The only way a non-contending team can compete for the top free agents is to offer them lots more money than the big boys. Unfortunately for Washington, Jayson Werth isn’t a top free agent, he’s just one of the better players available on the free agent market this year. As Jim Bouton wrote in “Ball Four”, you gotta, “smoke ’em inside”. I can only imagine what it’s going to take for the Cardinals to sign Albert Pujols to an extension next year.
Crazy contract for the Nationals.. I have a feeling this will go down in history as a poor decision. Good call Bert! I won’t be making spring training this year. 😦
