Game Results from Columbus – 5/5/11

The Columbus Clippers came into this game on a 13 game winning streak and had lost only 2 games at home.

The Pigs got on the board early with 3 runs in the first. Also in the 1st Rich Thompson came down with his 400th career Stolen Base!!

The Clippers took back 2 runs in the 3rd and tacked on one more in the 5th when Brandon Moss lost a ball in the lights. No worries though as Brandon Moss Hog cleared the bases with a grand slam in the top of that inning!

Great job by Michael Schwimer in the 8th! After back to back walks issued by Juan Perez, Schwimer came on and allowed an off the wall single, resulting in the bases loaded with no outs situation. It is surprising that Columbus couldn’t get the runner to score from second on such a long fly ball but chalk it up to a conservative baserunning situation. Schwimer then struck out three straight batters to get out of the inning!

In the top of the ninth, Moss Hog came on to hit another HR, 3 runs this time and took the franchise record of 7 RBI in one game home with him!

Chance Chapman, in perhaps his last appearence with the Ironpigs for now, closed out the game and the Pigs win 10 to 3 over the Columbus Clippers tonight, ending the Clippers 13 game winning streak. Let’s hope they can continue with this momentum and carry it throughout the home stand. The Ironpigs improve to 7 and 3 on the road and actually have a losing record at home at 8 and 9.

Key hitters:
Brandon Moss – 2 for 4 with 7 RBI
Domonic Brown – 3 for 4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.
Brian Bocock – 2 for 3 with 2 walks
Rich Thompson – 1 for 3 with 3 walks and 1 run scored

The bullpen did a great job tonight allowing 3 runs on 4 hits between Gordon, Carpenter, Perez, Schwimer and Chapman.

Many thanks to all who participated in the “Virtual Road Trip Live Chat”! The next Road trip will be Monday, May 9th.

OinK!

Great start to a long road trip.
I was surprised to see that one of our favorite bloggers and Phillies prospect Eric Pettis was promoted from the Lakewood Blue Claws to the Clearwater Threshers this week. He got in his first game for the Threshers tonight and threw 2 innings, allowed no runs on 2 hits while striking out 3, all in the 7th inning.

  3. Spec-freakin’-tacular. I picked a good year to blow off the Cubs: IronPigs are tied for second in their division; down in the Texas League, the Drillers are in first; and both parent clubs are leading their respective divisions. πŸ™‚

You know, if things were going differently, I’d be really upset that the Phils didn’t get us a starter for Worley for two cylces of the rotation. However, it’s working out fine, and Gordon’s been really good in that “short starter” role. Also, good for Carp. No more spot starts for him. His mindset is just better when he comes in from the pen, it seems. More agressive and doesn’t make mistakes out over the plate as much. Wondering where our next starter’s coming from, though: Worley back? Naylor? Ramirez? Hyatt?

How would you define a successful road trip to Ohio? 4-4? 5-3? 3-5? Better?

Having baseball withdrawl today. No ‘pigs; no Reading. Wife’s out of town. Almost pulled trigger on gray-market Phils tix but kids didn’t want to go.

To ease my pain, bought a new hat at the Coke MCS. And a sweatshirt.

“Gray market”…Big league phraseology, that stuff there.
