Per Todd Zolecki on Twitter @ToddZolecki,
The Phillies have optioned De Fratus, Naylor, Ramirez, Garcia, Hernandez, Rivero and Rizzotti to minor league camp.
Re-assigned to minor league camp are Bass, Bonine, Carpenter, Feierabend, Schwimer, Naughton, Bozied, Quinlan and Miller.
Also of note, Rob Quinlin asked for and received a release after being cut.
Ironpig Spring Training games start on March 14th!
OinK!

Trying to figure out out the names of who is left in big league camp isn’t easy but this is what I could come up with.
Likely/possible Phillies roster includes:
Pitchers (12): Danys Baez, Antonio Bastardo, Joe Blanton, Jose Contreras, Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels, Kyle Kendrick, Cliff Lee, Brad Lidge, Ryan Madson, Roy Oswalt, J.C. Romero.
Catchers (2): Carlos Ruiz, Brian Schneider
Infielders (5): Ryan Howard, Placido Polanco, Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Wilson Valdez.
Outfielders (5): Ben Francisco, Ross Gload, Raul Ibanez, John Mayberry, Shane Victorino.
Michael Martinez was a Rule 5 pick and I can’t see him making the team so he may have to be offered back to his previous team.
Domonic Brown will begin the season on the DL. That leaves the following names still in major league camp:
Pitchers:
David Herndon
Scott Mathieson
Dan Meyer
Juan Perez
Brian Schlitter
Michael Stutes
Vance Worley
Mike Zagurski
Catchers:
Tuffy Gosewisch
Erik Kratz
Dane Sardinha
Infielders:
Josh Barfield
Brian Bocock
Freddy Galvis
Jeff Larish
Pete Orr
Outfielders:
Brandon Moss
Delwyn Young
Barfield or Young could start the season with the Phillies if Utley goes on the DL.
You’ve got 24 listed above, so that leaves one spot open. I figure De Young because he can play outfield as well as second base. Barfield becomes the extra infielder if Utley can’t go. Any kind of nick to a pitcher, though, probably throws those assumptions out the window.
I agree on Brown and Martinez. Wasn’t it the Nationals for MM? Is there a chance they don’t want him back and he gets dfa’d?
So, if we assume Delwyn Young and Josh Barfield both make the Phillies opening day roster if Utley goes to the DL, that puts Pete Orr at second base in AAA, yes? But, if Bocock’s hand injury lands him on the DL, who starts the year at shortstop for the Ironpigs? I hope it’s not Carlos Rivero. He’s an E-6 machine. I’d rather have a glove man live Galvis. The other option “could” be to put Orr at shortstop and use Harold Garcia at second. So many decisions and so little time.
Now, who’d-a thunk our whole season is shot because Bocock is on the DL?!? 😉
I’m OK with that (like they’re gonna ask me). Orr to SS, Garcia to 2B, Larish at 3B and Rizz at 1B. I’m not sure Galvis is ready to hit AAA, but who knows…how much worse could it be compared with 2010 Bocock?
I still like the Reading infield of Overbeck-Galvis-Garcia-Savery for 2011 to start. But that would give us Rivero or the Martinez scenario opening day with Orr at the other middle spot. I might try to find my way down to Reading around their opening weekend (4/14…) for that infield, though.
Golly, is it possible that they keep Martinez in Philly under the “Herndon” Rule 5 policy just to avoid giving him back to Washington right away? That gives us Barfield; I’d be thrilled with that. Larish, Orr, Barfield, Rizz with Rivero in the Velandia spot (coaching first). That gets my season off to a good start!
Hip hip! JORGE! I miss Velandia… I like the sound of that infield too
Okay, here’s a twist. I know none of this is written in stone but major league transactions today list some of the players in the original post in a little more detail:
Philadelphia Phillies option Drew Naylor to LV Ironpigs.
Phillies option Cesar Hernandez to Clearwater Threshers.
Phillies option Harold Garcia to Reading Phillies.
Phillies option Justin De Fratus to Reading Phillies.
Phillies option Carlos Rivero to Reading Phillies.
Phillies option J.C. Ramirez to Reading Phillies.
Phillies option Matt Rizzotti to Reading Phillies.
OK, so the rotation’s starting to take shape:
1. Naylor as above ( I figured, but didn’t think it was written in stone before now.)
2. Worley, you’ve got to figure, barring any drama in Philadelphia.
3. Bump, as last year.
4/5. Feirabend, Bass, Bonine are the “new” guys looking for the last two spots.
Carpenter and Kendrick are the wild cards. All are assuming that KK is the long guy out of the pen in Philadelphia, but if he keeps getting shelled, perhaps they consider one of the young guns: Stutes or Matheison. Stutes sure has been looking good of late. Gotta assume Anderson stays in the pen, too, if anywhere, don’t we?
whoa, I got so distracted by Naylor, I didn’t notice the other Reading stuff. I know they could still change it, but,
Barfield, Bocock, Orr, Larish in the infield? Figured DeFratus might have to start in Reading; he wan’t pitching quite as well as expected. I do think we see him sooner rather than later, though. Rizz? Hmm. We’ll see. Maybe he comes up when Savery is ready to take 1B in Reading? Bozied gets a spot on LHV? So many questions, as you said…
Wait – I thought Rizzotti was the IronPigs first baseman of the future?
🙂
