@Ironpigs Secret to Defeating the @NorfolkTides ?

Looking over the stats of last week’s IronPig series with the Norfolk Tide I saw an interesting trend.

May 14th: 7-12 Loss

Cochran – 4 innings, 5 hits 5 runs allowed. Throws Left
Friend – 2 innings, 0 hits 0 runs allowed. Throws Right
Stutes – 1 inning, 0 hits 0 runs allowed. Throws Right
Savery – .2 inning, 2 hits 4 runs allowed. Throws Left
Diekman – .1 inning, 3 hits 3 runs allowed. Throws Left

May 15th: 1-10 Loss

Morgan – 3.1 innings, 10 hits 10 runs allowed. Throws Left
Jimenez – 3.1 innings, 4 hits 0 runs allowed. Throws Left
Ramirez – 1.1 innings, 0 hits 0 runs allowed. Throws Right

May 16th: 6-8 Loss

Cloyd – 3.1 innings, 11 hits 7 runs allowed. Throws Right
Friend – 1.2 innings, 0 hits 0 runs allowed. Throws Right
Ramirez – 2 innings, 1 hit 0 runs allowed. Throws Right
Stutes – 1 inning, 3 hits 1 run allowed. Throws Right

May 17th: 8-7 Win

Martin – 7 innings, 8 hits 2 runs allowed. Throws Right
Savery – .1 innings, 4 hits 5 runs allowed. Throws Left
Stutes – 1.2 innings, 0 hits 0 runs allowed. Throws Right

It seems that Norfolk can hit lefties well. In fact Joe Savery got pulled offshore twice by the Tide. Leaving out Cloyd’s start, the Lefties allowed 23 runs to the Righties 3 runs allowed. (Cloyd makes it 10 for the right handers)

On the North side of the mound, Friend and Stutes looked pretty good.

This should be an interesting series starting tonight and continuing throughout the weekend. The Pigs are coming off a 3-1 series win over Rochester and enjoyed a day off yesterday.

They took advantage of the off day to help out IronPig’s Charities. I have seen some photos out there of their participation in the 6th annual Hackers & Homes golf tournament to benefit IronPig’s Charities. I had attended this event for 3 of those years and only saw one other member of the team participate. (Greg Gross in 2009) Hats off to this year’s crew who came out to help out at this quality event!

Norfolk is coming off a split series with Durham. All four games were decided by one run with a day off on Monday. Expect them to not give the Pigs any room for error.

It’ll be fun for sure.

OinK!

Danny Valencia (.306-11-35) hit 4 home runs in the 4 games the Ironpigs played in Norfolk. It might also help that he has been promoted to the Baltimore Orioles since then. His 4 homers came off Cochran (LH), Savery (LH), Morgan (LH) and Cloyd (RH).
And, with the Ironpigs headed to Rochester for 4 games next week, it was nice to see Rochester first baseman/DH Chris Colabello get promoted to the Minnesota Twins. Colabello was 7-16 with 7 RBIs vs. the Ironpigs this week with 4 of those RBIs coming on a grand slam off Justin Friend. Overall, he was hitting .358-12-39, so it looks like the Ironpigs will miss 2 of the best power hitters in the IL in the next 8 days.

    • good stuff, Decal! I was going to do this post, but never got around to it. Certainly, as thinly as the ‘Pigs ‘pen is spread, it’s not possible to avoid using left-handed pitchers. But, they might want to be careful, and maybe approach the Tides hitters slightly differently from how they would normally (I don’t know what this means, but I know whatever they were doing in Norfolk, wasn’t working).

Aumont joins us (unable to find out as of this writing if he’s in town or travelling, or pulling a “Luna”) in Stutes’ stead. That’s a wash, righty for righty. Some hand-wringing from Phillies followers with the Aumont “demotion” but my impression is that he’s being sent down to get some work in and to get innings which he hasn’t had many of in Philly. They still view him as a work in-progress and are less concerned with Horst and Rosenberg just got there. Plus, Stutes really deserves to go up, so… nice move. Love to see Aumont come in with a chip on his shoulder and just dominate. We’ll see.
