Full story hereSponichi is reporting that the Yomiuri Giants have an interest in 27-year-old RHP Scott Mathieson.
With Yuya Kubo likely to miss the start of the season next year (right hip joint surgery), the Giants are looking for someone that can step in and provide some stability in the bullpen and become the team closer.
Mathieson has been with the Phillies his entire career after being drafted by them in 2002 and the Phillies would have to release him to go to Japan.
We’ve seen the Phillies release/trade good players to allow them for greater opportunities many times before. Would love for him to stay here with us IronPig fans but I personally think it is a great opportunity for him and his family.
What do you think… Does Scott go to Japan?

Mathison is out of options so if they remove him from the 40 man roster, he is free to go to Japan. Steve Degler said on our last potbelly that he feels Scott is a good fit for Japan and should definitely do it if given the opportunity
Phiilies will want something in return or they can hold him until last day of spring training. Mathieson could easily make 1.5-2.0 million going to Japan as opposed to 500k with the Phillies. Probably see him back closing against the Phillies after one season. Phillies have not given him a fair chance and it will come back to haunt them. Like to see him in the bullpen this year.
Phillies will have to sell his rights….and they will…Mathieson signs with Tokyo Giants…great fit there.
I’m a fan of his and I’d welcome him back to the ‘Pigs without reservation. However, he may need a change of scenery, and his fastball would probably play well in Japan–if that’s the case, I’d wish him well.
