twice on the big looping curves from former ‘Pig Dave Bush to leave four on base.  Cody Asche went 2/3 to bring his average up to .260 on the season.

Nevertheless, the Home Team was able to bring the tying run to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom-half of the final-inning seventh in the form of outfielder Leandro Castro.  I have to say I’ve been impressed with the young outfielder thus far this season.  But had I been the manager, I probably would have inserted Josh Fields as a pinch-hitter and told him to either hit a grand-slam or strike out trying.  Brundage sent Castro up, though, and he put a charge into a 2-1 pitch.  It wasn’t quite high enough to get into the wind stream, and was caught at the warning track in left-center.  It brought 9,000 of us at Coca Cola Park to our feet, though.  Hats off to Leandro for giving it his best!

The second game began with spot-starter Zach Miner on the mound.  While starter BJ Rosenberg was on normal rest to have started the game, it was pointed out on the radio broadcast the other day that if a “bullpen” day is in order, it might be easier to have it in a seven-inning game rather than a nine-inning game.  Miner started shaky, yielding a few walks before getting a pep-talk from pitching coach Ray Burris in the first inning with the bases loaded and no outs.  Whatever the pitching guru said to Zach, it worked.  He extracted himself from the situation with a strikeout, a pop-up and a come-backer.  He then went on to pitch two more innings of no-hit ball.  Justin De Fratus then came in for innings four and five and scattered three hits and two walks to go along with three strikeouts, but allowed no runs as the IronPigs nursed a 1-0 lead.  Gillies had drawn a walk, stolen second, and easily scored on a Cesar Hernandez single.

The red-hot Bisons don’t go away that easily, though.  While the two runs surrendered by reliever Mike Stutes were listed as “earned” it sure didn’t feel that way as the ‘Pigs worked their way up to four errors in the shortened game.  Jake Diekman allowed an inherited runner to score as he pitched for the last out in the top of the seventh.

Once again, the ‘Pigs had a chance in the home half:  they had runners on second and third–enough to walk off down 2-1–and the mighty Cesar couldn’t come through.

Alas, it wasn’t meant to be on the clear and blustery evening, but our young club showed that they could play with experienced and talented AAA players from the first-place Blue Jays’ farm team.

Once again, heightened security was present at the park as bags were inspected and officers discretely patrolled the park.  “Sweet Caroline” made an appearance and the 9,000 in attendance enjoyed the evening.  Many left after the first game, but as always, faithful were on hand until the last out was made 14 innings later.  Quality glass pint glasses with John Mayberry Jr.’s likeness were distributed, and folks with an eye on Philadelphia lamented Cliff Lee’s difficult night.  I was following the SteelHawks game via Twitter updates, and was disappointed to learn of another narrow loss in a very high-scoring game.

But today’s another day.  BJ Rosenberg is set to take the mound in an afternoon game and the sun is out.  Pending a change, I’d guess Tyler Cloyd–now the scheduled Monday starter–will be called to Philadelphia with Jon Pettibone moving up to take the Monday AM-start in Allentown on regular rest.  Perhaps Tom Cochran will move up from Reading to take Cloyd’s spot.  But we shall see.

It’s dog day today, and knit caps will be distributed to the first 3,000 adult humans.  The Bisons don’t have a projected starter, so perhaps we can get a win from them.

Put on your Sunday vests.  Put on your powder blues.  Let’s get out there and show why we’re the best fans in the MiLB.

See you at the park,

@Kram209

IronPigs 2nd Consecutive Game Postponed – Excessive Wetness

Amid heightened security at Coca-Cola Park, Friday night’s game between the Lehigh Valley IronPigs and the Buffalo Bisons at Coca-Cola Park was postponed due to rain and impending weather. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, April 20, with an updated start time of 5:35 p.m.

I ran into IronPigs GM Kurt Landes and thanked him for the increased security at the entry gates –  I noticed every bag being thoroughly checked. He replied “You’re welcome, it’s the right thing to do” and despite whatever your personal feelings may be on the tragedy in Boston, GM Landes is absolutely correct by simply saying it’s the right thing to do. First class are the words that come to mind and what keeps this season ticket holder and many others coming back for every game!

“Please note that all gates open at 4:30 p.m. for Saturday’s contest.  Each of the doubleheader games are scheduled for seven innings and only one ticket is needed to attend both games.  Tonight’s Friday Night Fireworks show presented by Giant will be rescheduled (date TBD).”

Saturday is John Mayberry Commemorative Pint Glass Giveaway day presented by East Stroudsburg University for the first 3000 adults 18-and-over.  It important to get there early if you don’t want to miss out on this giveaway as there were a number of people in line Friday night to exchange their tickets. The weather appears decent enough on Saturday to have a spillover of fans from Friday’s postponement.

“The first 3,000 fans 18 and older will receive John Mayberry commemorative pint glasses presented by East Stroudsburg University as part of Saturday’s 5:35 p.m. twin bill. A fan favorite during his time in the Lehigh Valley, Mayberry trails only Andy Tracy as the IronPigs all-time home run king.

Saturday’s game also features an authentic road jersey auction, with proceeds benefitting IronPigs Charities.  IronPigs fans can bid on their favorite player’s jerseys from anywhere with the easy-to-use Qtego service that allows fans to place bids, receive notifications when outbid and check the status of their item via text messages on their mobile phones.  Fans without texting access can even call in their bid after registering their phone at Coca-Cola Park. Register your phone from anywhere in the U.S. by texting “Pigs” to 79230. Detailed instructions on how to place your bid will be made available at ironpigsbaseball.com.

Winning bidders will have the opportunity to go on the field immediately following the game to have their jersey autographed. Bidders not in attendance at Coca-Cola Park can either pick up their signed jersey at a later date or have it mailed directly to them.”

(all quoted sections from http://www.ironpigsbaseball.com)

Hopefully everyone made it home safely since the drive home was certainly treacherous at times and we’ll see you at the Park on Saturday!
