Game Notes 5/6/10 Pigs 5 – Clippers 10

The Ironpig’s scored all 5 of their runs on homeruns tonight and unfortunately the pitching staff allowed the Clippers to cross the plate 10 times. At one point, down 10 to 5, the Pigs had the bases loaded with one out but they hit into a double play ending the rally and their best chance to get back into the game.

Good’s
Andy Tracy doubled, tripled and walked. The triple was a hard hit ball to left field that Columbus’ left fielder tried to make an aggressive catch on and it scooted under his glove and rolled to the wall. Tracy did leg out the triple but as easily as it could have been a single, it could have been an inside the park homerun if any other Pig had been on the basepaths.

John Mayberry and Cody Ransom both homered. Chris Duffy hit 2. Ransom’s 7th home run is leading the team and ties his mark for errors at 7.

DeWayne Wise gunned down top prospect Carlos Santana at 3rd base trying to stretch a double into a triple.

Jerry “The King” Lawler was on hand tonight and signed free autographs for all fans willing to wait in line. He was a good sport and also assisted Hambone in his first win of the 2010 Pork Races by clotheslining the showboating Chris P. Bacon and Diggity.

Not so Good’s
Both teams had 11 hits and only Columbus made the most of them.

Pig’s pitchers issued 8 walks and seemed a little wild tonight. Combined they threw 155 pitches and only 87 of them for strikes. Gordon alone issued 4 walks.

Clutch hitting remains a problem for the Pigs. They stranded 6 runners on base.

    1. Great call, Dan, on the Hambone win. Also forshadowed by Landes tweet today. I couldn’t get anyone in my section to take a bet.
    2. Guy in front of me stuck the foul ball catch or I would have had my first. Great, great catch by him, though.
    3. Great crowd in my section tonight. Might have been a chorus of “Oye Como Va” for Carlos had the game been closer or lasted longer. Just for fun…
    4. Glad Jason Donald didn’t hit 2 homers tonight–nothing against him, it just would have been painful (more, I mean). BTW, did he sign his K’s?
    5. Just wait until Duffy gets his swing back…
    6. Great Cuban Panini tonight. Maybe that’s why I felt like singing “Oye Como Va.”
    7. I kinda like Brian Mazone, but that’s why he’s not a Major League pitcher. Those are some Major League hitters in that lineup. The walks don’t help though.
    8. Gordon seems less effective the last two outings than he did earlier in the year.
    9. Great fun with the ushers tonight as I accidently came dressed in khakis and a red shirt.
    10. Son’s game trumps ‘Pigs, so I’m out tomorrow night. Back Saturday with the whole crew, then out again Mother’s Day as one of my employees has my tickets. Love to be able to split with this team.

    • I did try the Thursday pulled pork plate last night and the pork was incredible. Really, great stuff. The baked beans and potato salad were generic,, next time I will just ask for the sandwich.

The HR that landed right in front of me was a similiar experience. The ball was hit right at this guy 2 levels down from me. It went like this…
      1. Crack of the bat
      2. He looks up in disbelief as it is heading right at him
      3. He slides his beer and nachos down the shelf to avoid being hit.
      4. He looks around to see if anyone else is near.. noone is.
      5. The ball closes.. he claps his hands together and goes up for the catch.
      6. The ball hits him square on both palms… didn’t even have to move a step.
      7. Wince in agony as the ball ricochets off his hands 40 feet to the right where it rolls to a stop at a kid’s feet.
      8. When his friends return, none of them believe him.

      Good stuff!

one more thing: Great stab by Ransom at 3B early in the game. Credit where credit is due.

As far as the foul: the guy in front of me, there with his three kids, had pretty big paws and he held it. (he gave it to his kids, of course) I had my hands on his when he got it, but if one of his kids had been in his seat, I probably wouldn’t have been able to hold it; it would have been over their heads and I would have had to scramble probably for the drop. But I was out of my seat and had it lined up. In that scenario, if I’d have been playing with my blackberry, it would have hit me in the chest. That’s the dangerous thing about the 400 pigsradio tweets during a game…(not that I don’t like updates…)
