The Herd is Coming To Town

The Buffalo Bison, newly affiliated with the Toronto Blue Jays, come to the Lehigh Valley fresh off a 27 run/29 hit game vs. the Syracuse Chiefs on Thursday.   They are the top hitting team in the league with an amazing team batting average of .333, a team on base percentage of .406, a slugging percentage of .531 and an OPS of .937.  They also lead the International League in home runs with 16, runs scored (85) and RBIs (82).  That averages out to 7 runs a game.   Those numbers sound more like a slow pitch softball team than a professional AAA baseball squad.

Their #1 catcher is 26 year old LH hitting Josh Thole.  The former Mets backstop was traded to Toronto in the deal that sent Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey north of the border.   He had 4 hits in the landslide win on Thursday, raising his season batting average to .393 with an OBP of .485.  He has 8 RBIs this year and he is backed up by veteran catcher Mike Nickeas.

At first base the Bisons have old Ironpigs nemesis Mauro Gomez.  Gomez is hitting .364 and 6 of his 8 hits this year have been for extra bases (3 doubles and 3 home runs).  Also playing first base is veteran Luis Jimenez.  Luis played for Tacoma in the PCL last year and after 12 games with Buffalo this year he is hitting .353 with 3 home runs and 13 RBI, thanks mainly to a 5 hit game on Thursday with a HR and 8 RBIs.

Things don’t get any easier at second base as leadoff hitter Jim Negrych comes to the Lehigh Valley with a .515 batting average and 2 HR.  He has at least 1 hit in every game he has played this year.  Mike McCoy and Eugenio Velez are the utility guys and can play just about anywhere on the field.  Velez is hitting .344 with 2 HR while McCoy is chugging along with a .261 average.

Veteran Andy LaRoche is at third base and the veteran RH hitter has had his share of big hits against the Ironpigs while wearing a Pawtucket uniform.  Andy hit his 4th HR of the 2013 season on Thursday and comes to the Lehigh Valley with a .279 average and 11 RBI.   25 year old Ryan Goins is the primary shortstop for Buffalo and he is hitting a solid .314.  He doesn’t draw walks but he doesn’t strike out much either.  Facing right handed pitching, his batting average is nearly 100 points higher than it is against lefties.  He is rated the 18th best prospect in the Blue Jays farm system.  Shortstop Munenori Kawasaki recently got the call to the big leagues when Jose Reyes had to be placed on the DL.

In the outfield, the mighty Bison have veteran Ryan Langerhans to go with youngsters Moises Sierra and former highly touted Phillies farmhand Anthony Gose.   The left-handed hitting Langerhans hit is first 2 homeruns of 2013 on Thursday and upped his batting average to .333.   The 230 pound right handed hitting Sierra had 6 hits in Thursday’s slugfest which raised his batting average to .395.  Speedster Anthony Gose checks in with a .289 average and has only 2 stolen bases this season.   One thing the Buffalo offensive attack seems to lack is overall team speed.  They have 7 stolen bases this year with Eugenio Velez leading the team with 3.

A rainout and a doubleheader this week has the starting pitching a bit jumbled but it appears veteran righthander and former Ironpigs pitcher Dave Bush will start on Friday against Ethan Martin.   Bush was in the majors with Toronto but was sent to Buffalo on April 9th.  He has made 1 start for the Bisons and defeated Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, allowing just 1 unearned run in 5 innings.  Another veteran who has been solid this year has been Claudio Vargas.  He has made 2 starts this year and is 1-0 1.64 but has just 11 innings pitched.  Justin Germano pitched well with Pawtucket last year and threw 8 shutout innings in a win over the Ironpigs on June 30th.  He is 2-1 in 3 starts with Buffalo this year but his ERA is 8.44.   42 year old Miguel Batista has made 2 starts this year after signing as a free agent just 2 weeks ago but he has yet to make it through 3 innings in either start.  His ERA is 12.00.  Another of their starters, Ramon Ortiz, got called up to Toronto earlier this week.  Edgar Gonzalez has also started a game for the Bisons but his ERA is 11.25.  They also have Todd Redmond currently on the DL and it’s not known at this time when he will return to action.  They have plenty of veterans in their bullpen including 2011 Ironpigs lefty Juan Perez.  Other familiar names in their bullpen include Brad Lincoln, Buddy Carlyle, Bobby Korecky, Alex Hinshaw and Neil WagnerMickey Storey appears to have the best power arm in the bullpen with 12 strikeouts in 9.2 innings this year while Neil Wagner leads the team with 2 Saves.  Also, Alex Hinshaw has not allowed a run this year in 5 appearances covering 6 innings.  He has 8 strikeouts but has also walked 8.   Perez and Hinshaw are the only 2 lefties on their staff.

It appears the best way to beat the Buffalo Bisons is to come out swinging and score as many runs as possible because it looks like they will score their fair share of runs.  Overall, the Bisons are 8-4 and in their 4 losses their opponents have scored a total of 42 runs.   They are coming off a 4 game sweep at Syracuse including the record setting 27-9 win over Syracuse on Thursday.   Impressive as that is, I have to assume that the 19 mph wind blowing out to left field helped with some of that production.  Buffalo has lost to Syracuse twice this year and once each to Rochester and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.   Hopefully the young Ironpigs pitching staff will be up to the task this week and slow down the hottest hitting team in the league.

‘Pigs Open Weekend Series Tonight

Friday Night Fireworks, photo courtesy ironpigsbaseball.com

Friday Night Fireworks, photo courtesy ironpigsbaseball.com

The IronPigs will open a “wrap-around” series with the Buffalo Bison tonight with a 7:05 first pitch–weather permitting.  As of this writing, we’re still expecting Ethan Martin (could be held back by the Lannan/Savery spot in Philly) versus old friend Dave Bush (could be held back by rain).  The Bisons scored 27 runs yesterday, and the IronPigs 14–so no doubt we’re in for a pitcher’s duel tonight if they can get this one in.   The Bison are now the AAA affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, with the Mets having been exiled to Las Vegas.  Some will remember the days when Syracuse was the Jays affiliate….

Also, there will be NoiseNation presence in the Hot Corner tonight, as we prepare for a full review of the new seats and amenities available there.

As mentioned above, weather may be a factor this evening, while the rest of the weekend looks OK.  One strategy is to remain at home until social media informs you that the tarps are coming off.  That will allow you approximately 30 minutes to get to the park while they line the field.  As per usual though–and barring extraordinary weather happenings–they will open the doors.  Stay tuned!

Our new executive chef begins to flex his culinary muscles for this second home stand with a few new offerings at the Pig Stop.  First up on Friday is “The Last Call” – Bourbon BBQ Chicken, Cheddar-Jack Cheese, Char-grilled Jalapeno & Coleslaw on Panini-pressed french bread.  Only $6.00!

Saturday evening first pitch looks to be 6:35PM barring a double-header addition from the Friday game. Projected starter for the ‘Pigs is BJ Rosenberg.  The Bison do not have a projected starter at this time.  It’s John Mayberry Jr. pint glass night for the first 3,000 adults.  Also on Saturday, authentic game-worn road jerseys will be auctioned to benefit ironpigscharities.

Saturday night at the PigStop:  “The Damn Yankee” – Sliced Meatloaf, French Fried Onions, Cheddar Cheese & stone-ground Dijonaise on sourdough for $7.00.

Sunday is knit cap day with a 1:35 first pitch (barring double-header, yadda, yadda) for the first 3,000 adults.  It’s also dog day in the park.  The IronPigs look to send Tyler Cloyd to the mound if things go as planned, to face RHP Claudio Vargas.

At the PigStop: “The Jackhammer” – Honey Cured Ham, Pepper-Jack Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato & Chipotle Mayo on  a Wrap.  $6.50

..

Monday is an “Education” day (I’m still unsure about the actual education going on, but I don’t have a problem with it per se) with the usual 10:35AM start.  It works well as a “get away” day for the ‘Pigs as they get set for the far-western road trip to Indianapolis and Louisville.  I do plan on stopping by for only me second ever early day game–the last was the Elarton “beginning of the end” game–I think versus Brundage’s Gwinnett team last year.  I’m hoping for a better result this time.  Jon Pettibone is scheduled to take the mound.

I’m also hoping they reconsider opening the PigStop for some omelets   The PigStop is to be closed on Monday, which is disappointing as a nice omlet and some coffee would be great when I arrive around 10:00!  Side note: the PigStop has added a “coffee bar” with flavors and whatnot.  It’s a great idea; I hope it continues–especially in the MORNING!

Check in for updates as the weekend progresses.  We may add some audio updates too, and there’s an old podcast to be produced, to get you ready for the games.

Please remember to vote every day in the blog contest; we appreciate it!

See you at the park,

JC Ramirez Promoted to IronPigs!

As we posted earlier, the open spot on the Pig’s roster has been officially announced as JC Ramirez.

Reading’s PR dept. posted the info on Twitter moments ago.

Last season Ramirez went 3-2 with a 4.28 ERA in 29 games. He earned 1 save striking out 34 while walking only 17.

Welcome aboard JC!

Savery to Phillies, ________ to Pigs

Twitter is abuzz with the news that left hander Joe Savery will be called up to the Phillies tomorrow. He will be filling the void left by John Lannan who was placed on the disabled list.

Savery has been great for the IronPigs so far this season with a 1-0 record allowing no runs on 2 hits in 7.2 innings over 5 games.

The Pig’s bullpen will miss him greatly.

I suspect he will be replaced on the Pig’s roster by someone from the Reading team.

Looking at the relievers we see JC Ramirez who is almost identical in work this spring. 1-0 with no runs on 2 hits in 7 innings.

Ramirez is my best guess.

Austin Wright is my wild card maybe guess.

Also on the radar, (thanks to Cheryl for mentioning), is the potential for a Delmon Young rehab assignment.

Normally, early rehabs are done in the warmer Florida climate and with the Pigs on the road save the next four days… I don’t think it is likely to happen but it IS possible.

Until tomorrow!

OinK!

‘Pigs use Can Opener, Beat PawSox

The Pawtucket RedSox remain undefeated–against all teams not named IronPigs.

The IronPigs opened up a can of something on the PawSox this afternoon in Rhode Island to close out a 3-1 series win and a 5-2 northeastern road trip by the score 14-5.  Following a lackluster game last evening, which they lost 6-1, the IronPigs opened a 5-1 lead on old “friend” Rubby De La Rosa, whom we beat up pretty good last week.  Young lefty Adam Morgan plowed through the first two innings without allowing a hit, then struggled with his command a tad in the bottom of the third giving up a run on a walk, wild pitch, and two ground outs. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Morgan gave up a single and a double, but still no runs.  By the bottom of the fifth, Morgan had thrown 100 pitches and left with a 5-1 lead.  His line was 5.0IP/2H/1R/1ER/3BB/4K.  He remains the IronPigs most effective starting pitcher at this juncture, and speculation has him going to Philadelphia to replace DL-listed John Lannan.  However, with 100 pitches thrown today, that seems somewhat doubtful now as he’d have to pitch again on Monday in Lannan’s spot.

Mike Stutes came in to give up four earned runs on five hits–including a Big Pappi solo homer–but nevertheless earned the Blown Save/Win combination once Tyson Gillies pulled out the can opener:

An Overbeck K, then an Orr single.  Susdorf walks then Lerud pops out.  Two on and two out:  Gillies launches one to right center on a 2-0 pitch against former IronPig Oscar Villareal.

The Pigs never looked back.  They added a Lerud 2-run homer and an Overbeck Grand Slam in the ninth.

  • JMitch–the J-TRAIN!–went 3/6 with 3 RBI to come up a homer short of the cycle and raise his average to .227
  • Cody Asche went 4/6 to raise his average to .234
  • Susdorf 3/4 with a double and 2 RBI to go with 3 runs scored
  • Gillies putting it all together:  3/4, 3RBI, 3Runs and the dinger, to raise his average to .175 and get off the schnide.
  • Speedy Petey and the J-Train had stolen bases
  • Savery pitched a clean seventh inning with 2K
  • Diekman touched 96MPH and pitched the eighth and ninth with 2K, 1BB, and no hits

….

Buffalo scored 27 runs on Syracuse TODAY, so we’ll look forward to a 1-0 pitcher’s duel when they come to town tomorrow, no doubt!  Here’s hoping the weather clears as we welcome our piggies back!  Let’s get out there and make some noise!

….

Late word is that the Phillies will call up a reliever tomorrow–I’m guessing Savery–and make the rotation replacement decision before Monday.  My opinion is that it may depend on the weather:  If the Phillies rotation gets moved back a day, it should be Morgan.

See you at the park,

@Kram209

Pigs Win Again!

The Pawtucket RedSox are undefeated–unless they have to play the IronPigs.  The IronPigs took another from the 8-2 PawSox this afternoon as the sounds of screaming school children filled our computers, streaming audio and video of an early afternoon game.

Jon Pettibone got the start for the IronPigs and struggled with his control at times.  He made a lot of good pitches for strikes, but narrowly missed some others which led to two walks and seven hits over the first four innings, to go with three strikeouts.  This yielded four runs–earned–for Pawtucket.

Pettibone was to face off against knuckleballer Steven Wright who flummoxed us pretty good on the home end of this home-and-home April series.  However, Wright was a late scratch with speculation that he may be called to Boston.  Chris Hernandez was moved up to take the start against the IronPigs.

The change in pitchers was fortunate for young outfielder Leandro Castro, who was due to get a day off.  He was added to the lineup batting second and playing Right Field.  He e to crush a long drive to center which required a Revere-esque play by Pawtucket Center Fielder Mitch Maier.  Then, he added a three run line-drive home run and a double with run scored.

Tommy Joseph also added a three-run dinger, and Overbeck had a round-tripper as well.  Justin Friend relieved Pettibone and went two and 2/3 yeilding two more runs for the Red Sox AAA affiliate.  While he doesn’t normally pitch that many innings, the IronPigs are preparing for a “bullpen” day tomorrow with Cesar Jimenez getting the start.

Tyson Gillies got two hits to get his average back to triple digits; however, was picked off twice while on base.  The first time, he was sent on a hit and run but left early and got nabbed.  The second time was a more traditional pick-off at first.  I’ve gotta feel for Tyson as it seems he’s trying too hard.  Perhaps it’s time for a day off for him as he continues to try to adjust to his new batting instruction as well  as the AAA game.  We’re still pulling for him!

Jake Diekman worked a clean 1.1 with but one walk to go with two strikeouts.  With the score now 8-6, it was up to Michael Stutes to close down the heart of the order–although three-hole hitter and rehab player David Ortiz was lifted for a pinch hitter after going oh-for-four.  Gillies with a nice play in Center, then Lavarnway with a can of corn to Castro and a three pitch K of Brentz.  Save Stutes!

The ‘Pigs are now above .500 for the first time in the Brundage era!  They’ll face off again with the PawSox tomorrow at 6:15PM.

IronPig Game Results 4/15/2013

The IronPigs left Syracuse wearing a 4 win 5 loss record and jumped right into the mix of it to start their series in Pawtucket. Pawtucket is leading the IL North division with an impressive 9 win 1 loss record.

The IronPigs got an early start in the second inning with Josh Field’s first IronPig home run!

Pawtucket added 3 for their cause in the 3rd inning, combining baserunners, hits and a Gillies error to clear the bases and take the lead.

The Pigs rallied in the top of the 8th. Cody Asche started off the inning with a walk, scoring on a Darin Ruf double. Ruf advanced to third on a passed ball only to tie the score on a gapper line drive double by Josh Fields! Cody Overbeck lined a single putting the Pigs at 1st and 3rd with no outs and a tie game. Tyson Gillies did his part walking to load the bases. Steve Lerud promptly struck out. Martinez singled scoring Ruf and Fields! IronPigs 5 – Pawsox 3.

Pawtucket then showed some glimpses of the early season IronPigs with a botched light grounder to second base and topped the play off by overthrowing first base allowing Gillies to score. Leandro Castro hit a screamer up the middle but a great play ended the inning.

10 batters up in 8th. 4 hits, 2 walks, 1 error and 5 runs. IronPigs 6 – Pawsox 3.

Starting off the top of the ninth, the Pigs started again with Ruf taking a base on balls. I then heard a voice somewhere out there say, “Josh, hit another home run for me” and Josh Fields smashed his 2nd HR of the season and the night to put the Pigs up 8 to 3!

Josh Fields went 4 for 4 with 2 home runs, 4 RBI and 1 walk. The advantage of getting the veteran in the lineup using the DH against American League affiliates.

Of note – I called the second Josh Field’s home run. Text to Kram209 as proof. Not as cool as “Kratz is going to crank one” in Scranton two years ago when Kratz brought home a win for the Pigs with a ninth inning HR, but real close.

***

Starter Tyler Cloyd went 6 innings allowing 5 hits and 3 runs (2 earned). Tyler walked 4 and struck out 5.

Justin DeFratus pitched the 7th allowing only 1 hit.

Joe Savery pitched the bottom half of the 8th and set the Pawsox down in order. “Joe continues to mow” – Matt Provence @PigsRadio

Savery stayed in to close out the ninth.

Final Score: IronPigs 8 – Pawsox 3

***

For a great Pawsox Point of view check out our friend over at Pawsox Heavy!

Of note – LHP Tom Cochran activated off the D.L. and assigned to Reading. I’m thinking this was an injured Valendia as he was immediately ready to come back after a Reading pitcher injured himself. Perhaps the first Injured Valendia of the year?

Adam Morgan Named IL Pitcher of the Week!

The International League named IronPig Adam Morgan the Pitcher of the Week!

(c) Cheryl Pursell

(c) Cheryl Pursell

Making just his second start at the Triple-A level, left-hander Adam Morgan baffled the Syracuse
Chiefs Saturday for 8.0 innings to pick up his first win with Lehigh Valley. Other International League
pitchers had posted a 7.66 ERA against the Syracuse lineup, but Morgan allowed just three hits and
one walk to the Chiefs while striking out four in 8.0 scoreless innings. He even contributed to the
scoring, recording his first career hit and RBI to help propel the IronPigs to a 6-0 victory.
