Game Notes 5/12/10 – Pigs 6, Knights 5

Luck finally fell the Ironpigs way as the defeated the Charlotte Knights 6 to 5 at Knight’s Stadium. The Pigs loaded the bases in the 9th with a walk, hit by pitch and a hard single off the backend of Knight’s pitcher Ryan Braun. John Mayberry came up and drove a ball well over the left field wall for a grand slam giving the Pigs their first lead of the night and with that lead Scott Mathieson closed the game out for his 2nd win of the season.

Good’s
Cody Ransom homered again. He also committed no errors and made it through the entire game. He leads the Pigs with 8 HR this season.

DeWayne Wise was hitting the ball hard tonight going 3 for 5 with 2 doubles.

Rich Thompson continues to show us why he should be in the All Star game here at CCP later this summer. Rich went 2 for 4 keeping his average at .350 even.

John Mayberry came through in the clutch (finally) and hit a go ahead grand slam in the top of the ninth with the Pigs down by 3 runs.

The Pig’s bullpen came through and tossed 6.1 scoreless innings

Not so Good’s
Ryan Vogelsong gave up 5 earned runs on 4 hits in 2.2 innings. He walked 3 and struck out 4 allowing 3 home runs.

Brian Bocock went 0 for 2 with a walk and 1 RBI. He is now hitting .150. Any bets on how soon he goes sub .100?

Side Notes:
Dane Sardinha was pulled from the lineup today. With an injury to Carlos Ruiz this afternoon in Colorado, it leaves Paul Hoover as the only catcher on the Phillies roster. Emergency catcher is rumored to be Jason Werth.

Wilson Valdez, who is playing with the Phillies in place of the injured Jimmy Rollins took a lot of blame in the Phillies loss today. Hopefully he can shake off the aggravation and continue to play well.

  1. ESPN on its ticker earlier said Rollins could be back as early as Monday…

Is there not an All-Star vote for AAA like last year?

Stuff the ballot box for Rich.

    • I believe there is a safeguard built into the voting process to keep “stuffing” from happening. We sent in a good many Gary Majewski write ins last year (just to see if it would work) and he didn’t even make an honorable mention.

I don’t agree stuffing the box is right.. although I have a feeling the Lehigh Valley will mobilize itself to vote Pigs onto the team. My comment last night was that I felt only one was worthy of an all star appearance, being Thompson. Mathieson a close second… this might be today’s post so get the comment machine ready. 🙂

A Grand Slam in the 9th inning to bring the IronPigs back to win by one is what the #%@& I’m talking about, man.

Sorry, but I respectfully disagree. With all the good young prospects around the International League the only way Rich Thompson should be at the all star game is if he buys a ticket like everyone else. Stuffing the ballot box is classless (in my opinion) and shows a lack of respect to the rest of the International League. My vision of this game is 10 years from now to be saying “I saw Desmond Jennings or Pedro Alvarez or Brett Wallace” when they were just getting started. My vision is not to say “I saw a 30-something hometeam guy who had 1 big league at bat with the Royals 6 years ago”. Let’s give the mlb network the future stars they want to see and not a bunch of mediocre hometeam guys who are trying to hang on to a baseball career for 1 more year. Just my opinion.

    Wow.

The MLB network can go jump in the Lehigh River.

That would be my view of matters.
