More Concerts at Coca Cola Park!

The IronPig’s Twitter account @IronPigs announced this morning that a series of concerts will be held at The Coke this summer! Even better, music lovers, there will be pre-game concerts at just about every IronPig home game!

A few of the artists performing are Leechboy, The Ritz Band, Sleight of Hand, Red:Karl Eisenhart, Exit 22, SteelCreek and many many more. For a full listing of artists and respective dates, click here.

This is pretty cool. I’m not a huge music buff, if you are you may want to check out our friend Matt Metal’s Blog.

Just another great benefit of being an IronPig fan!

The IronPigs also released more photos of the Tiki Terrace over the left field wall.

View from the table area of the new Tiki Terrace at Coca Cola Park

It looks like it will be a fun area this summer.

The Noise Nation blog was slammed with search requests for a photo of Meredith Marakovits yesterday... here's one of my favorites!

***

Only 13 days until the Pig vs R-Phils exhibition game!

Only 14 days until the premiere of the PBS IronPig movie!

Only 15 days until Opening Day at The Coke!

Who’s ready?!

OinK!

Two Years. Two Championships. Do the IronPigs Need More Cowbell?

Revisiting this again as I noticed a post on Twitter from @CLBClippers (The Official Twitter of the 2010 & 2011 Triple-A National Champion Baseball Affiliate of the Cleveland Indians.)

“Clippers cowbells are everywhere! #ringyourbell http://twitpic.com/8yyiu7”

As we know, the Clippers defeated our beloved IronPigs in the Governor’s Cup Finals last season before going on to win the Triple A National Championship but they also won the 2010 Triple A National Championship as well!

Back to back, double up, whatever you want to call it… the Clippers have won two championships in consecutive years. In these days of trades, transactions, injuries and that looming control from the parent club above it is quite an achievement to be so successful.

My, not-so-educated guess, would be they have something extra. Something that tips the scales in their favor. Beyond having a highly motivated and talented team. Beyond having an average of 8,704 fans at each home game. They’ve got something extra.

Could it be the cowbells?

They’ve got the “Columbus Clippers Ring Your Bell” song. (I’ll spare your afternoon by not posting it here as it quite catchy and would stick in your head all day)

They’ve got cowbells with a team logo on it.

Photo from the Columbus Clipper's Twitter account

Could it be the cowbell?

What do you think?

Writing this for amusement purposes only. No crusade to enlist legions of cowbellers at the Coke but found it interesting and wanted to share.

OinK!

Could the Pigs Lose Galvis?

Is there a chance that prospect Freddy Galvis will take the turn that Wilson Valdez did a couple years ago?

We were all looking forward to, and expecting, Valdez to be an IronPig a couple seasons ago. He never suited up and was called up to the Phillies to cover for an injury.

This morning I’m reading that Chase Utley’s nagging knee injury is still a problem and that Freddy Galvis could get the Opening Day call.

From Todd Zolecki on Twitter @ToddZolecki:

Amaro said Utley is “doubtful” for Opening Day. Said Freddy Galvis looks like the Opening Day second baseman.

That puts a hole in the IronPig’s infield. Who do you think will fill that spot?

A New Soccer Fan? Philly Union Home Opener!

I’m going to start this post by saying.. this is not a family friendly post.

*** Viewer Discretion is Advised ***

The following will contain “not-so-family-environment” information.

This afternoon a few of us Noise Nation members took a trip down to PPL Park for the Philadelphia Union Soccer Team’s Home Opener. Final score of the game Philly 1 – Colorado 2. The game was exciting but onto other aspects.

This was not an inexpensive, value oriented adventure. We got decent seats with a nice view of the whole field. Ticket price – $40.

The view from our seats

Parking – $20

$20 seems insane for parking but if you’ve ever been to Chester, PA you’d understand the added security of having someone keeping an eye on your vehicle. I took a few photos of this “rough” of which this “diamond” of a park that PPL park is in the middle of but chose against publishing them. It looks like the soccer stadium was placed dead smack in the middle of this downtrodden area in hopes of revitalizing it. (Sound familiar?) Well, I didn’t see any revitalization but it looks far, far worse than Allentown.

We got there early and the team store was open. One of the few points of this part that didn’t absolutely drain the wallet.

Every staff member I encountered was super friendly and helpful

That being said, I did some shopping.

Jersey – $55
Customization of Jersey – $20
2 – Team Pins – $10
Car magnet – $7

New hat and jersey

Not too bad. They even offered to deliver the jersey to my seat if it wasn’t ready by game time. Great service there.

Then we got inside.

For Kram’s favorite topic, we checked out the food. Holy moly Batman, these prices were insane.

Yikes!

Double Yikes!

$10 for a burger and small hanful of fries. Not a terrible deal.

Three chicken tenders and small amount of fries - $9. Not terrible.

We ate cheaply.. relatively. There is no way I’m paying $10 for a hot dog no matter how big it is. Nor $10-$13 for a stadium beer.

Moving on.. there is a section of the stadium set aside for the Union’s most dedicated fans called the “Sons of Ben.” They are loud, they are rowdy and they are far away from being family friendly… yet incredibly nice friendly folks.

They wave flags, bang drums and sing songs throughout the entire game. Some selections include:
– A version of the Muppet’s classic, “Mahna-Mahna”
– You S*ck Ref
– You’re an A**hole
– Hey Ref, S*ck my B*lls

In fact, when the opposing team is introduced following each player’s name the entire crowd yells, “S*cks!”

For example: “Starting for the (opposing team) #22 John Doe” to the crowd response “S*cks!”

Also, the entire section on the River End where these diehards sit, turn their backs on the opposing team as they take the field.

They take soccer very, very seriously.

Hey kids, if you’re still reading, I doubt your parents will take you anytime soon. You’ll have many years to get to one of these games in the future.

Other notes of the game…

The game was broadcast nationally on NBC Sports TV for the sellout 19,074 in attendance. The crowd sang the National Anthem. There was a big screen in game marraige proposal in the row immediately behind us. She said yes to two Unions this afternoon.

It was a great experience but as the final seconds clicked off the clock solidifying the Philly Union’s loss this afternoon there was no fun to be had. There were no smiles. There was no jocular ribbing and smiling on the way out. In soccer, winning is fun… losing is not fun. It’s not how well they played the game, it’s if they win and winning is the only time these fans have fun.

I began this by proposing there might be a new soccer fan created today and I have to say I am not yet a soccer fan. I did have fun. I smiled on the way home. I enjoyed my day trip to Philadelphia and my new Union Jersey, hat and other fun stuff.

I am not yet worthy to call myself a fan of soccer as these true fans have shown me what true, all out, die-hard fans should be like.

Do not confuse their fanaticism as an insult. These folks are intelligent in all aspects of the game. They are friendly and courteous to fellow fans, judgemental of the officiating and downright nasty to the opposing team. They are soccer fans.

It was a good fun day for the four who made the trip but the pricetag is too high for me to make it more than a once or twice a season event. (I will definitely eat before the game if/when I get back to another one.

And definitely not for the youngsters.

Enjoy!

Hawks and Pigs and Mikeys – Oh My!

(The good stuff is around the 2:45 mark and Dan there is a re-match in the future).

I began with that video because while this post is primarily about the Noise Nation rocking Stabler Arena at the LV Steelhawks football game, the evening surprisingly ended with an IronPigs connection.

Before kick-off the energy was high at Stabler with the Engineer’s upset of  the Blue Devils the previous evening and some trash talking by the ‘cross-town’ rival Reading Express fans who were a great bunch. We look forward to our next encounter with them.

In the end, The Steelhawks (2-2) put the Express (0-3) back on the train south by a score of 86-53 in an action packed thriller.

The scoring tirade was led by QB Bryan Randall who was starting in his first game since joining the Steelhawks.  Randall completed 10 of 14 passes for 213 yards and five touchdowns, and also found the endzone on two rushing TDs.

Kutztown U’s own 6’4″ 340lb Chris Medina DL/OL recovered a fumble and  lumbered to what was a sure touchdown but wound up at the 1″ line for a first and goal.  I could hear Berman  yelling “he’s bumbling, stumbling…” I spoke to the big man after the game and he was diligently searching for an instant replay!

One of may favorite players, gentleman Jeff “whatcha talkin’ ’bout” Willis WR  6’3″ 190 lbs grabbed 4 rec for 98 yards and 3 TD’s helping the Hawks to 351 yards of total offense (on a 50 yard field). The Hawks scored 11 TDs and it was clear Jeff was talkin’ touchdowns this evening. Great game Jeff!

As usual after a Steelhawks home game the celebration moved to Roosevelts’ 21st and with St. Patrick’s Day the place was bulging with revelers. It’s always a blast hanging with the Steelhawks family and having the players thank us personally for bringing the NOISE.

As the night drew to a close, Jimmy T, Sara and myself were making our way out when a young man donning his best Windsor flat cap approached, stood in front of us and said “Hey I’m Mikey the V”!

Wait? What?

After a thoroughly enjoyable evening of LV Sports there we were suddenly talking to Mikey the V with whom The Nation has been on the air with many times but never had the pleasure to meet.  It was nice to hear Mikey’s appreciation for the Noise Nation’s dedication and support of the IronPigs.

As you may know Mikey the V is traveling west this summer to call play-by-play for the Southern Illinois Miners of the Independent Frontier League and we will surely miss him.

Best of luck to you Mikey and we will be calling Illinois which at the end of the day we may have to re-named IlliNOISE!

What a great night and there are only 18 days left until the IronPigs adventure of 2012 begins!

Go Hawks!

OinK On!

Official Underwear Supplier of Triple A Baseball!

From the International League website:

“Triple-A Baseball and Gildan have today announced a three-year agreement to make the leading supplier of t-shirts, activewear, underwear and socks anofficial national sponsor of Triple-A Baseball.”

Exclusive deal with Triple-A Baseball. Nice!

“The national sponsorship includes an in-park presence at every stadium throughout the season as well as integrated media components such as game programs, website banners, radio and television advertising in addition to game tickets and more.”

This should be interesting.

“Recognized for quality, comfort, durability and value, the Gildan® brand is worn by active families, aspiring athletes and enthusiastic fans on the playing fields and in the stands everywhere.”

One last one…

“This all-encompassing partnership with Gildan is such a perfect fit for Triple-A Baseball.”

Who doesn’t love a perfect fit when it comes to tshirts, socks and underwear?

The Final Countdown! – March 2012

I love the song “The Final Countdown” by Europe.

So the story goes, this song was written to be an opening song for concerts and never intended to be a hit (It reached #1 in 25 countries in 1986) and I don’t believe anyone would think it would have any cultural impact as it has now being played at sporting events.

It’s amazing how songs bring those feelings in…

Did you check to see how much beer you had after listening to this? That feeling of, “Oh no.. this song is played during the 7th inning stretch just after Take Me Out to the Ballgame and beer sales end at the bottom of the 7th!”

Anyways, mid-March doesn’t signify basketball madness to me. Mid-March is that last minute wait. The time when I temporarily say goodbye to all of my winter friends and watering holes. It’s when baseball (and much much more) pokes its head out from winter and reclaims our hearts.

I say baseball, but there is so much more to look forward to this year.

Looking at the Noise Nation schedule, we’ve got the Steelhawk’s home game on Saturday. We’ve got the Philadelphia Union Soccer game on Sunday. It’ll be my first pro soccer game. I have a a feeling I will fit in. These Union fans have it going on…

That covers the remainder of this week.

March 31st! Mark your calendars for the first LV Rollergirl’s home bout!

The video is a bit dated, a few familiar faces in there… but it is a kick butt sport and a great time. It’s also BYOB! (no glass containers)

Then comes the R-Phils/IronPig’s exhibition on April 3rd in Reading. April 4th brings the PBS IronPig documentary (has Jimmy T dusted off the tuxedo yet?) and April 5th is the IronPig’s home opener!

After that.. well, the countdown is over and the fun begins and we begin the Summer of Fun 2012.

See you out there!
