IronPig Game Results 8/17/11 – On the Road Again

The Pigs all played strong today and defeated the Rochester Red Wings by a final score of 3-1.

The Pigs head out to play 2 in Rochester, then 4 in Indianapolis and 4 in Louisville. Go get em Pigs!

In other news, before the game it was announced that Erik Kratz and Michael “Phear the Phro” Schwimer had been named IronPig player and pitcher of the year. Congrats to both and well deserved!

Just something else I thought about today. We haven’t seen Tagg Bozied playing much these days. Back in April when Matt Rizzotti was sent to Reading I heard a lot of complaints. Looking at it late in the season it looks like it was the better of the deal. Bozied has played in 53 games this season at LV compared to Matt Rizzotti playing in 119 games in Reading. Balance the scale, be in AAA and not play much or in AA for a lot of games. I’d rather play every day.

OinK!

Yeah, I don’t get the whole Bozied thing. I think he has more pop in his bat than Overbeck. I know he has played first. Someone has to explain this one to me. Is it possible Bozied really is hurt?

    • Perhaps it’s because the Phillies consider the 25 year old Overbeck to still be a prospect while the prospect tag no longer fits the 32 year old Bozied. I would think if Bozied is healthy he would be active and playing against all the LH starters the Ironpigs have been seeing. Bozied crushed lefties at Reading last year and has 5 homers in 48 at bats this year vs. southpaws.

Brandon Moss is really in the zone right now.

For those who care about these things, the diamond was found on the infield around the area where Josh Barfield plays.

      • The 21 homeruns by Brandon Moss is just one shy of his career best. Moss hit 22 homeruns in 500 at bats for Indianapolis in 2010 and has 21 homeruns in just 376 at bats this year. The Ironpigs record for homeruns in a season is 26 by Andy Tracy in 2009.

it’s not that hard to figure out. overbeck is playing every day because he’s 23. Bozied is on the DL because he’s a veteran player who isn’t going anywhere. bozied is “injured” the same way that Heilman had and Feierabend has ‘turf toe” injuries.

too many players on a 24-man roster

if there’s a legit injury or there’s a few call-ups on sept. 1, bozied will heal quickly. otherwise, he’s pretty much done

Tagg is on the DL. My boys really like Tagg and they are sad he’s not playing. I think it’s a little ironic that he struck out with 2 outs in the top of the 7th in Scranton (they played the 2, 7 inning games) and he went on the DL the next day. I would love to see him play more often and I do agree…I think we will see Rizzotti up here for the playoffs.

  4. The Twins called up Luke Hughes from Rochester today. He’s the guy who hit a first pitch homerun off Drew Carpenter on Tuesday night after Dave Bush came out of the game. Hughes will be replaced on the Red Wings roster by Mike Hollimon who was hitting .229 with 14 HR at AA New Britain.

LOL! Overbeck is 25 and 23 years old? Again, as stated many times, if team was .500 or less, don’t care who plays. But since they are in playoff contention, they owe it to the paying, loyal fans to play the best, regardless of age or prospectus(and we all know a very high % of prospects end as prospects, nothing more).

    • Overbeck was born June 5, 1986.
The major league team pays the contracts of minor league uniformed personnel (players/coaches) while the minor league team controls the operational expenses and determines such important things as how much to charge for a hot dog. While I agree in principle with what you say about who I’d prefer to see play, the Phillies don’t really owe us anything. If they did, Andy Tracy would still be here. I’m just hoping there’s Ironpigs baseball this year after September 5 regardless of who is in the starting lineup.

I realize who pays the salaries. Well, technically the fans pay the salaries. The Phillies don’t us anything and we owe them nothing. That is what gives us the right to be critical and boo if we want to….But I am with you, hope there are games after September 5th…
