SWB – New Update

Speculation continues on the fate of the 2012 SWB Yankees’ season. Latest reports reveal SWB may remain in Moosic at PNC Field in 2012. Renovations would either be postponed until 2013 or construction would occur during the season (sounds awful for attendance). Yet another option is to schedule the construction over a 2 year period (and remain in Moosic) thus adding $1.4 million to the construction budget.

The NY Mets have recently blocked SWB from playing at Newark’s Riverfront Stadium due to territorial issues. Oddly enough the newest report has the Yankees AAA team splitting time between Buffalo, Syracuse, and Rochester. So, the Mets block the Yankees from Newark and now they are going to end up at their own AAA team in Buffalo? (The Buffalo Bisons are the IL AAA team of the NY Mets).

For the record, Coca-Cola Park was not mentioned in any recent reports. At the same time it doesn’t appear it’s been ruled out either.

The three way split doesn’t seem very palatable at all for IronPigs fans who hoped to start their season on April 5th with two away games at SWB or perhaps a home “away” opener at Coca-Cola Park.

Buffalo:        327 mi, 5 hours 48 mins
Rochester:  272 mi, 4 hours 56 mins
Syracuse:    205 mi, 3 hours 35 mins

All are quite a bit farther than Moosic but not quite as far as the “middle of the woods in Rhode Island”!

Who’s up for a chilly NY road trip in April?

OinK On!

ME! And if it’s in Buffalo we need to stop and see the falls. We can take a ride on the Maid of the Mist…however make sure you bring a water proof camera. Right Jimmy T? LOL!

Regardless of what happens with SWB, I am really looking forward to the road trips in 2012 lol!!

  2. Someone responding to a MiLB.com article about the SWB issue suggested Atlantic City, where an independent-ball team played until 2009, except that like Newark it falls (barely) within that 150-mile radius that would require a move to be approved by the Mets.

    • I misread that rule; it’s only 15 miles, otherwise that rule would have precluded, f’rinstance, CCP from being on SWB’s short list. AC would be a theoretical idea, except it takes 7-8 hours to get there from Rochester or Syracuse, and probably 10 from Buffalo.

As gogobblers already mentioned, Bernie Robbins stadium has been a haven for drug dealers and the homeless since the Surf ceased to exist in ’09.

Most of the copper wiring, any metal not tired down, and even fiber optic phone lines have been dug up, dug out, and torn up.

The current mayor has made some talk about fully renovating the stadium in the hopes of either attracting a minor league team or another independant team but the city’s finances are in a shambles and Christie has already said no to any kind of state loan/grant so that place will sit.

The city floated some bonds to the tune of 300K in anticipation of the Dave Matthews shows that took place at Bader Field which used Bernie Robbins as a VIP area but the fixes were mostly cosmetic and I’ve read estimates that to make the field playable could take another 750K-1M dollars.

Ironpigs posted today on Facebook that all eight 2012 Ironpig games scheduled to be played in Scranton will be played at Coca Cola Park. Nothing was said on the post about any other SWB games.
