IronPig Game Results 7/23/11 – Pigs Hang On

The Pigs pitching kept the game close and the Clipper’s infielders committed two errors in the bottom of the 10th inning allowing the Pigs to win by a final score of 4 to 3.

Scott Mathieson made it to the 5th but was pulled immediately after surrendering a solo HR to Chad Huffman. Joe Savery then took the mound for an inning allowing 2 more runs. In his first IronPig appearance Heilman also earned his first blown save. (Per the boxscore) Zagurski pitched another 1.1 innings and Schwimer pitched 2.1 innings earning the win and improving his record to 6 wins, 1 loss.

Combined, the Pig Pitchers struck out 17 tonight.

Rich Thompson got the Pigs on the board early sending the 2nd pitch of the game out of CCP for a HR.

This was a key win for the Pigs as Pawtucket also won tonight. Maintaining a lead over Pawtucket is key before facing them in 3 days. The next 7 games will most likely decide if the Pigs make the playoffs this season.

They are fighting and hopefully Ryne Sandberg will return from Cooperstown to a 1st place team.

OinK!

Reports from Philly media indicate Roy Oswalt may be ready for a rehab start by Wednesday. Hopefully if that happens it will happen with the Ironpigs.

While the Ironpigs are in the tough part of their schedule I wouldn’t go as far as saying the next 7 games will determine if the Ironpigs make the playoffs Beating the teams they’re supposed to beat in August will also go a long way in determining who wins the North Division. After this homestand the Ironpigs still have 16 games against non-division opponents. They’ll face Durham (57-43), Norfolk (36-64), Indianapolis (52-50) and Toledo (46-56). Those teams have won a total of 191 games and two of those 4 teams(Tides & Mud Hens) are in last place and out of playoff contention. Meanwhile, Pawtucket must play Gwinnett (56-44), Charlotte (50-52), Columbus (64-37) and Louisville (53-49). Those 4 teams have won a total of 223 games and all of them still have a chance to make the playoffs as a division champ or the wild card. Pawtucket has an out of division schedule in August that is much more difficult than the non-division schedule of the Ironpigs. If the Ironpigs can come out of July in reasonably good shape they should have a schedule advantage in August.

  2. Hope Moss’ knee is OK or we might have to borrow an OF from Reading. They’ve got a few and Bozied is out of town attending to personal business, so we could use a body.

    More thoughts later…

We have all loved the way Rich Thompson has played over the years. In my opinion, this is his best year ever. I would love to see him added to the Phils 40 man roster and be a September call up.
