IRONPIGS RHP ETHAN MARTIN NAMED I.L. PITCHER OF THE WEEK

(Allentown, PA) – Lehigh Valley RHP Ethan Martin was named International League Pitcher of the Week for June 24-30, as announced earlier today. During the period, the 24-year-old Martin went 2-0, 0.64 ERA in two starts (14 ip, 5 h, r, er, 8 bb, 10 k).

Martin was the only I.L. pitcher to record two victories this week, and no IL pitcher bested his 14.0 innings pitched. Martin was masterful last Monday at Columbus, tossing 6.0 innings of three-hit, one-run baseball while matching his season-high with eight

strikeouts in a 9-2 win. Back home Sunday afternoon against Toledo, Martin turned in arguably his best outing of 2013. He lasted a season-high 8.0 innings, surrendering just two hits and three walks without giving up a run.

Martin, now tied for the IL lead in victories (9), has also won a franchise-record tying four consecutive starts for the second time this season. His win on Monday (June 24) made him the fastest IronPigs pitcher to reach eight victories in a season. He is also now the fastest ever to nine wins.

In fact, Martin’s nine wins rank in a five-way tie for fourth for single-season pitching victories. Only THP Tyler Cloyd (12, 2012), RHP Drew Carpenter (11, 2009) and LHP Ryan Feierabend (10, 2011) have recorded more.

The native of Athens, Ga., is in his fifth professional season and first full season with the Phillies organization after coming over from the Dodgers in last summer’s trade that sent Shane Victorino to Los Angeles on July 31, 2012.

We sure have been enjoying watching Ethan pitch and yesterday’s outing was simply brilliant. It’s a shame he couldn’t pitch the complete game but I imagine he was on a 100 pitch limit. At this rate he’ll get the call up soon and (while we selfishly hope he stays a while) we certainly wish him Good Luck!!

Go Ethan!
