Bats Come Alive as Triple-A Phils Win Again

Three Triple-A Phillies recorded multi-hit games and the pitching staff was strong once again as the squad won its third straight, defeating the Pirates 6-1 Tuesday afternoon in Bradenton.

Leading the seven-hit attack was INF Cody Overbeck, who went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and OF Josh Fields who also chipped in with two hits and two RBIs. INF Troy Hanzawa went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored, while C Tommy Joseph launched a home run.

On the mound, the 2012 International League Most Valuable Pitcher Tyler Cloyd tossed three innings, allowing one run on four hits. Brian Bass worked an efficient three innings, walking one and surrendering one hit, while Hector Neris worked the seventh and eighth. Justin Friend closed the game for the Triple-A Phillies, notching a strikeout in the ninth. The run surrendered by Cloyd was the only one the staff has surrendered over the past three games, as the squad has outscored its opponents 12-1 in that span.

Overbeck, who also scored a run, is a Lehigh Valley veteran after spending all of 2012 with the team and part of 2011. In the 2012 campaign, the corner infielder led the team with 14 home runs and set a franchise single-season record with 133 games played. Originally selected by the Phillies in the ninth round of the 2008 draft, the University of Mississippi product has cracked 20 home runs and driven in 97 in his Triple-A career.

The Phillies return to Clearwater today where they play host to the Yankees at the Carpenter Complex, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.

  1. B.J. Rosenberg pitched the same day with the AA group which lost to the Pirates 6-2. He threw 3 innings, allowed 4 runs (3 earned), and struck out 3. Surprisingly, 19 year old Roman Quinn continues to play very well in the AA group and went 2-2 with a walk and a SB. The #5 prospect in the Phillies organization according to mlb.com played at short season Williamsport last year. It still has to be a longshot for him to jump over Lakewood and Clearwater and move all the way up to Reading. My guess is he starts the year with the Threshers.

WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE TELL THE WEATHER IT’S SPRING!

  2. Good stuff, Decal, thanks. I get the feeling something’s not right with Rosenberg–I’ve no inside information, just wouldn’t be surprised to see him start the season on the DL. I’ve been forgetting about Tolbert; I supose he’s going to get a utility INF spot–I hope not at the expense of Fields. As much as I want Asche, we just might not need him yet at AAA. In other news, I believe Valle’s been working with the AA group, and Jiwan James had surgery on his knee today (sounded like a scope).

  3. one more thing: SECTV2 special tonight on IronPigs roster n stuff I think 7:30PM. I’m not sure I can get it, but for those who can….Matt, Jon, and Heater are on…
