Who is that? John Mayberry Jr?

With one single in the bottom of the 9th in Philadelphia, our own former Ironpig John Mayberry Jr. had a walk off base hit to win the game.

I missed it.

I was at a dentist appointment when the game started. (No cavities)

I was shopping for groceries throughout the rest of the game (Our charity cook book photo shoot is tomorrow)

So good ole John Mayberry Jr. came through. I got home in time for the post game show. Looked like they pulled in the outfielders, with one out and the bases loaded hoping to cut off any runners but the ball went off Mayberry’s bat and just cleared the centerfielder’s glove to end the game. Good stuff here.

A couple questions:
Why is JC Romero still around?

Why is Herndon still on the big team? He’s cleared the rule 5 obligations. Maybe he’s a good road trip companion. Who knows.

Look for the Ironpig bullpen to be fed on in the upcoming weeks.

OinK!

  1. Per Todd Zolecki, the Phillies signed 36 year old infielder Ronnie Belliard on Thursday. He was signed as a free agent by the Yankees on February 8th and was released on March 28th. He will report directly to the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs. Belliard spent the last 2 years with the Dodgers.

    LHV rosters posted on Phuturephillies.com

    • If you take a good look at those Phuture Phillies rosters you’ll see Matt Rizzotti is at Reading. That leaves just Jeff Larish and Tagg Bozied to share first and third with Barfield, Belliard, Frandsen and Hudson as the other infielders. I guess you could throw Delwyn Young into that mix as well although he’s better suited as a corner outfielder.

Belliard might be more of a 1B at this juncture. I’m not sure how well he can move anymore. Or: hit.

I would have taken Luis Castillo for the Pigs had that been a possibility.

I’m happy for Mayberry. For now, he seems to be applying himself well: reports of getting himself ready for that PH 7 batters in advance. He also seems more patient at the plate this spring. JMHO.

      • Didn’t I take a lot of crap a few weeks ago when I suggested Rizzotti starting in Reading? πŸ™‚

Per Todd Zolecki’s Twitter page: The Phillies released Matt Anderson from Minor League Camp.

      Thanks Dean,
Seemed like Anderson had some velocity back (95mph by reports) but never found enough control to be effective in relief. That, plus the logjam of good “young” arms at AAA/AA: Schwim, Math, Stute, DeFratus, Aumont, Z, and not to mention Carp now in the pen.

  4. Per a tweet from Phuture Phillies, Drew Naylor, Tagg Bozied, and Juan Perez have all been placed on the DL. I didn’t do the math but with the release of Matt Anderson, that should bring the LV roster down to about 24.

  5. I’m now counting 24, unless another transaction happens in the next day or two:
12 Pitchers: Bass, Bonine, Bump, Worley, Feierabend, Carpenter, Grilli, Mathieson, Meyer, Schwimer, Stutes, Zagursky.
    2 Catchers: Sardinha, Kratz
5 Infielders: Larish, Belliard, Barfield, Frandsen, Hudson
5 Outfielders: Miller, Moss, Sullivan, Thompson, D. Young

Patience…swinging at pitches out of the strike zone and taking walks. Always what Mayberry has needed to work on. Good for him is right – go IronPigs.

With Tagg on the DL, you might see Rizzotti come back to LHV.

Well, not straight away. They probably want to see how the 1B order of Larish AAA, Rizzotti AA, Savery A plays out. And, how young prospect Jonathan Singleton does in LF for Clearwater.

Then, you’ve got to consider how Belliard’s Corpse does at 2B. If he can’t play D there, will he be gone? Will he play p/t at 1B? Would I rather have Sandberg activate himself to play 2B part time? I digress…

Finally, consider Bozied’s injury. How bad is it? Does it have anything to do with Roast Beef sandwiches? Perhaps it’s only a mildly sprained Velandia, and he’ll be back any day ( I mean, after 7 of them ).

I wouldn’t count on seeing Rizzotti in LHV until the all-star break–barring extenuating circumstances, other than Tuesday for the visitors.

It’s pretty clear the Phils brass are pretty pissed at Riz coming into camp out of shape. Really makes you wonder where the guys head is.
