IronPig Game Results 8/15/11 – Dislike

The Pigs lost two tonight to visiting Toledo. They added a little excitement in both games but in the end it leaves the series at a split.

Pawtucket won and increase their lead in the IL North.

Durham won their first game and, as of this post, have a big lead late in their game 2.

Gwinnett lost.

The division looks to be slipping away and the wild card race will be close.

The key to getting into the playoffs? Winning games.

Moss must be in the lineup everyday. Can we stop the Cust experiment already and go back to Delwyn Young? Geez!!!
And Barfield really needs to play everyday as well. Just my opinion.

I agree with KGB, why did we sign Cust in the 1st place??? He hasn’t shown me anything!

I just say Provence post on his twitter account: newcomer Dave Bush will start Tuesday’s game, not Feierabend. I wonder who was bumped out of the rotation – Mathieson ?

  6. Dear Mr. Sandberg: I love you dearly, but if I’d wanted my heart broken again, I could have stayed in the Friendly Confines. Just sayin’.

  7. (Which is not to say that I am giving up. Cub fans don’t give up until their boys are mathematically eliminated.)

  8. I can’t believe we’re already throwing Jack Cust under the bus after less than 10 at bats. The Ironpigs team batting average already ranks 14th in a 14 team league so nobody else seems to be tearing the cover off the ball. Why is Cust to blame for this team’s lack of offense when he’s only been here 3 days? The guys to blame for this teams failure to produce are the guys responsible for that team batting average ranked last in the International League. Jack Cust came here after not having played in 16 days. Give the guy a break. You can’t blame someone with only 9 at bats in 3 games for not doing what others haven’t done all year.

    • Oh, you’re right, Decal. My kids were on Cust last night which kind of prompted my “Cust-ers’ Last Stand” tweet.

There are just so many ABs to go around, and few who can claim absolute right to them. Sandberg’s done a really good job balancing need to play against need a break. I agree about Moss, though. Here’s my take:

      1. Thompson CF
No other true CF on the roster defensively, and he makes things happen. No way you can tell me that a lineup without Thompson is better. Not now, and never at any point this season.

      2. Orr/Frandsen 3B
I suppose they’re playing Orr at 3B a ton lately in case Polanco needs DL time. Frandsen has not been the same since he came back. Flashes of it, but, what, .216? He doesn’t get a permanent spot at this juncture.

      3. Brown LF

      4. Moss RF
He’s really been the most consistent and shows power. He’s earned this spot but I’d be OK with Young if Moss needs a break.

      5. Cust/Young DH
Both are LH hitters really (c’mon, I don’t like dweezy from the right), so I’m not sure how this splits, but it’s what I would do.

      6. Barfield 2B
I think he’s earned this spot, too. Frandsen if he needs to sit.

      7. Kratz C
I’ve seen enough Sardinha. I like his walk-up music, though. BTW, I bid on Kratz’ jersey last night–the first time I’ve ever done such a thing. I thought I put a pretty big number on it, but I didn’t win. The guy who got it also won like three others. That’s an expensive night at the park!

      8. Overbeck/Frandsen 1B
Overbeck’s doing better, and gets the majority of the time here due to his continued status as a fringe prospect.

      9. Glavis SS
Good to see him higher last night, but it’s like having two leadoff guys. He’s the only true SS on the team.

Gotta hand it to Bozied, if he’s really injured or not–hasn’t gotten a chance to really get into it this year. Would have liked to have seen him more this season.

    • Decal my comment isn’t directed at you, just the topic you are bringing up.

Fairly or unfairly, Jack Cust has become the symbol of what is wrong with the current IronPigs team. The Phillies did not need to sign Jack Cust. Or Dave Bush. You and I have as much of a chance of being called up in September as they do. Yet these guys are called “upgrades” and “veteran help” by the Phillies beat writers.

The Phillies had plenty of extra bats and extra arms here already. For whatever reason they have seemingly overlooked a few deserving players on this roster all season.

Through all the transactions, the IronPigs have endured and placed themselves in a good position for their first ever playoff spot. Now the roster is being transformed to something like 2008 and the chemistry is slowly evaporating. Putting 9 game winner Feierabend on the DL for Bush was the final straw for me.

Like KGB said, the minors is for development and an extra bench. But when you have guys here who can help just as much, if not more, these signings are unnecessary.

KRAM: Agree 100% with your lineup. Frandsen and Orr platoon.
DECAL: No one is blaming Cust. All I am saying is this team has been very successful with the above guys. Yes, Glavis just came up, Brown has been here, gone, here again. I know, the Minors are development for Phils, they are hoping Cust can be a left handed bat for them, blah blah blah….They have a real shot at the playoffs, they owe it to their paying, loyal fans to try everything they can to make the playoffs after what they put on the field the first 3 years…
