Don’t Like Horn & Bells? It Could Be Worse..

It’s news like this that makes me wonder if the world is moving quickly towards an outcome similiar to the movie, “Idiocracy.” If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth a rent. Spoiler to come below..

The whole premise of the movie is that as technology and automation advance, the world becomes collectively dumber and uber-prone to advertising and a “Gator Ade” like product.

So yesterday at Citizen’s Bank Park, another of those fan stories leaked out of Philadelphia and hit the web with a fury. A police chief (these morons picked the worst possible target of their ignorance) and his two daughters were subjected to profanity, spitting, beer being thrown and ultimately the fan purposely vomiting on them while being escorted from the stadium.

I have been to Citizen’s Bank Park a bunch of times and you see these folks and occasionally a few show up at Coca Cola Park but they usually have one thing in common. They are not fans who go to games often.

These fans buy into the whole “Rowdy Philadelphia Fan” myth and while years ago that may have been true… season ticket holders and frequent fans pay too much for their tickets and wouldn’t risk a banishment losing their tickets and their cash.

I have a name for these groups, as it is seldom a single fan. I call them the Growdies. They are rowdy, but only in groups. They show up at games to get drunk, cause problems and see if they can make someone mad enough to fight. You can see them everywhere and they will laugh when approached by security. They loudly proclaim stories of ignorance and injuries and will often be destructive to stadiums. As a matter of fact, late in last night’s game I ran into a group of Growdies. The Noise Nation is not tolerant of that behavior and after we payed them no attention they moved on.

These Growdies are one of the reasons we created the Noise Nation. To be a positive influence on those younger fans who want to enjoy a game enthusiastically and to be an example for the older fans who feel they need to be ignorant to have fun.

So.. I ask, which do you prefer… plastic horns and bells or projectile vomiting, beer throwing, spitting and swearing?

I agree. I do enjoy the fact that the Noise Nation has people of all ages involved. It does make for extra entertainment to the game, so much so some times, that you forget about the game as it is going on. Thank God for the scoreboard.
People that want to go somewhere and ruin someone’s time, should really just stay home. For if you were there to ruin their time, look out, they would be all over you and have security escorting you out. If you are going to pay to go somewhere, just go and enjoy YOURSELF and not ruin someone else’s time at an event.

Lots of the Nation have military experience.

Personally, I would bear that in mind.

  4. Loose Cannon – there are a few who will soon be in the military also.

  5. I don’t know if this is the same person you referred to originally, but the Express today talked about an off-duty officer from Easton antagonized by a drunkard at a Phillies game… he and his kids are invited back to a future game, where presumably they’ll be in much better seats… picture of the bozo included…

    • That’s the story. A follow up story this morning included a comment from a relative of the offender. Same stuff. Good kid, Family works hard, not typical behavior, possibly a medical issue, something he ate… he might as well have said “Kids will be kids.” Unfortunately a judge won’t accept that excuse. My feeling is that it wasn’t something he ate, it was something he drank.
