First AAA Ironpig Spring Training Game Results

As reported by the Ironpig’s media office:

The Phillies’ Triple-A spring training squad (1-0) won its opener over the Triple-A Blue Jays, 6-5, at Carpenter Complex on Monday.

The bats provided the headlines, as the team belted out a 13-hit, six-run performance.

1B Tagg Bozied paced the attack, going 2-4 with a HR and 2 RBI. CF Rich Thompson (1-3) also contributed 2 RBI and a team-high 2 stolen bases. Former Colorado farmhand OFs Matt Miller (2-5) and Chris Frey (2-2, 2B) also collected multi-hit games.

RHP Drew Naylor (3 ip, 4 h, 2 r, 2 er, 2 bb, 3 k) got the start, but it was former IronPigs RHP Nate Bump and RHP Michael Schwimer that provided the pitching highlights. Bump — who entered in the fourth inning — went two scoreless frames, allowing just one hit and one walk. Schwimer dazzled with two perfect innings, fanning four of the six batters he faced to earn the save.

Bozied, 31, is likely to make the IronPigs Opening Day roster after being added to the Phillies’ 40-Man Roster this winter. The Sioux Falls, SD, spent last season at Double-A Reading – where he led Eastern League in AVG (.315) while setting a career best in HR (27) and tying a career high in RBI (92). Among his 2010 accolades, Bozied was selected as a midseason EL All-Star and a participant in HR Derby as well as being named Double-A Hitter of Year by MiLB.com. Signed by Philadelphia as a minor league free agent 1/16/10, Bozied was once a top prospect for the San Diego Padres – who drafted him in the 3rd round of 2001 and promoted him up to Triple-A in just his second affiliated pro season in 2003. But a freak injury derailed his progress in 2004. Bozied was hitting .315-16-58 in 56 G before a season-ending knee injury on 7/19 — which occurred in a team celebration when crossing home plate after hitting a walk-off grand slam. The career .283 hitter is still looking for his first taste of the Major Leagues with what would be his sixth Triple-A franchise, should he stick with Lehigh Valley.

With a camp day tomorrow, the Triple-A Phils will next play Wednesday at the Triple-A Pirates at the Pirate City Complex in Bradenton, Fla. First-pitch is scheduled for 1 PM.

Nice work. Appreciate the box score.

  2. Good to finally get some details but I’m not sure the 2nd part of this statement is true: “Bozied, 31, is likely to make the IronPigs Opening Day roster after being added to the Phillies’ 40-Man Roster this winter.”
I don’t recall Bozied ever being on the Phillies 40-man roster. Back in November he was one of 12 “non-roster players” who were invited to spring training. The others were Barfield, Bonine, Feierabend, Kratz, Larish, Meyer, Miller, Moss, Orr, Perez and Sardinha.

  3. On the Phillies transaction listing for November 19th, 2010, they list Bozied as being “assigned” to the Phillies. I don’t show any record of him being designated or outrighted back down. He is not currently listed as part of the Phillies 40 man roster.

This is what spring training, minor league style, is all about…you guys are doing great and invaluable work over here. Go free red balloons!

woo hoo! undefeated season so far!

    sometimes they’re blue…

    • I say “still in the running for a 300!” when I bowl a strike in the first frame too… 🙂

I know. My son Matt always updates me on the status of the no-hitter after the first inning. Or, in Vogelsong’s case, half-way through the first inning. As in, “Well, there goes the no-hitter.” 😉

  6. I don’t know if anyone checked the BlueClaws blog listed under the blogroll on this site but their minor league spring training game coverage is great. I hope it’s like this for every game.
Here is their coverage from Monday:
    Lakewood (Win 7-1):
First round pick Jesse Biddle threw two shutout innings with four strikeouts. He was followed by Percy Garner, who gave up one unearned run in two inings. Two shutout for Juan Sosa and three relievers.
Offensively, 2009 2nd round pick Kelly Dugan went 2-3 and drove in a pair while Matt McConnell had a pair of RBIs as well.
Domingo Santana, batting 4th and playing RF, went 2-4.
Aaron Altherr, a top ten organizational prospect per Baseball America, led off and played centerfield, while U of Delaware product Carlos Alonso played 3rd and hit 3rd, picking up a double.
Zach Collier, who missed last year with an injury and was with Lakewood in 2009, went 1-3 with a pair of walks.

    Clearwater (Win 6-2)
2010 BlueClaw Nick Hernandez threw two shutout and Jonathan Pettibone gave up an unearned run. Colby Shreve gave up a run in two innings while Mario Hollands and Jacob Borup each threw two perfect innings with three strikeouts.
Cesar Hernandez, with WPT last year and added to the 40-man roster in the off-season, played 2nd base and led off. Two hits for Jim Murphy and D’Arby Myers, while Jeremy Barnes went 2-3 with a home run.
Cameron Rupp, a 3rd rounder last year, caught and hit 5th while Jonathan Singleton DHd, going 0-4.

    Reading (Win 12-3)
Two perfect innings for starter Josh Zeid, while Trevor May threw two shutout innings here as well.
Darin Ruf, with Lakewood last year, went 2-3 with a home run and a walk. 2006 BlueClaws SS Fidel Hernandez had two hits as did Tyson Gillies and 2009 BlueClaw Steve Susdorf.
Former first round pick (and pitcher) Joe Savery was 3-3 with 3 RBIs as the DH while Travis Mattair, making a return to baseball, was 0-2 and played short.

    Lehigh Valley (Win 6-5)
Drew Naylor started and gave up two runs in three innings, the only pitcher to throw three today in a minor league game. Remember though, he is ahead of most since he started in big league camp.
2008 BlueClaw Mike Cisco gave up three unearned runs in two innings while Michael Schwimer threw two perfect innings with four strikeouts.
Tagg Bozied went 2-4 with a home run and 2009 BlueClaw Harold Garcia played 2B here, going 1-4 with a triple.
Sebastian Valle caught in this game, going 1-2 with a double (there are a lot of catchers still in big league camp so remember the catchers will still slide down–still a nice sign that they have him so high up on the food chain).
