Buy 72–Get 8 Free

I was sitting alone at soccer practice last Friday when it came across my Twitter account from @IronPigs:  buy a full-season ticket package, and receive the eight “away” games versus the SWB Yankees for free.  Immediately, I began to fire off a response:  why don’t we ALL get eight games free?  But then, tweeting from soccer practice has led to misunderstandings before (see also:  free playoff tickets post), so I didn’t…

Well, we do.  All season full-season ticket holders will receive the eight bonus games at no extra charge (see ironpigsbaseball.com for front page article with details).  In addition, four-packs of Yankees/away tickets will be made available to 18- and 36-game ticket plan holders for only $20 ($5 per seat, per game).  Using these extra games as a perk to sell more packages is a great idea.  Not leaving the current season-ticket holders out in the cold, is even better.

I do not know the arrangement made between the IronPigs and the Yankees regarding the ticket sales for these games.  My advice to the IronPigs when this was announced was:  “Don’t get cute.”  I fully expected to get an offer to buy my seats first, for $448.00–and I probably would have paid it.  (Or at least used my playoff credits towards it. 🙂 )  But I must say, this is much better.  A very nice perk for the most-loyal customers.  It will fill a lot of seats, but still leave plenty of tickets for individual sales.  My advice holds from here, though:  they should sell the groups and sell the tickets and have some promos (OK, maybe Yankees gear here, if they want) and do their thing.  I don’t think they should treat these games any differently than any other IronPigs games unless their agreement with the Yankees says they have to.  Don’t ruin the product.

In a conversation the other day, regarding the IronPigs, I remarked that in four short years the IronPigs have progressed from a successful local entertainment business to a beloved local establishment.  Sometimes, a beloved local establishment has to do the right thing.  This is a good example of that.  It doesn’t mean they can’t make money, but it does mean that they have to make people happy.  They have to look for a win-win.  That means giving away free water when the heat index is over 100.  It means not skimping on promos even though the sponsor may only be able to afford so many.  And it means making sure that your best customers are in the house for the eight extra games this year.

Good job by them, on this one.

A Warm Spot in My Heart for Dave Huppert

Dave Huppert was the IronPig’s skipper for the first 3 seasons here in the Lehigh Valley.

He led the team with much criticism and did the job the Phillies expected him to.

While not the most loved baseball manager in IronPig’s history, Huppert will not have to face what manager #3 will have to face.

It’s more than likely that Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg will not return to the IronPigs in 2012. There are many teams, many cities and many fans clamoring for him to take the helm of their teams. I don’t blame them. That’s how we felt last off-season.

Sandberg pushed the IronPigs to win the first game of the season this year catapulting them to the first over .500 winning percentage in team history, a share in first place for the first time (and held in that position for a good part of the season) and got them to the finals in the International league playoffs.

Whoever comes in next is going to have a tough time winning over fans. Will that new manager care? You never know but I think whoever it might be needs to be ready for it. With a taste of winning, IronPig fans have grown to expect more and more. What will year 5 bring us?

I noticed something this season that I hadn’t heard often at Coca Cola Park. The fan base booed a player off of the field. Domonic Brown did struggle and may or may not have deserved the reception but fans were more supportive or, for lack of a better word, understanding in the past.

Pig Fans have gotten a taste of winning and I foresee a season filled with second guessing the manager and hearing “What would Sandberg have done there?”

I look forward to hear who the 2012 IronPig Manager will be… but I don’t envy the position he will be in one bit.

Of note: A friend is looking to sell a Dave Huppert auction jersey. If you’re interested let me know and I’ll get you in touch.

New Exec

It was a bit of a surprise when Chuck LeMar resigned from his position of Assistant GM with the Phillies in September.  His replacement was announced today when the Phillies introduced Joe Jordan as their new Director of Player Development.   In that role, Jordan will oversee the Phillies farm system from top to bottom.  The 49 year old Jordan worked in scouting for the Expos and Marlins before joining the Baltimore Orioles organization in 2004 as the Director of Amateur Scouting.  Under his leadership the Orioles drafted top prospects such as Matt Wieters, Brian Matusz, Jake Arrieta and Zach Britton.

Jordan was drafted as a catcher by the San Francisco Giants in 1985 but was injured in 1986 and released at the end of spring training.  He returned to the University of Oklahoma, received his degree in 1987 and became an assistant baseball coach for the Sooners from 1988 to 1990.  He then went into the financial investment business before joining the Expos organization in 1997.

We’ll probably be seeing Joe around Coca-Cola Park from time to time next season.   I’m sure we all wish him well in his new position as his success will ultimately translate into our success.   Welcome aboard Joe.
